As the title says, the Camb 5 obviously had a huge impact inside the UK intelligence community, but were there any intelligence or diplomatic repercussions with the US, and do these continue to this day?

On the TV show MASH, the character Winchester complains that he was stationed in tokyo but got transferred to the MASH. He says it was much better in Tokyo and hates where he is now. Considering it was less than 10 years after WW2 and a lot of the city was destroyed by bombs, how nice could it really be?

I would like to know more about Damascus steel and have found two very different explanations for what it was. The first is that it was a form of pattern welding. The other is that it was a crucible steel. What actually was it?

I was thinking the other day about how hard is must be for a small population to grow exponentially without at first many instances of inbreeding. My question is were arranged marriages used as an apparatus for early human communities to avoid inbreeding? I have a rough understanding of the 19th Century militia system in the US, and it seems to me, that lacking a Victorian SWAT team, that in cases of riots the local militia or homeguard were called out to put down riots, given as police lacked the ability to do so. Is this correct? Did US police forces maintain an ability to properly take on riots, or was this left to the home guard and militia?

In my pirate research, which is still at early stages, I have found (thanks, in part, to some of you) that a lot of what pirates are known for comes from fiction. I was in Gloucester cathedral today looking at their relatively large (in comparison to other cathedrals) collection of regimental colours from units within the county. I'm very much aware of the significance of the colours to the men of a regiment (being a military man myself).

Accompanying the colours (which unfortunately were not in the best of conditions considering the status at which they were held by soldiers) was a poem written by Sir Edward Hamly:

"...Tis the deeds that were done 'neath the moth-eaten rag, When the pole was a staff, and the rag was a flag."

This got me thinking, are there many accounts of soldiers defending their colours to the death? I.e. The enemy being in and around the colour party.

I can think of only one of the top of my head, at the battle of Isandlwana, where the officer attempting to save the colours was awarded a VC.

Germany and Britain have similar population sizes as France but combined have fewer winners. Why does France have so many?

There were ethnic German communities all across the globe, so how were they treated and what happened to them during and after the second world war period? Were these communities treated suspiciously? Did they share any affiliation with Nazi ideology?

I'm interested if it was the actions of Prussia and it's leaders (Frederick The Great / Frederick William / Von Moltke) that saw Prussia rise to power, or if it was more luck/ good circumstances like the rapidly declining power of Austria. Or something else entirely. Thanks

Watched a documentary that basically said Napoleon attacked Spain, an ally at the time, completely unprovoked.

Is there any truth to this? The documentary focused much more on the fighting going on in Russia/Austria/Central Europe, so I figured they were just glossing over the Peninsular War.
