Was Robin of Locksley ever a real nobleman? If so, how much of the legend is true? Did he fight in the Crusades and return home to total corruption? Is the character of Prince John accurately portrayed as such an immoral character? Was Robin of Locksley actually a vigilante called Robin Hood having a fling with Maid Marian?
And if it's totally just a legend, what are the origins? When/ where was it started and why is it still so popular today?
Also, any suggested reading on Robin Hood would be hugely appreciated!

Christians often say that the Crucifixion of Jesus is one of the most well-documented events in history to the point of being an unquestionable historical fact. Is it?

Hello,
So I know people used to be smaller and I know it depends on locale (I think south americans had soy beans), therefore lets say in Europe or the middle east... People had strong muscles, they had to in order to maintain life, but protein sources were quite limited for the low classes (and please correct if I'm utterly wrong here). All the protein sources I can think of are meat (which was rare), milk (which is limited in protein, plus I suppose there was a cap on it as well, certainly for the levels one need to drink in order to compare to meat), eggs, and various plants which are only available in our globalized world. Did they have more food than I think? Or is that little food is enough for bodybuilding? (in contrast to many trainers food recommendations).
Thank you.

I have been following the news lately about what is going on between Israel and Palestine right now. I think I have a pretty good grasp of the CURRENT conflict, but can someone give me a rundown of how it got to this?

Ive been reading some Wiki on the french naval history and the Spanish armada and they do seem to be a super powers by the 16th century but why were they never as strong in military power and naval power as much as England. Ive read the english by the time the spanish armada set out to invade England they had a massive amount of ships and army but were outclassed by their smaller galleys which were more maneuverable.
Of course their navy must be strong in order to be independent and read that some of their politicians said the navy is their life line, paraphrasing a lot but how did an island nation outclass both those competing nations which seem like had much more resources on their larger sized nations and not simply a colony of either one to become the largest conquering nation ever.

How often is it that archaeologists come across ancient Roman ruins with Latin writing/graffiti that doesn't need to be restored OR is perfectly legible? Similarly, how often often is it that one will come across very well preserved mosaics or artwork?

Specifically, did any Muslim men or women rise to prominence under the Christian rulers? It seems like there must have been a great need for go-betweens between the (I assume) mostly non-Christian population and their foreign rulers. What were the relations like between the outsiders and the locals?

Throughout history, elite and unchecked forces have a habit of subverting the rule of their superiors - for instance, the Praetorian Guard. Could Himmler's SS have overthrown Hitler? Was there ever an attempt or discussion of a change of power by anyone but fringe revolutionaries like Colonel Stauffenberg? If so, how was it planned to occur? As many are familiar, most German troops of any capacity swore a solemn oath to Adolf Hitler, an oath of unquestioning allegiance. What was the real level of loyalty towards Hitler like in the armed forces, the SS, and the Gestapo?

If I was an american citizen in the 1930s-40s, would I know my president was in a wheel chair if I didn't concern myself with politics? If I casually did? Seriously did? Or only if I was privy to this relatively guarded fact about the man?

Hi everyone, I've recently gotten into home brew, and everywhere I go to read, it's sterilize, sterilize, sterilize!
As far as I can tell, people didn't really start believing in germs until quite recently, how did brewers in the old days (or ancient) clean their equipment? Or did everyone just put up with awful tasting beer until recently?
This could also apply to other fermented foods where clean working conditions are required--saurkraut, tempeh, soy sauce, you name it.

I'm asking this since i've never heard about anything like this, though i'm sure it must have happened in some cases, but I also know that going to war has been seen differently throughout the years and in different cultures.
If so, what kind of reactions were there to cases like these?

Some time ago, the fact of Eastern and Central Europe's significant Jewish population (at least prior to World War II) presented itself to me in a way I had never before considered it: Why were they there in the first place? How did this demographic shift take place?
I have come across a couple theories, such as the Khazar Kingdom (which is the subject of a short thread in here and seems discounted), but nothing appears to rest on much solid foundation.
By the Medieval Period, their communities seem well-entrenched, so some amount of time was required prior to this. My basic understanding of the make-up of that region during the late-Roman Empire is that Germanic, Turkic and maybe Iranian or Slavic peoples dominated the area.
Somehow related to their place in the Roman Empire? perhaps they migrated during that period of eased transport... Somehow related to an earlier exile?
To my knowledge, Judaism is not much into proselytizing--compared to Christianity and Islam. So some sort of ethnic migration seems the most likely cause of origin. Is the answer not known?
