I am presuming that these stopped due to the advancement of weaponry (machine guns, bolt action rifles etc) these battles stopped in favour of trench warfare. When was the last Waterloo style battle?

Just bought my first sword! As a start I thought I should buy something that was cheap and had some sort of historical value. But I can't seem to find any mention of swords like this. Only the more decorative counterparts. Anyone have a rough idea of dates on this thing? http://imgur.com/a/xZiYq

So I'm in the middle of my Undergrad career and wasw wondering about the different routes I could take. First, if I were to get into Academia, I know both Spanish and French fluently as well, how would the process of obtaining a professor position be if I were to get my Phd from an ivy league? From a State?
Also, if I wanted to focus on getting a career started in a museum lets say the MET, in NYC, what credentials should I have to be competitive?
Thanks!

After WWI, I believe the use of poison gas was considered wrong and everyone agreed not to fight in such a manner anymore. But given the strong desire to take over all of Europe/the World and the fact they were gassing millions of Jews and other prisoners it seems they would have used gas anyway. This seems especially true as the Allies were closing in on Berlin and the Germans would have become very desperate to fight back anyway possible.

Wouldn't cows or big antelopes be just as good for most purposes?

The trip was 36 hours IIRC, so he had to have taken a dump in the sky somehow.

I know Ford tackled controversial topics such as Incest ('Tis Pity She's a Whore) so his works have only recently been explored by critics, and many of Shakespeare's works were diluted by editors between 17-1800 because they were deemed too depressing for Victorian audiences (King Lear, Titus Andronicus) but were they the most popular writers of their time? Are there any that have actually become less popular in modern years and so are relatively lesser known than they would've been in the late C16th - early C17th?

Today:
Saturday Reading and Research will focus on exactly that: the history you have been reading this week and the research you've been working on. It's also the prime thread for requesting books on a particular subject. As with all our weekly features, this thread will be lightly moderated.
So, encountered a recent biography of Stalin that revealed all about his addiction to ragtime piano? Delved into a horrendous piece of presentist and sexist psycho-evolutionary mumbo-jumbo and want to tell us about how bad it was? Need help finding the right book to give the historian in your family? Then this is the thread for you!

Watching the World Wars from the History Channel and I had no idea that Hitler was imprisoned for treason for trying to take over the government. Why wasn't he executed? I would think that an attempted government take over would be grounds for execution.

For example, President Kennedy was assassinated, I think without argument. But I've heard Lee Harvey Oswald as being both murdered and assassinated. An attempt on musician Bob Marley's life has been described as an attempted assassination. John Lennon's death has been described as both.
Is there a solid definition?

EDIT: As it has been pointed out that this is very broad, I'm primarily concerned with western civilization. I know that certain religions and cultures still value arranged marriages more often than not.
I've (sadly only) heard that the 1800s was when marrying for love became a thing, and that before this time, everyone married out of arrangement, either for political or economical gains, or simply to "join families".

I've been listening to the podcast for about 8 episodes now, the quality is amazing, with some video, maps, paintings, pictures to accompany the podcast. It seems very well researched and It fits with what I've learnt from "The Inheritance of Rome" by Chris Wickham. My only concern is that it seems to put a huge emphasis on christianity as the center of the origins of europe, and at some times I feel as he vilifies Islam, calling it's expansion in southern europe an "infestation". It sounded to me as if he resented the expansion of Islam in north Africa, Syria and Turkey at the cost of the Roman empire and christianity. Am I reading too much into this?
I am of course not at expert on this matter, just an engineer trying to learn some history. I enjoy the podcast a lot and I am learning so much with each episode, I just don't want to learn a biased form of european history and would like to hear out some opinion from historians on this.

Today I was reading a Cracked article (don't judge me) that claimed that Niccolo Machiavelli and Leonardo da Vinci once worked together on a plan to divert the River Arno away from Pisa. Did this really happen? I can't find much to corroborate the story online.
If not, is there any evidence that Machiavelli and da Vinci knew each other personally, as every work of fiction on the period can't seem to resist suggesting?

I seem to have read somewhere that the grammatical structure of english is celtic and so though english is a germanic language essentially it is one spoken by a non native speaker. Does anyone know if this is true?

I assume the shorter sword was just a back up for if the Katana broke or they were disarmed... or fighting indoors. I know Musashi claimed to fight with a sword in each hand though.
Legend says Samurai trained to draw and attack with the sword in one motion... but the "upsidedown" carry style seems counter intuitive to this?
I also have heard the Tanto was possibly exclusively for Seppuku suicide, is this true?
Possibly related: Are there accounts of warriors cutting each other's armor off? It seems Samurai armor was held on with Rope for the most part, and could be compromised by skillful cuts.
