My history teacher taught me that most of the founding fathers represented the American upper class, to what extent is this true? We're some of the founding fathers upper-middle or even lower-middle class? For purposes of this question let's denote founding fathers as those with major leadership positions amongst the patriots for example signers of the Declaration of Independence or generals in the patriot army.

The U.S. came out of the civil war still using wooden ships, and by 1891, ordered 3 steel battleships. They were successfully used in Cuba, and popularity for them increased. However, there weren't any major, significant purchases after, and the U.S. was still low on the foodchain of military powers. When did the U.S. mentality of having the most powerful military take over, and why? Been wrestling with this for a while. Thanks!

It seems like China was essentially exploited by foreign powers, including Japan. Japan had been stuck in the middle ages pretty much before the west arrived, but then became a technological and economical giant to be reckoned with.
How did this come to be?

I am writing a short bio of a Canadian veteran. He mentioned off hand that the artillery is a place where gentlemen served and that it carried the most status in the Army and in the sort of broader social circles. Is this true or does anyone have any support for this? The guy is really old school, pushing 100, served with high distinction in the second world war, and has a long history of family military service.

I found a bunch of campaign buttons at a thrift store and bought the lot of then without really digging through them. When I got home I found this in the bag. Any idea what it means? Is it legit or just a reproduction?
I apologize if this is the wrong subreddit. I'd be happy to post it elsewhere if need be.
Thanks.

In expanding, they would most likely have encountered places like Stonehenge, Carnac and Avebury. Is there any written record of what they thought of these places and their theories on what they were?

Today:
Saturday Reading and Research will focus on exactly that: the history you have been reading this week and the research you've been working on. It's also the prime thread for requesting books on a particular subject. As with all our weekly features, this thread will be lightly moderated.
So, encountered a recent biography of Stalin that revealed all about his addiction to ragtime piano? Delved into a horrendous piece of presentist and sexist psycho-evolutionary mumbo-jumbo and want to tell us about how bad it was? Need help finding the right book to give the historian in your family? Then this is the thread for you!

I know there was a lot of new technology built during this period, but when I google it I get a lot more articles pertaining to the space race than other technological advances. If you know of any books that may have information on this topic as well, that would be very helpful.
