Why did these areas get enclaved? Why didn't they go 'that's dumb, lets just make a line? In what logical world was such a place as Baarle-Hertog/Baarle-Nassau born?
And why did the Partition of India create such (well, outright stupid) borders between Bangladesh (although then it was E. Pakistan I think) and India? IIRC it was the brits who made those lines, why did they do such a botched job?
Why are there only a handful of examples of these in Modem History? (Baarle, Indo-Bangladesh, and I think Oman somewhere)
EDIT: Title could have been worded better as 'more plentiful in history compared to the modern day' but I digress.

Come one, come all to the AMA of the century. This AMA will cover any military campaign that happened from 1935-1941.
If your question deals with a campaign that started After January 1st 1935 and Before January 1st 1942 it is fair game!
Some Clarification: The Opening stages of Operation Barbarossa is perfectly acceptable topic, just please don't ask about what happened after the opening stages. If you really have a question about things after the time period listed, save it I'll be doing a follow up AMA on 1942-1945 soon.
Without further a do, The esteemed panel:
/u/Georgy_K_Zhukov - 20 Century Militaries, military campaigns
/u/ScipioAsina- Second -Sino Japanese War, all around nice guy
/u/tobbinator - Spanish civil war
/u/Acritas - Soviet Union, Russian History
/u/Domini_canes - Spanish Civil War, Bombing
/u/Warband14 -Military Campaigns, Germany
/u/TheNecromancer -RAF, Britain
/u/vonadler - Warfare and general military campaigns.
/u/Bernadito - Guerrilla warfare, counterinsurgency
They all operate on different timezones so if you're question doesn't get answered right away don't worry; it will be eventually.

I had originally thought that this stemmed from Paradise Lost, but I recently read that Dante's Divine Comedy's portrayal of Satan as one among many went against the general teachings of the time, and that was about 300 years earlier. So where does this stem from?

I'm genuinely curious because I'm watching THE AMERICANS (seriously great show) and wondering how things like this used to go down, especially with such well connected people working inside.

Theres an association with pastries as French, sushi as Japanese, pho as Vietnamese, shrimps on the barbie as Australian etc.
In the past this made sense as travel was limited so each culture would develop its food independently, leading to the variations we have now. However with a more connected globe many foods invented in the last 50 or so years have received nationality i.e. the "Shaking Beef" which is associated with Vietnamese but you cant actually find it in Vietnam since it wasnt invented there. Despite this its given the Vietnamese tag, can anyone explain why?

Stalin was slow to react to the invasion before he addressed his people and really respond. What was he doing during that first week?

I can understand nouns, particularly relating to things that are bought and sold (if someone in nice armour with a lot of money tells you they want to buy some panis, you'd probably make them their bread EXACTLY how they wanted it), but how did they enforce the usage of latin verbs? More so, I've heard it said that many poorer people in the Roman empire were speaking koine greek rather than latin in their day to day lives. And why did the languages keep elements of their own foundations, unlike in south america where so many of the native peoples now only speak spanish?
Bonus question! I've also heard that Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese have a similar relationship to ancient Chinese that French, English and Spanish have to Latin. Does anyone know if this relationship formed in the same way?

me and a friend were talking in class and suddenly we got on the topic of whether Pearl harbor was considered a terrorist attack or a battle.
For factual points, I used the fact that It was nation vs. nation and that it was attack on US military. Japan is not a minority group and they didn't attack to impose a message. they attacked so that they could delay the US military and therefore take the pacific islands. Guerrilla warfare usually comes with a terrorist attack, however Pearl harbor was very strategic in it's attack. we may not have been ready for an attack on that exact day, but we already knew Japan was becoming hostile due to advancements to the Malaya area and also being part of the axis powers. also, there's the fact that we actually attempted to defend and managed to fight back a bit. it also lasted 2 hours. terrorist attacks by modern definition usually last a few second or are too quick to react to (explosives, plane crashes).
on the opposition, my friend said it was a terrorist attack just because it was a sneak attack and the fact that he claims war was not formally declared. he also says you have to look at the past definitions. (I disagree)
in the end, we asked our history teachers. they all said it wasn't either terrorism or a battle. we came up with the term "raid"
i'm still dead set on this being a battle considering I find "battle of Pearl harbor" on many history websites and the fact that no one every helps me in an argument and I finally feel comfortable enough with an argument to argue back.
thanks!

The period concerning the Yugoslav Wars straddles the 20 year mark that is the rule for this sub, but my question is about the background and causes of the war.
I understand that the wars were largely ethnic conflicts, which often ferment over centuries, and the Balkans have been considered the "powder keg of Europe" long before the establishment of Yugoslavia. does anyone recommend any good sources to learn more about the conflicts of the 1990s, how they flared up & why?
Thank you!

Does this religion date itself in the thousands? I've read that since it's so close with the Greek pantheon it's because they're related by 8000 possible years! I'm curious if this is correct.

What's the reason for calling the ancient Greek religion "Greek Mythology"? It was a belief system under which a great many people lived their lives so why not call it the Greek religion? Also what is the distinction between Mythology and Religion?

Whenever there is a news story srrounding archive.org or any other kind of preservation society a discussion ensues about the supposed value of preserving e.g. every lesser piece of news or art, regardless of our current valuation of it.
I see then the value of having such public information preserved and think to myself that public archives do a well enough job to pass this heritage on. Though then I remember that personal letters or diaries are used as sources too, quite personal information.
So what kind of things should I preserve for future generations that is not public information in the interest of historians?
I realise the question in the body is different from the question in the title but they are related and the body gives some context.
