There's been questions similar to this before, but it mostly concerned when and how. I'm curious as to why.

And yes I realize the Civil War and Glorious Revolution weren't strolls in the park and casual events. But certainly the Great Britain as a political entity/state as we know it had much more continuity in this transferring of power than did any other monarchies I can think of.

Most artifactporn pictures I've seen with shoes, they appear to be made from leather but in the degraded quality I can't tell if they had any sort of markings on the bottom to give them a better grip on the ground.

I've worn leather sandles that were flat on the bottom and slide around everywhere (especially on grass) which leaves me wondering how they didn't slide around!

Especially during the final months when it became clear to the Nazis that the war was over. Wouldn't they have nothing to lose at that point?

• was there any campaigns to ban American goods?

• did America actually export that much like China does today? (Obviously on a far less scale)

• were any companies transferring manufacturing to America?

How do you define a world war, and based on that, how many world wars have there actually been?

Hey guys, recently my family has been attempting to find the service record of my great grandfather who served in the First World War. He served for the Canadian forces and we still live in Canada today, in fact i go to school in Ottawa so I have relatively easy access to the National Archives (if necessary). I was hoping somebody here would have some useful tips or methods to go about this search

I am quite interested in German perspectives on WW2. Especially the major participants and how they looked back on it - What were their thoughts on why they lost? What was it like on D-Day, how they reacted when they Dresden burned - that kind of thing.

Did the German generals of the WM leave many memoirs and are any particularly insightful?

Any recommendations very gratefully received.

I would think that since they were paid for and needed to work farms and such that people wouldn't just constantly beat them like you see in movies and television.

Simple enough question. My own guess is it arrived after evolution was discovered. I only think this because evolution was the first explanation to the physical world that didn't require a god (or is that wrong?).

Maybe Atheism existed before? Is there any famous Atheists before Charles Darwin's time?

I'm thinking of cases like Jesse Williams, where a mob forcibly removed the victim from where he was being held inside the court.

From what I gather in the case of Williams the police looked on and didn't attempt to interfere, was this the norm? Did officers that didn't try to enforce rule of law ever face any possible repercussions? Are there any cases of police engaging in the use of force to protect a potential lynching victim from a mob?

Wiki tells me this idea was first used to describe social orders in the middle ages. Who were the key people writing about it and do more modern historians still draw on it?

What do Historians think about so called Fourth Estates such as independent media and trade unions? Are they still linked to the way Historians previously wrote about the Estates of the Realm, or are they an example of other subject areas adopting historical terminology?

Finally there’s the “Fifth Estate” (wiki leaks, blogs, twitter, even reddit) which is mainly an idea in sociology of media as far as I can tell. Are there links between this usage and what Historians have written on the other Estates?
