When did we move away from the notion of "primitive" peoples?

I'm reading a book published in 1971 (Harold Livermore's The Origins of Spain and Portugal), and the introduction has a rather superior and arrogant tone regarding the "primitive" peoples who occupied Iberia prior to the arrival of romanitas, as well as the period of Muslim rule in Iberia. I associate this attitude with an earlier mode of historiography. Am I way off on my timing here, or is Livermore actually out of sync with the academy, clinging to a pre-historicist way of thinking?

Did the daughters of medieval nobles marry as young as presented in many fictional universes, such as "A Game of Thrones"?

In George R R Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, most women characters are married before their twentieth birthday. It seems that, in this fictional setting, fifteen is the average age of marriage for wealthier girls. Now, I understand that this series is certainly not at all an accurate representation of medieval life (it's set on an alien planet full of giants, dragons, and the undead), but the more mundane aspects of Martin's world seem to be directly inspired by premodern Europe.

Danaerys Targaryen marries at age 13. Many other girls are barely older when they marry, and no bride over age eighteen seems to appear in the books at all. Was this frequency of teen marriages something George R R Martin took from 15th century England, the period he most directly models, or is this a fabrication?

Was the development of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! influenced by the generation gap of the 1960s and '70s?

The incredibly successful Hanna-Barbera children's cartoon series Scooby Doo, Where Are You! ran from the late 1960s to early 1970s, during the height of protests against the Vietnam war and Hippie movement, at a time when the generation gap, of Baby Boomers and their parents, was considered to be a serious affair.

In the series, the young protagonists (who conform to various youth stereotypes of the era) drive a psychadelically-painted van (also an emblem of 1960s youth) and solve supernatural mysteries. Nearly every "monster" turns out to be a clean-cut, often affluent older person, with short hair and an uptight demeanor. Is the 1960s generation gap considered to be a major influence on Scooby-Doo? Was there public outcry to a children's show featuring hippie/beatnik characters that differed from what was considered "acceptable" youth behavior?

Spelling of Ides in the Roman Jullian Calendar

My first child was born on March 15 last year. This spiked my interest in the famous or rather infamous "Ides of March" and the Jullian Calendar. I have been noticing that different sources on the internet have it spelled different ways. I have seen IDES, EIDES, EIDUS or EIDVS. And March is MARTIVS.

My question is which is correct and what recommendation might you have of a good source on the Ancient Roman Jullian Calendar that I can reference?

How is Gorbachev remembered in today's Russia?

In the West, Gorbachev is somewhat romanticized, or at least credited with being reasonable and understanding in trying to reform the USSR.

However, for some Russians (or other USSR loyalists) I could see how Gorbachev could be seen as a weak leader who more or less allowed the break up of the soviet bloc countries, and eventually the collapse of Moscow.

Any insight would be appreciated, and any conjecture regarding how this effects Russian international relations today is welcomed, just please signify that it is conjecture.

Did the newly released Communist Manifesto have any influence on the Revolutions of 1848?

Curious what effect Marx and socialist/communist theorists had on the often overlooked revolutionary wave of 1848. Seems like it would've been a great time with enough turmoil and unsatisfied masses to boost a communist state into power.

How was snow removal handled in ancient cities?

After spending the better part of this last week shoveling my driveway and slipping around on the roads, I got to thinking: how did ancient cities handle snow removal? What about medieval?

Was there an attempt to remove the snow, or just work around it? Were there organized public clearing services like ox-driven plows? How debilitating could a snowstorm like the one the northeastern United States just got (~12-15 inches in 3 days) be to a city in Gaul, Rus, Qin China, or Roman provinces?
