I'm writing a story taking place in the Jazz Era, also looking for context from earlier in time for a deeper understanding. I'm uncertain how my characters may have acquired their musical instruments, especially as working class citizens. On the other hand, I know for certain that most jazz musicians of the era had very little money. Did they get them from music stores? How much might they have cost? Specifically wondering about sax, oboe and upright bass. Also piano--for pianists, which couldn't really transport an instrument, did they just use what was in their venues? What were the struggles in wanting/not actually owning one or vice versa? How common were pianos in said venues, esp. speakeasies? Any further reading on this and related topics would be much appreciated, I want to have as much depth in my research as I can.

I've been looking at olpe paintings and noticed on some, some characters would be entirely white and some entirely black. Why would this be? the specific one I was looking at was one with Poseidon and Hermes being Black, and Athena being entirely white.

From my understanding the Vandals have been all over Europe basically tbh Europe is one of the most racially mixed places in my view back in the old world times the most mixed places now racially in modern times is places like Brazil, Latin America basically all of the America’s. But in old world times Europe was the most mixed to me especially Italy and Spain that have had North African, Arabic, and European invasions that have left there mark?

If you look at the ancient Celts or British, they had chariots and “navies” (not anything close to what we’d think of in the last 200-300 years, but they were seafaring.) I know there were regional differences between tribes so was there a tribe like the Algonquins or someone else who tried to explore?

So I recently discovered a lot of what I learned about Columbus in school was a complete lie. There are a lot of lies circulating about him in popular media as well. I figure the best way to learn what's true and what isn't, is to get the info from the horse's mouth i.e. Columbus' Journals.

So, I'm here to ask you fine people: Have any of you read Columbus' journals and if so, what translation? I really want to pick a translation that is reliable and has footnotes where the Spanish/Italian (not sure which he wrote in) to English is ambiguous. The myth of the “Clean Wehrmacht” (I.e. the claim that only the Waffen SS engaged in the various War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity that Nazi Germany is known for, whereas the Heer, Luftwaffe, and Kriegsmarine were innocent and somehow unaware of things like the Holocaust and forced prostitution), and its various derivatives (such as the insistence that they were only forced into committing the above by officers/the SS, or that Nazi Indoctrination meant they weren’t responsible for Crimes they committed) of course first appeared in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, but in recent years it seems to have become more and more widespread. Whenever the Wehrmacht is discussed on Reddit (NB: this is just my subjective observation, and is by no means an objective statement) and other social media sites, it seems like the supposed innocence of the Wehrmacht is brought up. The thing that really struck me personally is that it seems to be prevalent amongst people who seemingly have no obvious Nazi sympathies- you would expect it would be fairly common amongst Neo-Nazis and the like, but more and more I’m (again, personally) encountering people who appear to have been taught or otherwise convinced that only the SS committed war crimes during the Second World War. So, is there any consensus amongst historians as to why this myth has persisted? Now that the majority of Wehrmacht survivors have passed away, who has reason to spread this idea?

It's quite clear that Denmark was the main power of the two, since the union was run from Copenhagen and that the monarch was the Danish king. So I wondered if other European powers just referred to the Union as "Denmark" or as Denmark-Norway. It seems to be about 50/50 between sources if they refer to it as "Denmark-Norway" or just "Denmark" I got somewhat curios and wanted to know if someone here had an answer to my question.

Im in the final bits of highschool right now and im currently planning out my future. History is a big passion of mine, though i hear bad things regarding getting a job with your masters degree. Im planning to use my masters degree in history to work as a librarian in a nice big library , or to work as an archivist. Should i stop and rethink before i get in to deep? or is this a good idea to keep going with? Would love to hear from people who possibly have already been thru the process and have some advice for me, if not i'd still love to hear your guy's opinions. Cheers!

So I’ve been doing some research for a project I have planned about history and it requires me to figure out why the Seljuk Turks converted to Islam for an important part of it. What I’ve been able to find so far, has only said that Seljuk Beig converted to Islam, and does not expand on it further. And so I was wondering if it is known why Seljuk Beig converted.

I am aware of something called the “Great Stirrup Controversy” where historians had many different theories on the extent of the impact that stirrups had. Some go as far as to say it played an important role in creating Feudalism. Is this true? How has criticism of this theory changed over time and are there any new insights? Thank you in advance!

I'm interested to know, especially from first hand experience if available, in terms of mobility of the arms and legs, which armor "type" (I'm sorry I'm not a historian or history buff so I'm not aware of the proper terms.) would limit range of motion less; so called "scale mail" which I'm told wasn't real but I digress, or a more plate or lorica segmantata type?

For the curious, my reason for being curious about this is pretty dumb I'm aware, but I basically want to make some protection that would require me to wear it around for a long time and run with it quite a bit as well as move my arms relatively unhindered. I'm throwing around ideas of either using cardboard for cheap and easily replaceable, or maybe even fabric sewn in to segments of some sort, I'm aware that a gambeson or "padded armor" would basically achieve this if I went with the latter.

Someone I know is adamantly stating that CVs had a spare complement of planes that weren’t attached to any air wings. As far as i know this is false.
