Earlier this week I saw a post in /r/ShowerThoughts that was something along the lines of: "A hundred years ago owning a horse was commonplace but owning a car was uncommon; today the opposite is true."
So since the invention of the car have horses begun to die as a species? And were horses used more in America after colonization or during medieval times?

I know that the Catholic Church in Ireland has had ties and has shown support for the IRA cause but how much did it actually contribute and support.

A lot of people consider the French Revolution to be one of the most important events in history, ushering in the modern age along with nationalism, secularism, human rights, etc. It is considered to have a global effect on politics, government and so on. Yet many ideas introduced in the French Revolution were already introduced by the American Revolution roughly a decade earlier. So why do the French get all the credit?

My uncle bought it in Vietnam a while back, said it was a colonist sword that people from India made for the marines there or something like that. It's kinda cheap looking and does have "made in india on it" but I'm not a huge historian so I don't know.

I've heard conflicting information about Carnegie's role in the corporate decisions regarding the Homestead Strike, and his feelings about the violence that ensued.
Did he support the tactics Frick employed?

So, threads like this one crop up from time to time, basically describing a victim (almost invariably female) being killed or injured for being sexually assaulted. These are described as honor killings, and appear to be occurring because of perceived shame brought upon the family of the victim as a result of the assault. So, when did this practice start? Where? Under what conditions? I know (or rather assume) that it's hard to look at the idea of crime, and perceptions thereof, throughout history (since something that's criminal today may have been acceptable in the past EDIT: and also clearly what's criminal in one place may not be in another, even within the same timeframe), but surely there's a context for what we see reported today.

As far I know, a large part of the world no longer dines celebratorily with massive excesses of food. Feasting seemed like it was pretty much the go to party to throw for much of recorded history, but has pretty much died out among modern western cultures, with the exception of a few large ceremonial dinners, nominally "feasts" (such as Thanksgiving in the US and Canada). When, and even why, did this shift occur?

What is the first citation of the well-known story? I have seen it adapted in both a Chinese and an ambiguously European setting. Is the eponymous emperor supposed to be the HRE's Kaiser? Chinese Emperor? Byzantine Baselius?

Hi there,
I was watching a show regarding the KTs and their early Banking operations, on how Pilgrims gave money to KT, and the KT would provide the Pilgrim with a cyphered card no different than today's debit cards.
My question is, how did the KT prevent the code from being cracked, and altered? Like someone suddenly changing 100Gold coins to 1000 Gold coins then do a fraudulent withdraw at a different Branch?

Hello, long time reader first time poster.
I have indulged myself in greek philosophy and abusing Greco-Roman movies, series and such but would like a good book or list of books to buff up on actual history. I don't pretend to be an academic, fyi im 20 and study International Relations so ancient history is a wonderful place for me to study. I am a non native English speaker so this is why i have trouble finding bibliography, any help is welcome!.
Am interested in the typical Greece-> Rise of rome, republic, empire, colapse sequence.

What were the plans the Iranian government had prior to the Iran-Iraq War? I once heard that Iran began to sell much of the military equipment that it had acquired from the United States, due to their belief that they were entering a new, peaceful age, only to have to buy it back in order to fight Iraq. Is this true? Were there any major reforms or national projects that were disrupted by the Iran-Iraq War?

In other words, are there any historical cases of what we now call AIDS showing up before AIDS was actually identified?

I know the basics, but I want to know more about both the governments (especially the Nazis) and the military. I thought about reading Chuchill's series, but I thought I would be outdated and it is unpractically long, as it would hold me stuck for months (and I got a very long "book line"). What do you guys suggest? Thanks!

I saw in a TIL that the British didn't assassinate Hitler because they felt he did more than good. In what ways did Hitler hurt the German war effort? I know he invaded Russia against his generals advice, as well as he delayed the invasion of Moscow. What else? And I know this is theoretical so it may not be allowed, but if Hitler had been assassinated (by his generals as they had tried to) or by others would their have been an acceptance of a non unconditional surrender? When his generals had the assassination attempt, were they planning on surrendering or continuing to fight?
Thanks
