All the other denominations in bills are paralleled in coins - 1, 5, 20, 50, 100 (the 1 dollar coin). But instead of having a 20-cent coin we use a quarter (or instead of having a $25 bill we have a $20). Is there some historical rhyme or reason behind this asymmetry? How were the denominations of coins to be minted and bills to be printed chosen in the first place?

I have to do an essay on the similarities between the two but am finding it extremely difficult to do so without being very general/vague.

everyone cites the mid-20th century as the beginning of the movement, how accurate is that?

I've been studying the relatively early history of the electrical telegraph in England. Especially right around 1850-1851 when the Great Exhibition was taking place. This would have potentially been the first time that the lower classes could have come into first hand contact with electrical devices. It's probable that they would have known what a telegram was but would they have had any understanding of the mechanism behind it?
Basically I'm trying to understand how the very uneducated would react to electrical phenomena. I think we're a bit far along for people to call it witchcraft at this point, but would there have been some skepticism, fear, wonderment? I know a lot about the technology but very little about the social aspects.

I've seen some comments stating that "history is written by the winners" is a wrong statement and I wanted to ask the sophisticated part of reddit about it.
Is there historical evidence for the "losers" to be banned from writing history?

I'll be monitoring this question for a week and will answer questions if you'd like to narrow down the topic.
I'm specifically interested in when and why. My pinpoint is on the cardinals red and black cossack, zucchetto, and sash, and of the Jesuit's interpretation of such but others might find broader information interesting.

Was it culturally acceptable to write in public with a travel typewriter? In trains? Cafés? Parks? Apartments at night? The sound of the typewriter is a physical presence so I would assume conventions around its use developed similarly to other machines such as the cellphone. In cinema though, it never seems questionable or rude to type.

I'm curious about the history of Russians in Siberia. When did exploratory expeditions begin? How did they treat the locals? Was there a collective push east by Russian pioneers akin to the Oregon Trail? Thanks in advance.

Title pretty much says it all. So many movies and books depict wars in the middle ages (and yes, I use that term vaguely because I'm not sure how much more specific I could be) as filled with rape and looting. Was it really as common as they depict?

Were Hitler's ideas of a "superior race" and the perceived negatives of the Jewish people held only by a few Germans, or were they widely held beliefs that Hitler rallied around to gain power? To what extant were Hitler and his immediate circle lone actors as opposed to a reflection of German sentiment?

In particular I' thinking of the Battle of Glorieta Pass. Were there other battles in the West? Were they not decisive to the war and was that why they are hardly mentioned?

I have a general idea of the differences of roles between pre-Renaissance and Renaissance artists; however, I'm hoping that my knowledge can be expanded on. At what point did artists go from being commissioned by the Church only and rarely being given credit by name to being commissioned by patrons, achieving fame and being able to create art in whatever subject they wanted? What factors influenced this change?

It would be almost unfathomable to think of the Secret Service assassinating the president and then power transferring to the other party... and it happening quite frequently at that. So what about Roman culture made it seem to be a frequent occurrence?

I'm so sorry to ask this but I'm desperate. I've attended class and I've taken very good notes but I can't seem to find any of the terms in my textbook or how they're related in my notes.
Here's the format of the exam:
Group 10 of 20 terms into 5 pairs and
Explain how the two terms are related. The two terms may be examples of the same phenomenon in different countries; or they may be examples of opposing sides in a particular struggle (war, policy debate, philosophical difference, etc.); or one may follow from the other as effect follows from cause; or there may be some other relationship that you discern.
Explain what larger trend or development these terms illustrate or exemplify. Usually, this will mean making a connection between these terms in their national context(s) and broader European trends.
I will pm you the terms if you would be so kind as to help me.

I'm looking for two things really - cost estimates for universal healthcare before it was implemented, and an after implementation analysis on how accurate the estimate was and explanations on any discrepancies between the estimate and actual cost. For a little more detail on what I would like to find:
Cost Estimates - I'm interested in ideally the best non-partisan cost estimate given before implementation. The US government has the CBO which is supposed to be non-partisan and gives budget estimates, so I'm hoping that other countries have similar offices that are supposed to give official estimates. I'd prefer an 'official' estimate rather than an estimate given by a political party or non-government entity.
Cost Analysis - I understand this one is a bit tricky, so I'd understand if people could only provide the estimates without the analysis - especially since the analysis is more likely to have partisan aspects. Ideally, I'm hoping for either a government commission, white paper, or a think tank analysis.
Unfortunately, I can only really read English at a high level so I'm hoping that any data from non-English speaking countries would be translated. Also, I'm only interested in countries that actually implemented universal healthcare, rather than countries that have debated it and produced estimates but never implemented it (so no US data please).
I'm not expecting one document to have all countries in it (or even cover both parts of this question), so if you could point me to one document that just deals with one nation that would be extremely helpful!

I know nothing about Alexander's life and times but it seems like they were plenty of places he could have tried to conquer but didn't. Where does this quote even come from?
