I’ve heard this story before, but it seemed to be more of a threat to the pope than something he actually considered. Also, what were the origins of his conflict with the papacy?

I just watched a sci-fi movie that mentioned a 28th amendment to the U.S. constitution granting clones a right to life. That made me look up the current amendments, and I was surprised to find out one was ratified when I was 16, in 1992. I have no memory at all of this being mentioned in the news, and I believe I watched the news every day in high school. Was the 27th Amendment passed quietly, or was there any controversy at all? It's hard for me to imagine a constitutional amendment being passed in any modern Congress.

NATO stands for the "North Atlantic Treaty Organization" and it consists of countries that are generally in the same latitude as the USA and around the broader area of the north Atlantic ocean. Did the geographical element in the name of the alliance (North Atlantic) ever created an issue, when countries that were allied to the USA but did not meet the geographical criteria wanted to join NATO? For example, Australia, Brazil or Japan. If that is the case, was there ever an attempt to change the name and rebrand the alliance into a more global military organization?

What are some instances when some individuals used costumes/ animal parts to make themselves look like monsters?
Or at least, instances where some people will make other people believing in those creatures?
Like, some people would claim they saw dragons, but they saw only some poor, but bigger lizards?

Not gonna lie, this book was mainly an impulse buy as it was a very old copy from a beautiful lowkey library run by an old man. I was interested in it’s telling of Nazi history based on the few pages I read, especially since it cited a lot of hitler’s speeches and works. However, I just learned that this book is quite unreliable with certain parts when the author starts his own commentary on history.
The main question is, what parts can I read and store it in my head as reliable information about the rise of the Nazis, and what should I read with a grain of salt? why are these parts not accurate historical work?
Additional question- what’s the value of reading books like these?
I especially don’t care about his apparent obsession with homosexuality among the Nazis (I’m assuming he was homophobic?), so I wanted to know how to read this book since people said it is still a valuable piece of literature to read despite its flaws.

Old footage of horse and carriages looks manic but organised, we're there road rules to follow? Or licenses and tests needed to use the roads? What about accidents and insurance? What was the system? Or was it just a free for all?

I've seen people placing them in either of these categories.

I admit I am asking because people have been talking about this in regards to the "assimilation" mechanics in the upcoming Victoria 3. I don't know much of anything about it, and was curious to learn. It sounds like a true attempt at genocide (reminds me of the Native American boarding schools' style of cultural genocide) but I'm not sure if that's generally how it's thought of.

I've heard about men like Pompey Magnus and Julius Caesar being "Generals", but I've never read anything else about the rank. Every source I have read about the Roman military rank and structure says that the Legate is the head of the legion and the highest rank in the Roman army. Is a general a statesman or senator that takes control of multiple legions? Or is it an entirely separate position? Does the legate serve as an advisor to the general, or can a single legate control more than one legion? Thanks.

He's a great musician, the interpretation of the viking age on his music is really awesome, but how historically accurate is it? Is there any record of how music was in the viking age (and before) and in that case, how much does Einar draws from it?

I am looking for books that give a general history of social welfare programs in the United States, from the pre-FDR poorhouses to the Affordable Care Act. If such books don't exist, then a history of U.S. social welfare from FDR to Bill Clinton would suffice.

Hi again, r/AskHistorians.
I'm going to be moving to Korea soon and know only the most general things about Korean history. My carry-on is already jam-packed with books and I probably only have space for one book on Korean history to help me better understand the culture of the world I'll be living in; can you please recommend for me one dilettante-friendly title?
I don't have any firm ideas about what the scope of the work should be---I suppose anything that gives a comprehensive, functional idea of the country as a whole and its origins and how it came to be . . . well, how it is presently.

I'm thinking about people like Juan Carlos II, the Former King of Bhutan, Yahya Jammeh, I guess maybe Gorbachev's policy of glasnost, etc - dictators who aren't facing large-scale demonstrations at home or heavy pressure from foreign governments to reform or relinquish power, but choose to do so anyway.

Whenever most people now imagine angels, they most likely picture a kind looking, humanoid angel with wings on the back not the terrifying abominations that are said to be biblically accurate. Why is that?

More specifically, were the monks of Lindisfarne aware of their existence, or were the attackers completely unknown and alien? The same question goes for the Viking’s mini excursion into Wessex in 789 and how it effected the local community there.
All I can find online is that this raid was the beginning of the ‘Viking Age’, but nothing to suggests activity, trade or other contact before this date. It seems improbable to me that there wouldn’t be any knowledge of them, especially considering the existing networks of trade, religion and communication at this time.
Conversely, how much knowledge did the Vikings and the wider Scandinavian peoples have of Europe? They must’ve known where Lindisfarne was and the wealth held there in advance. Did they have maps of the English coast/wider Europe?
Thank you in advance.

I've finished up with my AP World History course, and it's become pretty interesting to learn about. Especially analyzing history with a far more complex lense than x event happened, and y event happened, and z event happened...
Any resources to explore after this? I have a pretty general overview of events in world history, but where should I go to read about it in more depth? And please, nothing extremely intimidating. I'm merely a humble high school student.

Hi all! I’m writing a novel set in the mid 30s with one main character who is born in St. Louis and wondering what kind of accent you wound see during this time. Would it sound more southern or distinctly something else? The character I’m writing for would be younger (so born around 1917) and upper-middle class.

Were dating systems in the ancient world really based on the reigns of Emperors (e.g. in the 15th year of Tiberius' reign)?

I have been told Brazil joined WW2 after, allegedly, the Nazis sunk a ship near Rio de Janeiro. As far as I know, Brazil had decided to stay neutral in the war and then-president Getúlio Vargas was actually friendly towards Hitler, so if the country did join the war, they'd have joined it on the Nazis' side. So why would Hitler attack the country? Didn't he have better things to do?
I've heard that, actually, the US were the ones who sunk the ship, they just blamed it on the Nazis so Brazil wouldn't aid the Nazis and would instead help the Allies (which's exactly what happened). This makes the most logical sense to me, but considering that's not the 'official' story, surely there is a good reason for why Hitler would give that order...

Most likely this has been asked before, so please forgive and redirect me. Aside from the Gospels, what does the world offer up that there was a man named Jesus, who was from Nazareth, who was believed IN HIS TIME to be the Christ and was executed by order of the Prefect Pontious Pilate?

How does [*damnatio memoriae*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damnatio_memoriae) impact what we know from the historical record, and how confident we can be of what we "know"?
For example, how reliable are the reports on Caligula, Nero, and Domitian given their subsequent damnation?
