Why didn't Spain turn over the Canary islands to Portugal, considering they were in the 'Portuguese half of the world' after the treaties Tordesillas and Zaragoza?

Did Portugal just not see them as being important because they already possessed Cabo Verde?

There's a lot of people putting a lot of effort into some great public history on this sub. I'm a mathematician, and I'm not entirely sure how this process works in other fields or outside of academia, but I assume that at least some departments really do mean service to the general public/community outreach is valued. I am about to graduate from high school in a few months i have been wanting to study history. History is a subject that i am passionate about but i dont know if it is worth studying in college. If i did study it, i would get a minor. I dont know if i should just learn through books and the internet by my own rather than in university since i dont know what jobs i could get with a minor/mayor in history.

Public education in the US took a fair while to get to the point where most adults could be assumed to have attended, much less graduated, high school. Where did these aspects of American school culture come from? Were they borrowing off of universities, or British schools?

Why was Ethiopia never colonized? Was it a force to be reckoned with in the early days? Italy tried before and got rooted out at the battle of Adwa in 1896. Did this impress other nations as such? Was there no interest? Or was it just the timeframe: other countries had other priorities at the time?
