Were there any notable independence or insurgency movements in the South Pacific during the 20th century?

It seems like this part of the world has been frequently fought over and fought about, and that South Pacific islands have often been controlled by major world powers - but you hardly ever hear about how the people who lived there responded to these events. Have there been any cases of the people who lived in the South Pacific trying to fight off or resist outsiders?

When and why did golf become the default "upper-class hangout/dealmaking" activity? What filled that role before?

So I've heard that learning to golf is kind of a requirement for certain executive schmoozing/marketing jobs, so I was wondering if you guys could fill me in on why and when it became normal for executives, politicians, and other powerful people to play golf while chatting about deals and other such things.

What did they do before golf was popular? I'm guessing riding horses or somesuch, but if someone actually informed could step in, I'd appreciate it.

Is it possible to build a WW2 era tank or fighter plane with current manufacturing equipment, or would we need to recreate tools and equipment that has been outdated?

(I'm not sure if there is a better Ask[x] subreddit for this)

edit: recreated to exact period/wartime specifications.

During the Russo-Japanese War, the Japanese were very respectful to their enemy, and kind and respectful to their POW's, why did they become so cruel and disrespectful to POW's during the Second World War?

I've read a book about Russia during the Russo-Japanese War, and it mentioned that the Japanese were incredibly respectful and kind to their POW's, giving them good food, freedom to go for walks in the park, e.t.c, so much so that many Russian sailors claimed that they were treated worse than POW's. In battle the Japanese also showed a great deal of respect, doing things like saluting sinking Russian ships.

In WWII, however, they were very cruel to POW's and cared very little for their enemy, doing things like desecrating corpses and such.

How did a military with so much honor and respect become so cruel and disrespectful?

How would you characterize the papal monarchy of the 13th and 14th century?

I'm in a Middle Ages class, and I missed a lot of information when we were going over this topic.

What were its main objectives, how did it approach those aspirations ideologically and practically?

All I have in my notes is that the high point was with Pope Innocent III and the papal bureaucracy was corrupt in 1198 when he came into power. I can recall that Innocent wanted to protect the Jews and I'm pretty sure he had a set of laws protecting them from violence, but I'm not sure if that's relevant.

Please excuse any mistakes I've made and please help me correct them. I'm not a history major, this class is just an elective as I am trying to understand history a little more. I'm not very good at it.

Thanks!

About slavery in the US Constitution

This is a homework assignment, but I'm having trouble finding information on the topic. The question goes as follows:

a) Explain three direct ways in which the interests of slave owners were protected by the original Constitution. b) Explain how the functions of government overlap among the branches of the US government.

I'm actually really interested to learn more about it despite the fact that it's homework, so any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Is it true that the 1936 Spanish Revolution created a near 'faultless' libertarian socialist society?

This event is cited over and over again by anarchists as the 'proof' that anarchism works. However, it seems hard to actually find material on the subject.

What US Veteran has fought in the most wars?

The story about Conrad Heyer got me thinking about crazy parts of history. I mean the fact the we have a photo of this man is insane. While my question is pretty specific, I would love to hear other stories like this. I saw a picture of a civil war veteran getting on a fighter jet but his back story was questionable at best. What cool stories do you have for me r/askhistorians

Methodist vs Mormon 1840's?

I'm working on a research paper about the Mormon wars in Missouri and Illinois, and focusing on political and religious contempt (not just the "muggings" "kidnappings" and "pillaging reasons") and i'm noticing a pattern. Many of the big time anti-Mormons were Methodists e.g. Thomas Sharpe (editor of Warsaw Signal), Son of renowned Methodist preacher. Capt Bogart, violating orders and aggressive creating vigilante groups; Methodist preacher. I've looked up religious maps and Methodist is the majority group in both Missouri and Illinois. But my big reason is why METHODIST? Why not Lutheran or Presbyterian? I can't think of any religious doctrine that differs from any other denomination that would create automatic contempt. Any information would be highly appreciated in figuring out this odd motif. I want to see if there's something, if anything, behind this? Thanks!

Could coffee be a cause of the Industrial Revolution?

Coffee drinking arrived in Europe about a century before the Industrial Revolution permanently kicked civilization into a higher gear. Could coffee be one of the reasons?

I think pretty much any high performing individual today uses caffeine daily. It seems to me that pre caffeinated man got a lot less done.

Not sure if this is a historian question, or if it's even answerable, but I'm interested in any thoughts!

Who is the man on this button?

http://twitpic.com/dzy8k4 This is part of a collection of political buttons donated to the library where I work, and we are unable to identify this guy.

The collection includes candidates from local to national US elections, with a high concentration of Massachusetts people. (There are also a handful of non-political buttons, so this could be one of them).

Any help would be appreciated!
