He said that included manuscripts, scrolls, engravings, art, temple art, etc. Everything. He didn't specify the format, but likely gif or jpeg. Or maybe he meant if the text were actually typed into a doc. using an appropriate font, but I thought he specifically said pics.

This is silly, but I'm a bit confused after watching Pride and Prejudice. Why is it that Lady Catherine DeBourgh's daughter can inherit her estate, but the Bennet sisters cannot inherit their fathers? Were the inheritance laws for British noblemen (and women) different than those for common citizens in the 18th century?

Just a question, I was wondering about what could cause that catastrophe?

Am I arrested? If so, who arrests me? What does my trial look like? Where am I tried, and who judges me? What kind of sentence can I expect? How were laws enforced and justice administered in the provinces of the Late Empire?

The bible talks much about slaves, how to keep them and use them etc. What kind of people were these slaves?

I was recently told that in the past it was possible to obtain a hunting licence to shoot aborigines. I have not been able to find any solid evidence of this online. Is this true? If so, what was the nature of the licence?

To clarify i mainly want to know about resistances on the Western front (ex. Belgium, Norway, France). I've read some accounts of history saying that the Nazis occupying these countries swiftly put down the resistances brutally and efficiently while others commend the resistance and claim it was effective in the collapse of the Nazi regime. I just want some information on the effectiveness of resistances in Western Europe, and possibly some sources to back these claims.
Thanks

I'm just curious. Also, it does not have to be limited to an American pilot. Are pilots treated differently in each major nation?

I'm writing a paper on Thomas Middleton's A Game at Chess which ran for nine days before being pulled from production. I'm trying to figure out how long that was relative to other plays.

A pie being thrown into someone's face is a classic gag, but I am wondering where it got its origins? I assume it came about during the vaudeville era, but I still wonder how it came about. Thanks!

I found an old sign that is made out of wood, but still has the modern reflective green/white lettering on it. Given the age of my apartment building where I found the sign (just around 100 years old), this leaves a very wide range of how old the sign could be.
If it helps, I live in a rural town in eastern Oregon that used to be dominated pretty heavily by Boise-Cascade.
I know this isn't really a debate forming question, but I hope someone around here knows something!

Hi, r/AskHistorians! For a debate in my European History class, I'm trying to prove that Denis Diderot was more of an influential thinker than Voltaire. And, well, it's kinda tough seeing how I even think that Voltaire was pretty awesome. Any suggestions?

Dr. McPherson should need no introduction to those of you who have made the Civil War a subject of particular study. He is the author of numerous books on the war, the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, and other related subjects -- most recently War on the Waters: The Union & Confederate Navies, 1861-1865 (2012). Dr. McPherson won the 1989 Pulitzer Prize for Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era (1988), has served on the editorial board of Encyclopedia Britannica, as the president of the American Historical Association, and as the George Henry Davis '86 Professor Emeritus at Princeton. We are very excited to welcome him to /r/AskHistorians, and hope that you will have many interesting questions to ask.
The format of Dr. McPherson's AMA will differ somewhat from our typical ones in that it will be less "real-time" than usual; the top questions submitted by readers will be sent to him via e-mail, and his answers posted later that afternoon via a registered account with the help of one of our mods. Dr. McPherson is not yet familiar with Reddit from the inside out, but he's keen to talk with everyone here all the same; we're happy to be able to help.
I hope you will join us this Friday for Dr. McPherson's AMA, and in welcoming him to /r/AskHistorians.
Our thanks go out to /u/anastik for helping get this set up. We appreciate it immensely!

I just started reading a little about the Beaver Wars, and I was curious what sort of mid-17th c. firearms Henry Hudson would have sold to the Iroquois Confederacy. All I've been able to find is that he sold guns, but I don't really know anything about weaponry, especially in that era.

I'm curious as to how accurate our interpretation of history is, based on the physical evidence left behind.
A very poor example is how the ancient Egyptians used to worship cats; if future beings excavate humanity at its present, they would find the 'Internet' which was accessible to most of the world, many cat pictures are there. But so are recipes, Facebook statuses. To be fair, they'd have to restore an entire electrical grid and infrastructure to determine any of their cultural relevance.
How can we determine what facts we uncover are very relevant, and which are not?

I found some on google (this one looks promising), but I wanted to make sure I picked one worth reading. I tried asking /r/booksuggestions, but no one really had any ideas. Thanks!

For example could a random peasant go to a parish and apply for priesthood and receive the training or were there certain requirements?
