I may be mistaken but English archery seems to go above and beyond what would be needed for hunting. If that was standard hunting practice, wouldn't other continental Europeans have longbows too?

Hi not sure if this sub is the right one to ask this, but I've recently become interested in gnosticism and hermeticism and the like, and am struggling to find a good book about hermeticism - any recommendations appreciated!

I had asked a relevant question about colonists of Lost Colony
Please suggest reference books that can throw light on brief background information, motivation and selection process of people who were selected for being colonists in North America in the hundred year period around year 1580.

It may happen from time to time that a serious historian (read: flaired users) does not have time to answer a question in full according to subreddit guidelines. In such case, they may simply not comment on the thread.
But the OP wants answers, wouldn't it be better if these experts can tell which books/resources can answer the question? Then, at least the OP knows from where to get the answers and they can do their own research according to the pointers given by experts. Some knowledgable pointers are better than no answer.
May be this kind of reference works can be suggested under a special comment starting with "Suggested References" (similar to "Off-Topic Discussion" comment on every r/WritingPrompts thread)
If there are concerns about who can post such reference suggestions, it can be restricted to flaired users - or users who have at-least 2 answers on the sub.
It's a win-win for both OP and future readers. What do you think?

I've heard the Gallic sack of Rome mentioned numerous times, but it's always just breezed over like it's no big deal. I have a difficult time understanding how Rome managed to come back from it. Did they just kick the Barbarians out and rebuild the city? Did the Gauls just leave them alone? I would think being sacked would pretty much be the end for Rome, but about 70 years later, they were giving Carthage the business and pretty much dominating Italy and the surrounding regions if my understanding is accurate. What happened following the Gallic sack of Rome that allowed Rome to remain a dominant force in the Mediterranean a little over 50 years later?

I've been reading old newspapers about a small town near me. Between various articles and publications I am getting a picture in my head of communist Finnish lumber jacks teaming up with moonshiners backed by organized crime in open battle with deputized klansman and lumber barons working with the FBI. Sorry that was a huge run on sentence.

Back in college, I was taught that the novel emerged in Europe sometime in the 17-18th century (don't remember the exact date) and I was wondering how accurate this might be? Did other parts of the world or other time periods have literature that we might recognize as a novel?

I am increasingly aware of scientific advances that were made in the Islamic world, many of which were discoveries that were made by Greek and Roman scholars that were then built upon and advanced by Islamic scholars (like algebra, geometry, for example) and then subsequently adopted by the Western world. Then, due to concepts like Orientalism and antithetical relationships between the West and the Islamic world, were appropriated by the West but the Muslim scholars were not given credit for them.
My question is whether there are similar connections to Western political theory and Islamic ways of thinking, which have then been adopted but not acknowledged to be connected to the Islamic world?

I am beginning on a research essay comparing the governmental and administrative structures of the German Empire and the Holy Roman Empire. I tried a few searches online, but could not come up with much. Suggestions for this topic are greatly appreciated! Thanks! (Also any book suggestions on German unity and Bismarck are appreciated as well because it's one of my favourite periods in history!)

I'm my family's historian and I've recently done extensive research with my family's origins in the Ukraine, gathering metrical records. I have a decent grasp of the Latin in the documents, but I'm a little unfamiliar with the column headings and some words in the text for the entries.
Would someone be able to help me with a few entries to get me started so I can use it as a template to begin translating my batch of records?
Thank you in advance!

I just don’t get how it became a thing, and why they do it. I get it’s to give you a deeper understanding, but most other countries don’t do this.
How did it began?

So, I've been reading about the history of the Haredi exceptions to the draft for the IDF, and how much it's expanded over the years. I understand the anger about unequal treatment coming from Israelis who are subject to the draft, but to what degree does the 'Status Quo' exception have an effect on military readiness? Did it ever? Were Haganah/early IDF leaders angry about the potential loss of recruits?
Further sources on this would be great, too.

I was reading Evans' introduction to Society and Politics in Wilhemine Germany and he states that the Reichstag lacked legislative initiative. Yet, Margaret Anderson noted in Practicing Democracy that the Reichstag did have legislative initiative.
Why is this a debate? Did the Reichstag have legislative initiative or did it not?

Did the Native American tribes on the East Coast know that Europe and Europeans existed by the 1600s? I ask this because I wonder if they had a lot of contact with the Aztecs in Mexico or Inca in Peru (A stretch to be sure) who obviously knew of the Spanish and by enlarge Europe. Can anyone answer this?

Everyone is always so in awe of Hannibal because he crossed the Alps with an entire army, but to my naive eyes that seems not very interesting. You pick a pass and walk through it. So what was so difficult about traversing the Alps?
