Did bar fights and shootouts happen in the wild wild west?

Firefly's numerous bar fights sparked this thought. How often did bar fights happen. I just don't see how a saloon owner would allow a fight to happen where people broke stools over each other heads. I have the very hollywooded version of bar fights in my head. I have this thought in my head that the bar tender would pull a gun and some cow boy would go into standoff mode with him... So what actually happened.

I've hear this phrase used every now and then but I'm not sure where it originates from. I assumed it started with Germany's war machine during WWII. Edit: Thanks for the answers :)

A question about Roman soldiers and slaves

Some site on the net said:

Slaves given to Roman soldiers to reward them for performance in battle were known as addicts. Eventually, a person who was a slave to anything became known as an addict

Is that information accurate? Were Roman soldiers rewarded with slaves?

16th-18th Century - What would sailing on the open seas during a severe storm be like?

I've been wondering about this for world-building purposes since playing Black Flag. What would happen if, say, lightning struck the mast? Would any naval battles have taken place during storms?

Are precursor wars a myth or a legitimate part of military history.

I am interested in the existence of precursor wars, whether they are myths or actually recognized parts of military history. For example, I have heard that the Anglo-Boer Wars were precursor wars to World War I. How is that so? Can certain smaller wars be identified as precursors to other larger wars? Do these precursor wars have particular name?

How did the English Reformation provide impetus for settlement of North America?

From what little I understand, many of the English that first settled in North America did so because of religious reasons. Could someone confirm and expand on this? How else did the Reformation drive colonization?

Why did the Dreyfus Affair affair lead to 20th century totalitarianism?

We were discussing this in my AP European history class today. My teacher said this brought anti-Semitism to the forefront, but if I've learned anything in history classes, the Jews have always been disliked and used as scapegoats. How did the rise in anti-Semitism lead to totalitarianism?

How far back in time could a modern english speaker go in England before needing a translator?

At what point does the English language become distinctly modern, and when was it a completely different language? I know from looking at old Beowulf manuscripts that I would not do well in England when they were written, but Shakespeare's English, while different, is certainly understandable.

Found a Nazi Badge (or something?). Does anybody have any more info on this?

So after my great grandfather passed I was cleaning out his house and came across THIS hidden in the back of a drawer, in a little box.

I really didn't know much about his past. He never talked about it and I never really asked. He wasn't exactly the friendliest guy. Anyway, if anybody knows anything about this I'd be curious to know what it is.

It says "Deutsches Reich 1937" on the front, and on the back it says "Paul Von Hindenberg 1847-1934"

Did a bit of Googling myself, with no real results, before I decided Reddit might know.

Thanks in advance :D

EDIT: also, if this is totally the wrong place for this, sorry :/

Why don't the Japanese and Koreans typically look at China as a "mother nation" so to speak?

Both of their cultures, languages, and practices have their origins in Chinese culture. Why do they not typically look at it that way, at least by what I have seen/heard. Have the cultures drifted so far apart?

Who *are* the Cossacks?

While reading about the Olympics I've come across several references to Cossacks (for instance a picture here), which surprised me, as the image of Cossacks in my mind is very much linked to Imperial Russia. When I looked into this subreddit, I found I was not the only one with this mental roadblock. Both this and this post give good and interesting information about the rise of Cossacks and how they lived, but again they cut off around 1920 and speak only in the past tense.

My question is, what has happened to the Cossacks since 1920? How have they been living, and where? What have they been doing? And finally, how do they fit into modern Russia?

I realize the last question bumps into the 20 year rule, and if you'd like to limit your answers to pre-1994 experiences and events, that's fine. There's just this unexplained 100 year gap. It reminds me of mainstream American narratives and images of American Indians, whose narratives often lead up to 1890 where they stop and are frozen. Do we have this gap here just because we're (I'm assuming mostly) not Russian? Or is this a hole in the general narrative of Russian history as well?

Edited for formatting and clarity.
