While it is stated that Viking men would go to Valhalla, Folkvangr or Hel, it is never really said anywhere that I could find where women go when they die. Is there a female Valhalla? Do women just go to Valhalla anyway? Did they become Valkyries? How does it work?

If I was either a nobleman or a merchant of average wealth in the 1700s who wanted to travel from, for example, Paris to Vienna or from Copenhagen to Prague: What would be my main method of transportation and how long would the journey take me?
Would it be horseback? If so, would I use my own horse or would I "rent" one?
Would it be horse and carriage? If so, would I use my own or would I "rent" a carriage and driver?
I'm writing a novel set in the period so I'm just trying to loosely gauge how people moved around at the time and roughly how long it took.

Hello all, I've been reading some political history of Spain. One theme I've noticed is that all the regions within Spain seem to be called "Autonomous Regions." Is Spain simply a collection of Autonomous Regions that get along? Or does the Spanish cultural identity keep a strong cohesion between those regions? What stops them from simply breaking away and balkanizing the Iberian peninsula? I've noticed in my research that these current divisions are from the constitution in 1978, how was Spain divided beforehand (i.e under Franco/the second republic/monarchy?) Thank you and I'm sorry for so many questions in one post!!

After the end of the Cold War Russia was in the throes of a deep economic crisis. Why didn't the US create a "Marshall Plan 2.0" to help Russia and get it to become an ally the same way we did in Europe after WW2?

I recently found a blog post which claims that if transgender teens truly felt such intense dysphoria that they were at risk of suicide, there would be a massive of historical writing about this "medical emergency," starting with Greece and the Roman Empire even if medical procedures were not tried. They cite a lack of medical interventions for these supposed transgender children and lack of writing about them being at risk of suicide as proof that it is a modern phenomenon.
They then use this claim to further the point that trans people worrying about the mental health of transgender children who aren't allowed to transition are making a mountain out of a molehill. Needless to say, I was suspicious of the idea being pushed that absence of evidence is evidence of absence, especially since it makes a large deal of assumptions about how ancient societies should or would have acted. So just how true is this? Are there no examples in history of children experiencing extreme dysphoria as proposed here?

I would like to ask if during the Vietnam War the soldiers used to listen to music for motivating themselves. And if so, which kind of audio player did they use.
I'm just trying to figure out which kind of device did they use. I would like to know if portable audio players did already exist.
Thank you so much.

Follow-up questions: To what extent did women have control over bustles as part of their fashion? How did women feel about bustles at the time, whether the experience of wearing them or the visual silhouette?

It seems awfully progressive for people back then to knowingly elect a disabled president, so I started wondering. Was it something he kept secret? And if so, to what extent? Was it something only other world leaders knew, or the American public? Citizens of other countries? And lastly, was it something used against him during elections, like the slander ads of today? Basically, I’m wondering how much his disability affected public perception of him during his own lifetime.

I know it's impossible to accurately calculate his wealth, but some things make me wonder if he was really that rich compared to other known wealthy figures. Like was the amount of gold he used to drastically increase inflation really that much gold, especially back in the 1300s? Was his wealth really just massive compared to the medditerrain? Is his wealth only calculated by the amount of money it would take to disrupt the north African economy plus how much gold they potentially mined in his empire? Is there a reason the richest man ever didnt leave a historical mark beyond a college, especially since other emperors built pyramids and giant statues?

Where did it originate from? Do Native Americans have origins in India, or was it a slur of some kind?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but any normal human wouldn't die from anything except the absolute WORST being done to their heel. Certainly a puny arrow wouldn't kill anyone unless they got EXTREMELY UNLUCKY and bled out. So was it said that Achilles was superhuman on his whole body and average on his heel, or was he below average and incredibly weak when it came to his dreaded soft spot? Because like I said, while it would be tremendously painful, I just can't see any normal humans dying from a heel shot

Do we have enough information nowadays to say he was a black man, or is that a stretch, and we cant be sure of his color ?
I have been trying to do some research on the topic, just for curiosity, but cant seem to be able to find any information that makes my mind, maybe because that information doesnt exist.
Ps : I know this question has been asked once before, but wasnt satisfied with that post’s answers.

Thursday Reading and Recommendations is intended as bookish free-for-all, for the discussion and recommendation of all books historical, or tangentially so. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:
Asking for book recommendations on specific topics or periods of history
Newly published books and articles you're dying to read
Recent book releases, old book reviews, reading recommendations, or just talking about what you're reading now
Historiographical discussions, debates, and disputes
...And so on!
Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion of history and books, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.

I feel like I very often read that death, rape and destruction was rife from the stone-age to victorian times and history never seems to touch on the trauma caused by this.
Woman lost so many children it was normal, but that didn't mean they weren't traumatised? I think historians and authors miss this out.
Also, were marriages and partnerships so loveless? Did cave people fall in love? Or did the man just grab a woman?
Disease before antibiotics were was incredibly common, and often fatal, but did that mean people weren't distressed when their loved ones became ill?
I just feel the human element of history is often overlooked. Or am I wrong? I hope I am.

I was doing the research on the history of medicine and this information made me depressed for days. Unfortunately, I can't recall what the source I was reading or even the language of it. Would really appreciate some help and any educational context.

In Game of Thrones, scribes are sometimes called "knights of the mind", and I am told that it's because training someone to read, write, and know a lot about literature was as time-consuming and expensive as training someone to be a knight. How true is this? What did it take to turn someone fully literate, and how did this investment compare to creating a knight?
