I've been reading up on the MiG-25 and the name Viktor Belenko has come up. It got me thinking: have there been any confirmed incidents of Western pilots defecting to the Soviet Union?

Were they domesticated locally? Brought in from the Middle East? Shipped over as part of the Indian Ocean trade network? Some combination of one or more of these options?

If I may rephrase my question a little, I was wondering if the Romans, living by the Julian Calendar, had a concept of their months being broken down into smaller portions?
I have read about the Roman Calendar having designated days of the month called Fasti that were seen as specific days that were thought of as suitable to hold assemblies/festivals/whatever those people were up to. But I couldn't find much about it regarding the Julian Calendar.
So here's my question: Were Roman months broken down into smaller, repetitive cycle of weeks?

I can't remember where I read it, but it was one of those "unintended consequences things." Being forced to wash clothing by hand meant that people often had only 3-4 sets of clothes. The article/book/source said that nowadays people have many times as many clothes, due in part to cheap clothing, but also because automatic washer reduce the workload of having so many clothes.
45 minutes of fruitless googling got me nowhere. Does anyone have some insight to offer?
There was an article linked to in this old AskHistorians thread, but I can no longer find it online.

Someone recently posted something on imgur about different types of torture. All are obviously pretty horrible and brutal.
What i was wondering is were there any individauals or groups who would speak out against torture or specific types of torture?
How common was this? and if not, why?
What people? (peasants, aristocracy the church)
Thank you!

What was life like in the penal colony(ies)? What happened to criminals once they docked in port? Were they just released on to the continent no strings attached? Or, was there a system for integrating the new arrivals into the pre-existing settlements? Lastly, I heard talk about communes established by the criminals; is there any veracity to this story?
I have always been curious about what early life in Australia was like, so if anyone can help enlighten me, or point me towards reading material, I will be a happy history-lover indeed!

The title kind of says it all. As sewerage wasn't invented yet and body odors were common, were farts still considered rude/ gross?

Most of the world's wealth today is concentrated in Western countries, but Japan seems to be the only industrialized country outside the West. How did Japan manage to get so rich all by themselves?

The photograph I am looking for is a specific photograph with two soldiers facing the camera and a tank rolling over the trench. I think it may have been a prize winning photograph. Many thanks!

I mean, is there any type of evidence that Vikings used some kind of protective gloves to prevent enemies from hurting their bare hands holding the sword/axe or some kind of greaves (like the ones greek hoplites had) to protect their legs below the shield?
I'm sorry for my mediocore English, it's not my first language :)

As a Russian, I am alarmed at the amount of casual racism and vitriol towards both ethnic minorities in Russia (Caucasians, for example) and foreign nationalities, like Ukrainians. It is so bad that Central Asian immigrants are more often referred to by racial slurs than by their actual nationalities in everyday conversation.
Older people tell me it was not this bad in the Soviet Union. Was there truly less ethnic tension, or was it kept under wraps by imposed political correctness? Was there discrimination in politics and in the workforce? Also, did ethnic minorities in the USSR harbor anger toward Russians, as some Ukrainian nationalists do today?
Thank you for your answers!

I'm sorry if this has been asked here before. I'm curious if there are any similarities in group structure, activities, et cetera between the gangs selling liquor during the 1920s and early 1930s in the United States (the Capones or something like that) and the gangs selling drugs during the 1990's and the 2000's (Crips and similar gangs). I wasn't quite sure how to go about researching this topic. I'm excited to hear what you folks have to say!

So i'm 28 yrs old, studied in History before college and never ever thought about this possibility. I read about it today, learned about the invasions and defense plans and all so i don't just want to hear the related facts. I'm really wondering why i took for granted that "Switzerland was neutral so it wasn't attacked" and never looked it up a bit more? Is it the way WW2 is taught in High school? Is it because it was never really serious so we don't hear about it and people don't write about it very much? Even my father who is a really huge fan of history litterature never heard of such invasions plan so i'm confused. Can you help?
