Why did the Polish Hussars wear such absurdly impractical wings on their backs?

While I understand that the Winged Hussars doubtlessly looked completely kickass in their winger armor, it seems to utterly impractical to wear to war. Why would they wear such armor?

I guess it's a sort of chicken and egg question I'm asking. Without National Socialism would we never have heard of Hitler or vice versa?

Was "Glory to Ukraine! Glory to Heroes" the slogan of the UPA movement or not?

Recent events prompted me to research is there any far-right connotation in the phrase "Glory to Ukraine! Glory to Heroes". I quickly found a claim linking it to Ukrainian Insurgent Army. But further search for documents revealed not much evidence to support the claim.

The sources I found so far:

  • Log of KGB questioning UPA fighter citing this as one of the slogans. The best source so far.

  • Declaration of Ukrainian Independence by UPA signed with only half of that slogan.

  • Reprint of a secret note citing two absolutely different phrases to be the slogans: «Жить или умереть» and «Смерть московскому народу»

I am sorry for Ukrainian and Russian language sources. But this are the languages I expect supporting documents to be in.

I will appreciate an answer from a historian. It is not a question to stir a political row, but a genuine interest. Thank you.

When did the practice of collecting childrens teeth begin in North America?

It's a bizarre practice, but considered normal among many people I know in the U.S. I remember my mother keeping our teeth we lost as kids in a jar or something in her room.

When did this become normal? When-ish did it start? What sort of cultural phenomena such as this occurs else where?

What happened to the original founder of what became the Nazi Party, Anton Drexler?

Anton Drexler was a man who, after WWI, founded the DAP (German Workers' Party) in 1919. Hitler eventually joined up in 1919 and pushed Drexler out of the leader position of the party, by now renamed the NSDAP (National Socialist German Workers' Party, AKA the Nazi Party). After Hitler's failed 1923 coup, he sort of faded into obscurity. Anyone know what became of him before he died in 1942?

What is the New World drink made from "some root" referred to by Montaigne in his essay On Cannibals?"

Relevant passage:

Their beverage is made of some root, and it will not keep for more than two or three days. It is rather sharp in taste, not at all heady, good for the stomach, and laxative to those who are not used to it; it is a very pleasant drink to those who are. Instead of bread they use white stuff like preserved coriander, which I have tasted; the flavour is sweetish and rather insipid."

The They:

These people inhabit the seashore, and are shut in on the landward side by a range of high mountains, which leave a strip about a hundred leagues in depth between them and the sea.

Also mentioned (in case this helps): They had long, wooden buildings ("barns"), and cotton beds hanging from the ceiling. Each barn was a village. They did not practice agriculture, but instead hunted.

I was reading a book that claimed the passing of the Labor Management Relations Act of 1947 (Taft-Hartley Act) effectively ended the power that unions were gaining in the USA and signaled the end of progressivism in the USA. Is the claim true or false?

I was reading a book by a very progressive leaning author who made no apologies in arguing that the passing of Taf-Hartley signified the end of worker's representation that was just reaching a powerful point in American Politics. He went on to argue that it should be repealed and would help bring back an age of worker's centric politics in America.

However I was reading in the Oxford Companion to US Government that the bill was passed because unions were in fact exercising more than understandable power in situations that weren't even necessary. It basically implied that unions were perceived as abusing their power and that this was why the bill was prompted.

I don't have an idea either way and was hoping if some US politic-oriented historians here could give me a bit of insight into what this bill changed for America as a whole, and if it has as much to do with worker exploitation today as the author claimed?

Thanks!

Why were Muslim leaders in the Indian Subcontinent and Aceh willing to acknowledge Ottoman authority?

I read the Ottoman Age of Exploration a few months back and decided to reread a few sections.

Some sections said that the Ottoman Sultan's name would be read out before prayers in the mosque. Another part of the book quotes the rulers of Aceh practically begging to be made part of the Ottoman empire.

So what's the deal with this? Why not just ask for an alliance, seeing how the Ottomans were so far away?

I'm doing some research for a story I am writing; Tell me, how fast was gun warfare in the 1700s to 1800s?

More specifically, given a musket or early rifle, what type of bullets would be used, how would they be loaded?

Were there any models with "magazines", or was that a 1900's invention?

Also, how long would it taken, after firing, to prepare for another?

Ive had a look at some wikipedia pages but was hoping for some more information on the matter, thanks in advance!

Edit: Also, same questions as above, but with pistols.

What was the motive for Tsuda Sanzo's attempted assassination of Czar Nicholas II?

I saw a post on r/HistoryPorn showing Nicholas II on a state visit to Japan. I'm aware that the Russo-Japanese War took place some years after this, so I was surprised to read in the comments on why Nicholas was in Japan, and that "the Ōtsu incident" occured the way it did. The wiki doesn't go into why anyone in Japan would want to risk provoking Russia at this point in time.

Why were the Inca the only civilization to go the quipu-route for record keeping, while other civilizations all made marks on tablets, papyrus, etc.?

Is the quipu way less efficient than writing? If so, are there any theories as to why the Inca stuck with it instead of developing writing? Why aren't there any other civilizations with this sort of system? Writing developed independently all over the world. Why not the quipu or something similar?
