Nowadays, there is a wealth of war history books that are well-researched and take an academic approach to the analysis of military strategy, yet are accessible to non-academic readers.

When did these kinds of books first appear? And when did public interest in them take off?

For the really big historical battles, tens or even hundreds of thousands dead...

How were the battelfields cleaned up afterwards? Bodies? Arms and munitions? Trenches? Etc..

Especially in older times, say 1600's or earlier?

I am wondering how much the Ottoman rule affected their daily life. Was the glory of Ancient Greece still respected?

As a Norwegian, I've always been curious about why our coat of arms (Riksløven) features a lion. The crown and the axe makes some sense to me, but the lion does not. As you might know, Norway is famous for NOT having any lions in the wild. So this iconography has always perplexed me...

In later years I've learned that the coat of arms of my Nordic cousins Sweden, Denmark and Finland also have one or more lions, further adding to my curiosity.

Where does this fascination with lions stem from? How long have these coat or arms featured lions? And why doesn't the coat of arms of Nordic countries feature native Nordic animals instead? A crowned elk with a axe would be really bad-ass, and it might be more appropriate considering the Nordic fauna.

I know from previous questions here that the aesthetic regarding the quality and design of their uniforms was based on the choice of the commander. This commander was a noble who bought a commission. I also know that cavalry was typically composed of the nobility, or otherwise wealthy, at least previously in history.

Without nobility, how did the US organize its cavalry?

Cleopatra is one of the most well known pharaohs of all. She was a manipulator and a strategist, but not really a leader. Which begs the question; what made Cleopatra’s death so devastating that Egypt just fell to pieces over it?

I have recently been to Krakow, and saw first hand the concentration camps and it has absolutely shell shocked me. I am still in total disbelief and its made me feel weird.

I know this is an incredibly touchy subject but I want to understand what the Nazi's were thinking. What their justification was for such evil. It has to be more nuanced (if not still obviously disgusting) then that.

As a present-day Christian the Crusades seem unthinkable, but I’m obviously thinking from a contemporary perspective living in a secular society. Was there anyone in the Catholic Church who opposed Crusades, particularly from a theological perspective?

So I have been studying European History, and my professor, every now and then, has brought up how unprepared Poland was for the first world war. He has painted this sort of picture of what is essentially the Polish riding into battle on horseback with swords and spears against the invading german tanks and armed infantrymen, and subsequently being demolished. How accurate is this image, and if it is accurate then how did Poland get so developmentally behind of the rest of Europe?

My friend and I are working on recreating a figure of a Turkish soldier from the Gallipoli battle, but we aren't sure exactly what the uniform would have been at that point in time. Would anyone be able to provide me with some information as to what the standard uniform and equipment would be and potentially some photos if you have them? I was watching the World War 2 gold heist Kelly's Heroes and I was curious if there are any real life examples of soldiers in the world wars who got away with treasure. Obviously, looting was rampant throughout the war but I was looking for a soldier who basically won the lottery because of something he found during the war.

Is it a letter (if they can read)? Do they just realize I’m dead when I don’t come home for years? Does a friend from the town tell my family when they return?
