A few specific questions about Apocalypse Now

I have read that the overall 'feel' of the movie was an accurate portrayal of Vietnam in much the same way that Jarhead portrayed the boredom and monotony of war - especially the Persian Gulf conflict.

My question involves a few peculiar and awesome aspects of Apocalypse Now. They all have to do with how accurate this was to real life.

  1. Was there really a helicopter division of the US army that was once a calvary division?
  2. Did the military set up USO shows in the middle of nowhere? 2.5 did the army actually set up depos along the river where you actually had to carry money to purchase items?
  3. Was 'the river' as safe as the movie portrayed? One would think a small navy boat would get attacked often. Also did the Navy actually operate a fleet of small river boats?
  4. Was there really a location such as the bridge that the army was trying to defend? A sort-of frontier position (last outpost) that the army forgot about?
  5. Did a high ranking official actually go rogue and rule over a platoons worth of natives as his own private army?

How much did the SS/Einsatzgruppen collaborate with Unit 731?

The Nazi SS, Einsatzgruppen, Totenkopfverbande, and so forth were responsible for most of the WWII Nazi war crimes we know so much about. Likewise, the Kwantung Army's Unit 731 of the Empire of Japan was responsible for some pretty heinous war crimes as well.

What I am wondering is if these Japanese and German organizations collaborated on their human research and shared it with each other at all, or if they even drew any inspiration from one another. Any informative answers would be greatly appreciated!

Did Jacque de Molay's Templar initiation ritual really involve "denying Christ and trampling on the Cross", or did he just say that to avoid torture?

I have recently been reading a bit online about Jacques de Molay, but it's not really clear what actually happened, why he was burned to death, and what he and the Templars actually believed. And why did he go back and forth with confessing and then retracting his confessions several times? I don't really understand his motives or how heresy like this was handled by the government/church at the time. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks.

Have previous nations had to handled large numbers of illegal immigrant children?

At present, residents of diverse Latin American nations are sending children across the borders into the United States. Current press articles are reporting on this controversial issue with terms like "flooding" and "hungry, innocent children", and an inestimable number are coming without their parents.

This question isn't about that current crisis, but it is an inquiry about parallels to it in the past.

Has there been a similar phenomenon in the past? How was it handled? How has it altered the populations of the countries involved?

What is Known of the Knights Templar?

What is known as far as: Their Purpose, Their Direction, What was their Military Level (Ie, if today Knights still fought, would the Knights Templar be known as Special Forces?) , Their Wealth level, etc. If you have insight as to this, i would love to know it. They Fascinate me, much like Sparta; Except Sparta's Society wasn't that secret.

How did the Prohibition EVER gain enough support to happen?

I mean, America was more or less founded on the concept that the government wouldn't try to set the average person's moral compass, right? I realize that around and before this time, other drugs were unfortunately being criminalized as well, but alcohol was arguably the most popular. How did anyone think that prohibiting the sale of alcohol was a good or just idea? It seems to me that it would be apparent that crime would run rampant once people were prohibited from purchasing something they wanted.

Are the correspondences between the Founding Fathers available to read?

I was hearing on the radio about how Thomas Jefferson wrote to George Washington about his reservations on allowing Massachusetts to become a state because of the extremely religious population.
Whether this was true or not, it got me thinking about all the letters in general that were written to each other in regards to their worries and such on forming a new government.

Are the D-Day beaches still called Utah, Omaha, etc?

Were the names given by the Allies adopted? Are the beaches known formally or informally as Utah, Omaha, etc? What were the pre-war names? Do those beaches have any other claim to fame? Are there any other cool facts about the beaches you can share?

My apologies if this is topic already covered.
I gave the search feature my best shot and came up dry.

How did the battle of Sterling Bridge actually happen?

I read that the English army attempted to cross a bridge that only fit two horsemen side by side and that Wallace and the Scots were able to mow them down. Is this actually true? Wouldn't the English has seen how vulnerable they were and couldn't they just turn around once they realized it was a trap?

Was War Communism more in line with what Lenin envisioned for the Soviet economy? Or was the NEP what Lenin wanted all along?

I guess some additional background of what the rest of the Bolshevik leadership thought about Soviet Economic policy would be great as well.

How large were Roman horses?

A few years ago, I had a very intelligent and trustworthy teacher claim that the horses used in Roman times were very small (presumably he meant the size of a modern pony or even smaller). Is there any truth to this? How large were they really?

Where can I learn about Africa's history and politics, leading up to the modern era?

Yes, I'm aware it's a broad topic. "European History" is a broad topic as well, but an overview can still be taught in a single high school AP class.
