Would you get aid if dad died in WW2?

I'm working on a story of two sisters, 14 and 19, who live in 1958. The 19 year old has custody of the 14 year old. Their parents are both deceased; mom died in childbirth and dad died at Normandy. Their grandmother got custody of them but she too died about a year before the story takes place.

My question is, what financial benfits would they recieve? Social Security? And if they got compensation for their dad's death as a serviceman, would it be a monthly payment or one time check?

I'm trying to make sure their financial status is historically accurate. They live in a rural area and need to be poor for the storyline, so any info that might help would be greatly appreciated.

What is the origin of this quote from Goethe?

As far as I can tell, it first appears in Margaret Fuller's [article "The Great Lawsuit,"] (https://books.google.com/books?id=IvGdfNd9EHMC&pg=PA40&dq=excellent+woman+husband+dies+goethe&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjngbWGmabZAhXDl-AKHS0hAMEQ6AEIRDAF#v=onepage&q=excellent%20woman&f=false) from The Dial in 1844.

"The excellent woman is she, who, if the husband dies, can be a father to the children."

Is this a spurious quote? From the context of Fuller's article, it seems to have been a letter, but I am not sure. I'd like to find an original source to it.

Thank you!

Why didn't the French make super thick long and wide shields to stop the English Longbow from piercing their metal armour?

I always see pictures of french knights no holding a shield and 30 English arrows smashing through its armour. But why didnt the french use massive shields like the Romans did etc. Im sure you could make them thick enough to stop an arrow.

Why did the black death produce pogroms?

In a opinion piece in the Times, Daniel Finkelstein writes about why there were accusations of antisemitism in a front article of the daily telegraph about George Soros funding a anti brexit campaign. As an example of fictitious Jewish conspiracies fueling antisemitism he writes that the black death lead to pogroms against Jewish people because communities believed they caused the black death.

Where and when did the blaming start and did further outbreaks lead to more pogroms?

I recently heard somewhere- I can't remember where, unfortunately- that feudalism, as we commonly think of it, didn't actually exist. Is this true?

Any of you know if the programs for nuclear weapons research and production in the USSR had coerced foreign/imprisoned scientists into research?

I've found many resources documenting the use of POWs and ethnic minorities in the development of uranium and atomic gulags but is there proof that any prisoners were assigned to the actual research and engineering of nuclear weapons in the USSR?

When did French become considered classy?

My understanding is that most of the romance languages were considered vulgar languages, and that scholarly men and elites spoke and wrote in Latin and Greek. For example Newton's Principia was written in Latin, which was customary at the time. By the 19th century, "pardon my French" becomes a phrase, indicating its used to put on airs and show off class.

I am curious to know if there were slave fights in American history. I was thinking that something like that may have occurred at the time.

Daily Life For soldiers in the Great War

What was the daily routine for soldiers (Mainly basic Infantry like privates) on the eastern front and on other fronts other than the western front?

I am a 17 year old German man in december 1942 turning 18 in a few weeks. im skeptical of the war and after hearing about the horrible eastern front my only goal is increasing my own chances of survival any way i can. What are some steps i should take and consider to increase my chances?

Some framework for the question.

  1. Surrendering to the western allies is a good outcome if possible, but only if an opportunity arises.

  2. i dont have any special skills, but im willing to learn or lie if doing so means being assigned to something/somewhere less dangerous.

order of priority

  1. survive

  2. Not serve on the eastern front

What happened to the Mycenaeans?

We are studying Ancient Greece in my history class, as a precursor my professor touched on the Mycenaeans who inhabited the area from around 1600-1100 BCE. He said that around 1100 BCE that “the lights went off” and they all but disappeared. Abandoning their civilizations.

Is this true? Is there more information on them? Was there some kind of plague?

Thanks, A curious student

Native populations were especially vulnerable to Western-brought diseases and pathogens, why were local diseases less harmful to Europeans?

Is it due to European trends of living in highly concentrated communities and therefore having developed immunity? Or were there significant differences in the detrimental effects of prevailing 'germs' (for my lack of terminology in the field) in Europe and Central America e.g.?

Short Answers to Simple Questions | February 14, 2018

Previous weeks!

Please Be Aware: We expect everyone to read the rules and guidelines of this thread. Mods will remove questions which we deem to be too involved for the theme in place here. We will remove answers which don't include a source. These removals will be without notice. Please follow the rules.

Some questions people have just don't require depth. This thread is a recurring feature intended to provide a space for those simple, straight forward questions that are otherwise unsuited for the format of the subreddit.

Here are the ground rules:

  • Top Level Posts should be questions in their own right.

  • Questions should be clear and specific in the information that they are asking for.

  • Questions which ask about broader concepts may be removed at the discretion of the Mod Team and redirected to post as a standalone question.

  • We realize that in some cases, users may pose questions that they don't realize are more complicated than they think. In these cases, we will suggest reposting as a stand-alone question.

  • Answers MUST be properly sourced to respectable literature. Unlike regular questions in the sub where sources are only required upon request, the lack of a source will result in removal of the answer.

  • Academic secondary sources are prefered. Tertiary sources are acceptable if they are of academic rigor (such as a book from the 'Oxford Companion' series, or a reference work from an academic press).

  • The only rule being relaxed here is with regard to depth, insofar as the anticipated questions are ones which do not require it. All other rules of the subreddit are in force.

What did the Maginot Line look like to the international community during the interwar period? Sources appreciated

I want to learn and hopefully write on the Maginot Line and it's effect on French diplomacy. Most important are sources I can access, but any information is welcome as to what people thought of it internationally.

How did the Portuguese rule and structure their trading posts in Africa and India during the age of exploration and how much autonomy did these trade posts have?

Being so far from home in 15th and 16th century must have made getting orders a very laborious process. In addition Portugual was not a land power so how did they efectively rule their holdings to create such an extensive trade network?
