You know I think a great side question would be "What made same Europeans start to realize slavery is NOT a good thing?".

I'm talking about architecture, package designs (i.e. tea or soap cases), cars, advertisements, book covers, etc. Are there economic reasons or is it just a change in aesthetics or preference for more minimalism/functionality or other reasons?
I'm aware that taste is subjective, but I think it's a fair point to say that there was generally more love for detail and "beauty" in older designs. Maybe these two pictures will get my point across: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c4/Tea_box_Ocean_Queen.jpg/220px-Tea_box_Ocean_Queen.jpg vs. http://allahabad.cheershopping.com/productimage/large/21047lipton-green-tea-bag.png
PS: I tried this on AskReddit, but the feedback wasn't overwhelming. Couldn't find anything on this subject by way of Google either. I tried my best to abide by the rules of this subreddit - if there's anything wrong with it, let me know and I'll edit my post.

What hand did the US and Cuban governments have in it? Who were these refugees? And, is there any truth to the claim of Fidel Castro purposefully releasing violent prisoners and mental patients among the refugees?

Civil or Multinational wars.

Someone in my archaeology class made this comment, and I thought it to be a bit odd, having been to several house sites, I found it odd I had never heard of this fact before. I quickly checked some of my books, to see if there was any truth to this and found nothing. So am I right in doubting this or is there any truth to it at all?

I of course know that initially WWI was known as "The War To End All Wars" and "The Great War" and various other very dire sounding titles, but when did the idea of a "world war" come into common use? And if it was before WWII, when was it recognized that this conflict was another world war?

I saw this album of historical Disney princess outfits ( http://imgur.com/a/Gxbkw) and was wondering how accurate the artist had been. This seems like the place to ask.

Nowadays if you want to move from (for example) New York to California, you simply move. You might need to update your address with the DMV but for the most part you can just get a job in a new state and start paying taxes.
Was this always the case? Was there ever a time when moving to a new state was closer to moving to a new country? (I'm thinking in terms of status as a citizen)
Edit: Thanks for the answers everyone! This subreddit is awesome.

Hello folks,
I realize that this is not the usual content found in here, but I do require help and I hope you can help me.
I have a paper to write about how the Aeneid, more specifically book 6, supposed the Augustan empire.
The exact prompt is
How does Book 6 of The Aeneid support Augustan authority?
I am just at a loss as to what topics to argue with. I have read book 6 as well as the previous 5 and the only thing that comes to mind is when Aeneas descends to the underworld to talk with his father and his father pretty much "predicts" the future of Rome. That can be seen as destiny and support the Augustan empire, but nothing else comes to mind.
Also, nothing comes to mind when I have to come up with a counter-argument which I will have to rebut.
Writing is definitely not one of my strong skills, even average skills so any input will be appreciated.

Not sure if this is the right place but I was wondering if anyone knew what this symbol meant. Only thing I've found is its possibly Germanic.

For instance, would it have been considered rude to carry your sword into another lords castle?

Obviously it was colonized in a very real sense by freed American slaves, but why did that stop the European powers? Was there an understanding that the USA would act as a guarantor of Liberian independence? Or was it a more ideological sense that because Liberia already had colonizers who were there on a civilizing mission (even though the colonizers weren't white), that European colonization wasn't necessary?

Forgive the homework help like nature of this thread, but I have to try. I am one week from submission and stressing/struggling with my PhD thesis on 70s American political violence. My supervisor is too busy to help at the moment and friends and family, though well-intentioned, have not had particularly useful feedback. I'm looking for as much help as anyone is willing to offer- read a chapter or two, comment and point out any obvious errors that I've missed because I'm too close to the damned thing at this point. I'd be very happy to return the favour! I'm looking particularly for any spiffy flared members in here, preferably anyone with a PhD.

I'm talking like Kite shields. I've recently started playing Dark Souls, and I noticed how the player wielded a shield, most noticeably with kite shields that the grip is perpendicular to the shield and not parallel like i thought all shields were. Meaning that when the character held the shield the point or bottom of his shield would be at his elbow/bicep. is that historically accurate? did people hold shields like that? has my entire childhood of playing pretend as a knight been a lie????

I just observed that many of the well known composers for classical music have been from Germany. Handel, Beethtoven, Mendelssohn, Bach, Wagner, and Brahms were all from Germany. I am curious as to why this is. Was music and the arts promoted in Germany more than in other countries?

Sorry to link, but obviously, IDing a photo.
http://www.abbeville.com/interiors.asp?ISBN=0789202999&CaptionNumber=01
Presumably when the wall fell.
The photo fascinates me because it reminds me of the famed post-WWII sailor and his lover photo. The publisher of this book (well, the American publisher) cannot ID it, I've emailed asking. The book with the photo was originally published in Italy but no luck reaching them.
Thanks...I've become obsessed with this image, and for no real good reason -- which makes it all the more fun.

What relation did Cossacks have to the Muscovite and Imperial Russian state?
I'm sure this changed over the centuries. Did they see themselves as subordinate to the Tsar, or more like equals in some sort of partnership?
