Why do we always envision the Gauls of antiquity with big Bismarckian-like moustaches?

Looking for information about this poster.

My great-grandfather served in WW1 but at the very end (induction in early 1918). At some point between his induction and his death he was given this poster. There is only his name, induction date, where he was inducted and his branch information. Looking on the front I don't see any information about who created the document so there's no real hope there.

Obviously in 1918/1919 the war wasn't called a World War and the typical name was The Great War, but I don't know if this term came into use before WW2 although it seems that it would have since it doesn't describe it as a first World War, just "World War".

What do you guys know about it?

How come we never hear about Japanese concentration camps?

I recently discovered that at the time of world war 2 The US incarcerated and relocated about 110,000 Japanese people. How come we hear a lot about other concentration camps from all over the world. Even if they are not worse. But not about this one?

Did Native Americans in North Ameruca have systems of counting? Clearly they had systems of counting, but how far up did they go?

I'm aware that Mesoamericans had complex math and arithmetic, but what about modern day US and Canadian land? Did natives here have words that described numbers higher than 1,000? 1,000,000? Did they have the concept of numerical infinity?

Why did San Francisco, not Oakland, become the dominant city in the Bay Area?

San Francisco is basically an island; it's surrounded on three sides by water and most of the land border in the south is dominated by the San Bruno Mountain. Oakland has better transportation connections and has much more room to expand. Most shipping traffic now goes to Oakland. And frankly, the weather is better and less foggy in Oakland too. One would think that after SF was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake, Oakland would be a logical place to rebuild. However, since then, SF has been further entrenched by the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridge, and the Transbay Tube. Why has SF remained the center of the Bay Area despite its awkward location?

Are there any examples of trench warfare between the American Civil War and WWI?

I'm not aware of any other examples of this kind of warfare, but always wondered why there are no other examples in this time period. Are there examples to be found on the Balkan like the crimean war 1853.56? If not, then why not? Were these theatres of war simply never total wars?

Why was European colonization of the New World so much more successful than the colonization of Africa?

I had always thought it was just due to generally harder conditions in Africa, but I recently watch a doc talking about the extreme conditions settlers faced in North and South America. So why wasn't colonization in Africa more successful, especially as it is "right next door" compared to the Americas.

Did Vikings sacrifice captives/enemies to gods and deities like the fire giant Sutr?

Asking this because this came up in a video game I was playing, where a character was telling a story of how he had seen enemies burned as an offering to Sutr, the fire giant. The game is Senua's sacrifice.

Did these sacrifices happen to appease the gods?

What is the Rule of Temple

While doing research for a medieval paper, I came across a museum website dealing with chain mail and I found a very interesting piece of information titled the "Rule of Temple." I've done extensive searching and simply cannot find what it is, or any primary source on it.

" In fact, a knight’s advantage fighting alongside his more poorly armored sergeants and infantry was acknowledged in the Rule of Temple, which allowed those without mail to withdraw from battle if injured while not permitting those with mail to do the same. "

I was wondering if this was an actual thing, and if so, where could I find a primary source dealing with this "Rule of Temple."

What is the original source claiming that Diogenes quipped back at Plato about "emptiness" in his head?

The story is usually told like this:

Plato presented a theory of ideas, saying that there were many different cups in this world but only one idea of a cup, a "cupness" that comes before the existence of cups. Diogenes said, "I can see cups on the table, but I can't see the cupness." Plato replied, "that's because you have the eyes to see the cup, but not the intellect to see the cupness."

Diogenes picked up a cup and said, "Is it empty? Where is the 'emptiness' which precedes this empty cup?" He reached over and tapped Plato's head, saying "I think what you will find here is the emptiness."

It's pretty hilarious and several people have posted it. But where does it come from?

Well, the first half is from Diogenes Laërtius, Lives of the Eminent Philosophers, Book VI, chapter 53:

As Plato was conversing about Ideas and using the nouns "tablehood" and "cuphood," he said, "Table and cup I see; but your tablehood and cuphood, Plato, I can nowise see." "That's readily accounted for," said Plato, "for you have the eyes to see the visible table and cup; but not the understanding by which ideal tablehood and cuphood are discerned."
(source)

But there's nothing here about Diogenes' riposte about emptiness.

I couldn't find any other historical source. I tried sorting my Google results by date and the oldest ones are these three (all of them dated Feb 1, 2001 although I doubt they were all posted on the same day; it must be the day they were indexed by Google or something). I can't open the PDF file and the other two don't list a source, either; they consist of anecdotes of which some are also from Laërtius, but others seem suspicious.

So is it fake? If so, I find it fascinating (given the unreliability of even ancient sources about Diogenes) that people would come up rumors and legends about this man even in the modern age.

Hoax or not, if someone here has the original source of that particular anecdote about emptiness, I would really appreciate it.

How were Jewish prisoners of war treated by Nazi Germany?

Specifically I'm talking about the western powers here. Russians were generally considered to be untermenschen, and my assumption is that the jews serving in the russian army would have been treated poorly. (If I'm wrong, by any means correct me). However, US and British troops, I've been led to believe, were treated much better. But what about Jewish individuals in those POW's? Were they treated worse than other POWs?

Did ancient civilizations that are often viewed as having a singular architectural styles have design movements like we see in modern times?

If I lived in, say, ancient Rome, would there have been architectural movements akin to what was seen in the 21st century with art deco, brutalism, Bauhaus or deconstructivism?

Or was ancient Roman (or Greek or Egyptian or whatever civilization you please) architecture simply "Roman architecture"?

History of women involvement in NATO countries during the Cold war

Hello fellow historians!

I'm doing a college presentation about history of women involvement in NATO countries during the Cold war in the military and civilian sectors. Yes, the topic is as broad as it sounds and unfortunately I'm having some difficulty finding the necessary information and sources. It's also worth mentioning that NATO allied countries and countries that were not aligned with the Soviet/Eastern Bloc can also be mentioned (ex. Israel). Basically, anything that involved women (any programs, milestones, achievements,...) in NATO countries during the Cold War.

Thanks in advance to anyone who knows anything about the topic and is willing to share that information with me. Also, since I'm asking for help with such a broad topic, feel free to ask me anything in the comments.

Pornography and its role in the lives of early human civilizations.

How did people in the early and Middle Ages access/consume pornography? Was there such a thing as porn theater for the rich? I’ll be banned for this, but I simply must know! Thanks.
