The Han dynasty conquered all the Yue states in the south, but only Nanyue (Vietnam) was able to regain independence. Why?

Did the other Yue states (Minyue, Ouyue) not desire independence? And how did Nanyue achieve independence from the Han? Was it inevitable for Vietnam to become independent of China?

Why is The Star and Crescent considered "The Islamic Symbol"?

When I visited Turkey, our tour guide said The Star and Crescent was actually a Turkic symbol from the Seljuk Turks when they invaded Asia Minor. The Crescent representing the Moon and The Star representing Sirius: the star the Seljuks followed during their conquest. Then sim-saladin, people chose it for Islam too.

But this seems unusual, since Pakistan and Malaysia (for example) choose it on their flags.

I'm guessing it's something to do with the Ottoman empire, but what exactly? Why was it chosen for religious use?

How much was known about Ancient Rome in Europe during the Dark Ages? Was the standard of living higher in Ancient Rome or Dark Age Europe?

Between 500-1100, how much did the kingdoms of the British Isles and other former parts of the Roman Empire know about the lifestyle, history, and culture of Ancient Rome, let's say the year 0? I imagine it must have been a lot, but I wonder why Europe wasn't able to put itself together for so long after the fall of the Roman Empire, given that so many people had been exposed to Roman rule.

What did the Aztecs do with the bodies of their many daily human sacrifices?

They were killing people every day and on festivals sometimes hundreds a day, so they must've had some system for dealing with the bodies. I've heard somewhere a long time ago that they would sometimes cannibalize the bodies, but I don't know if that was more than just a rumor that the conquistadors made up, and anyway they'd still have had most of the body parts to deal with.

Mechanism of "raising an army" in medieval Europe

We often read that King so-and-so, or Lord so-and-so "raised an army". What were the details of that process in medieval Europe (12th century England to pick a specific example)?

My understanding is that there was a hierarchy of vassalage (though the term "feudalism" is problematic) from the monarch through various levels of aristocracy and other landowners down to the peasants and cottars. Is that idea of a hierachial system accurate, or was it more complex than that?

Who was selected for levy, who was spared and why (family structure, needed for other work, favouritism, previous service)? To what extent were levy troops willing and to what extent were they compelled? What was the mechanism for ensuring a functioning agricultural output while supplying troops? How did the call to arms get passed around the geographical area, and how was a coherent body of troops gathered and directed?

Were the Jews actually exiled by Romans or is it a myth?

There is a popular notion in modern Israeli/Palestinian discourse, that Jews were exiled in the past and now their descendants returned this is also found in the Israeli declaration of independence.

The wiki article on this is heavily lacking in citations but I found this from one of the citations there by Jewish History prof. Israel Bartal

"No "nationalist" Jewish historian has ever tried to conceal the well-known fact that conversions to Judaism had a major impact on Jewish history in the ancient period and in the early Middle Ages. Although the myth of an exile from the Jewish homeland (Palestine) does exist in popular Israeli culture, it is negligible in serious Jewish historical discussions. Important groups in the Jewish national movement expressed reservations regarding this myth or denied it completely "

I also found this citation which contradicts the exile theory http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=80j612aFo_4C&pg=PA159&hl=en&sa=X&ei=mj54UYakNJCM4gSK9ICwCQ&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q&f=false

Can someone shed some light on this?

What affect did Old English and Middle English have on Anglo-Norman French?

A great number of French words entered English after the Norman conquest. Did it also go the other way, or was French not susceptible to English influence because of being the language of power?

AMA Panel: History of Pornography and Libertine Literature in Europe, 1500-1850

Good morning!

Feel free to ask us any questions you may have about pornography and libertine literature in Europe from 1500-1850!

The Panelists today:

/u/TFrauline : I'm currently an English PhD student with a thesis focused on analysing the the character and decline of libertine literature during its last years, from roughly 1742 to 1815. I'm primarily looking at novels, which was the premier format for libertine texts during the time, with some key authors being the Marquis de Sade, John Cleland, Choderlos de Laclos, Marquis D'Argens, Samuel Richardson, and Casanova. Despite its literary subject my research is very historically oriented, and i've a solid grasp of Early Modern sexuality/pornographic history with lots of other odd tidbits on subjects like philosophy, travel, social history of the aristocracy, etc. Will be answering questions from 7A-12PM EST, and return tomorrow

/u/vertexoflife : I'm primarily a book historian, but I also deal with histories of sexuality, gender, and privacy. I did my thesis specifically on England, from 1750-1850, and discussed the Society for the Suppression of Vice and how their lobbying helped create the Obscene Publications Act of 1857. I've done two previous AMAs that may be of interest: AMA: History of Sexuality and an earlier AMA: History of Pornography 1400-1800. Will be answering questions from 8A-3PM EST and returning tomorrow

What were the immediate consequences of the fall of Constantinople, on the cities citizens?

I am researching the fall of Constantinople for a school project and although i have found a lot of information about the events and their long term consequences, the effects on peoples lives has been much harder. Any information about the treatment of the common people, the change in the ruling structure and the position of the Orthodox church would be very much appreciated. Because this is a school project sources are essential so that I can check for my self. Any primary sources, that you can recommend, would make my day as this is what i am struggling to find. Thank you.

P.s. I feel like i should add that I am not trying to have you do my work for me, i just need some pointers in the right direction so i can do further research my self.

What is the earliest example of someone researching a potential trip to the moon?

I'm thinking along the lines of giant ladders, or human cannons, or adapted hot-air balloons (because my mind infers this question solely in terms of Warner Bros cartoons), but in all seriousness, It might seem like the sort of thing that a curious king or Victorian millionaire eccentric would task someone with researching.

What did infantry eat in WW2 and how?

I assume troops had to move days at a time and could not get a proper meals from field kitchens, so did they carry allot of rations with them or did they only have a single ration(single day supply) for many days at a time?

I'm curious as to how soldiers were fed and maintained in the whole theater of war. It is mind-boggling to me imagining this. I read that they ate mainly C-rations(USA) if they were not able to get any food, which I assume is most of the time. I try to imagine it and there is no good way to carry so many rations with them. Do troops travel with trucks following close behind with food? How do millions of troops get the proper food? And how do people who are on the front line get food when they will be furthest away from the supplies behind them. Perhaps people in the front line were able to loot food. But if there was no good food loot did they head to an area to resupply on food?

Sorry English is my second language, if there is something I need to clear up then ask me. Also sorry for my long question, I have been thinking all day about this.

When was the concept of self awareness first discussed/ documented?

To add to this, I've been wondering about how self aware people were through the ages. Ancient philosophers, for one, strike me as being very much aware of their surroundings and how they fitted into their society, but what about the rest of the population?

Has there ever been an occurrence in which a region or state has separated from its former country to join another country, and under what terms/ for what reasons?

I apologize if my question is too wordy or complex, but to clarify, I am talking about situations like, for example, Alaska breaking off from the United States to join Canada due to the Canadian population in Alaska.

How dangerous were classical or medieval trade routes?

Are there any historic trade routes for which we have some sort of historic evidence for how dangerous any classical or medieval trade routes were? For example, do we have merchants ledgers documenting what percent of their caravans make it back along the silk road? I'm intentionally leaving the dates and locations vague as I'm not sure where/when good records were kept.
