Meme on Tumblr: “I stopped calling myself a pacifist when I heard Gandhi told women they should not physically fight off their rapists."

Anyone know the source of this claim - some digging lead me to Andrea Gibson's poem, "Etiquette Leash."

I tried googling already and while I've read a lot of not-so-great Gandhi "facts" (didn't bother to verify) that I hadn't known previously, I couldn't find anything close to him stating that women shouldn't fight their rapists.

Can anyone shed any light?

Did the Roman empire export weapons to other states or nations?

I recently read a little about the Roman fabricae and how they may have been used as a major source of weapons in post-Republic Rome (even earlier?). Is there any evidence indicating that Rome sold weapons produced in this manner to other states? I am not referring to traders selling small amount of weapons individually but rather "wholesale" exporting, much like the USA does today with its fighter jets and the like.

How and why did U.S. university campuses become important focal points for the South African divestment movement?

Divestment/disinvestment from Israel is an incredibly contentious issue today, so I'm interested in learning more about the origins of 1970s-1980s South African divestment campaigns on university campuses.

Comparisons between the South African and Israeli divestment campaigns are welcome, but please omit political grandstanding from your discussion. Thanks.

After the Feburary Revolution in 1917, what government powers did the Provisional Government have, specifically?

Reading Robert Service's "Spies and Commissars" and though he does a really good job talking about the politics of the people involved, he does little by way of explanations of how the governments actually acted.

Judging from this lack of information about what the Provisional Government actually did during 1917, you'd think all of Russia was an untamed chaos, and the only areas of actual societal organization came from the Soviets in the cities and the Communes in the farmlands where they sprang up. Is this true, or am I missing something? What exactly did the Provisional Government have power over?

What happened to the Chicago Mafia?

It seems that when people consider the "Mafia" or the Cosa Nostra in the U.S. it is always in reference to New York/Tri-state area.

However, when you speak of it historically, Chicago played a major role. In fact, during the War my grandfather said that people would ask him if he was from Chicago and if he knew any Gangsters.

Where did it go? How did they lose influence?

Were Zeppelins used in World War II ?

I know that they were used in the early 1930's for Nazi propaganda, such as the Hindenburg being flown over the 1936 to show the world the might of Germany science and engineering, but were Zeppelin's used for anything else in World War II?

After the Great Depression in the US, who did better economically? People who still used banks, or people who stopped using them? Is there any evidence of the difference?

I'm just wondering if there is any historical evidence of whether or not it was a good or bad choice for people after the Great Depression to stop using banks because they no longer trusted them. I've heard many stories of older couples simply "stowing money away under the mattress". I assume that a larger percent of the modern population uses banks vs. the population that suffered through the GD, and I wonder whether that really makes much of a difference when compared.

Mongolia today seems to be a sparsely populated country: how was Genghis Khan able to field enough warriors for his extremely large empire?

Were Genghis' armies made of only ethnic mongolians? Or were other groups recognized that would have helped the size of his army?

Obviously the State's spending was much higher but by how much? In particular, was there a time during the Cold War when Canada's spending was similar to that of the US? Also, how much did Canada's Avro Arrow compare to American jet fighters of the time in terms of cost?

The idea of whether presidents will be remembered kindly, or not, by history after leaving office

Some of the presidents of the United States have left office with low approval ratings and some supporters claimed that history will remember them kindly. How often do presidents end their terms with good or bad approval ratings but end up being remembered poorly or kindly respectively?

In other words has making the unpopular choices worked out for many of the presidents and the United States?

(I notice that this is a US centric question but it can really apply to any nation.)

What are the earliest records of ethnic restaurants?

In the US today, I have the luxury of being able to eat at a variety of "ethnic food" restaurants (with varying degrees of authenticity, admittedly).

I can decide to have Austrian, Thai, Italian, Salvadoran, Ethiopian, etc.

At what point in history did this become "a thing"? Did Roman soldiers go out after a long night drinking to try that new Egyptian joint they'd heard so much about? Did the Sumerians have a hankering for Akkadian grub for brunch?

Note that I'm not asking about the cultural penetration of individual food items. The fact that you can get spaghetti at Denny's doesn't make it an Italian restaurant. I'm talking about restaurants that are pointedly of a cuisine other than the 'norm' for the host culture.

Follow-on question: what are the earliest records of restaurants at all?

BBC's The Great War (1964) vs. The First World War (2003)

hey there everyone, I have stumbled upon several posts on here praising the former as one of the most brilliant documentaries ever, not just about the great war - how does the latter compare? are the differences superficial and both provide good history, or is one significantly different/more in depth/whatever than the other? i have some idea about the conflict so a 'ww1 for dummies' approach isn't necessarily what i'm looking for but at the same time i don't think i would find a droning voice going on about fact and figures entertaining or enlightening
