The storytelling motif of an ordinary, schlubby guy run around in circles by an extraordinary woman (see sitcoms) dates to the '30s screwball comedies at least; was it new then? Was it a reaction to modernism, to the Great Depression, or something else? Was it distinctly American?

to clarify, perhaps "befuddled" and "emasculated" would be more precise than "schlubby"

What would 10,000 calories a day diet look like for a person living in the British Isles during the late Middle Ages?

I'm trying to understand what such a diet would look like for a person living in Fereldan which is basically fantasy England. I would like some help on this because the Templar's seem to require a similar of not greater amount of food then normal knights.

Did Vasari paint over some Rafael’s work in the Vatican?

I heard an interview with an Italian official regarding removing the overpaint to restore Rafael’s frescoes. The reason why it is not done was given, to paraphrase, that ‘Vasari is not Rafael, but Vasari is Vasari!’ . Is there it true that Vasari painted over Rafael’s work, and if it is, which fresco was referred to ?

According to my family's lore, the Czech portion of my family left Austria-Hungary during the 1860s/1870s due to tensions with the Germans. Is there any truth to these claims?

So, according to my father, it has been claimed by his family that they left what is now the Czech Republic because of tensions with Germans.

Would these tensions have been with the Austrian portion of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (as opposed to Germans from the north)? What were these tensions? How were they manifested? Could it have been both? I have to find the genealogical records, but we know that they left in 1869 through Bremen, and landed in Galveston, Texas. The other portion of that side of my family left roughly a decade later.

Graduate programs for Maya history/archaeology

I'm a junior majoring in anthropology, and I'm really interested in pursuing a PhD in Maya archaeology, especially Maya epigraphy. This spring I've started working on a senior thesis about Maya marriage alliances.

So far I have Tulane and UT Austin on my list of places with good Maya offerings. Are there other graduate programs in the US that are particularly good for Maya studies?

Looking for a relative (American air technician in the Philippines)

Hello, historians

I am trying to track down the history of a relative, and I've hit a dead end. It is known that he lived in the United States between roughly 1905 and 1925. He worked at a factory making engines for DH-4 aircraft in New York and then served as a technician in the American air force in the Philippines. I have his name, but it's more than likely that he anglicized it upon moving to the US, so it's not that much help.

As far as I can see it, my two paths from here are to find out which factory made DH-4 engines in New York at the time, and hope that they have records from that era and to look through lists of US air force technicians in the Philippines. I'd be grateful if someone could at least tell me what units were stationed there.

Any other help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

When was the earliest humanity considered time travel?

I can discuss the concept of time travel with most people because time travel, as a concept, is extremely well established. If I traveled back in time, how far back would I have to go to find people that would have no concept of time-travel? Did people talk about time travel as early as the America Civil War? As early as the rise of Islam? As early as Egypt's new kingdom?

The Western Roman Empire's fall has been the subject of theory crafting since Gibbons and in his work Christianity is one of the factors he and others point to. Is there any real evidence that supports this?

It always seemed weird to me that some left Christianity with the bill when the church was a stabilizing factor for seemingly every civilization in Europe following Rome. Even in the Byzantine Empire the church was a tool used by Justinian and every emperor thereafter to solidify his reign. Are there other factors I'm not thinking about that makes the situation in the Western Empire differ from the East in regards to Christianity or is the church's fault in the fall of the empire simply gaslighting from different agendas through out history?

P.S. I was also always curious, why does the fall of Rome intrigue so many people. (I'm aware that question is subjective but I'm interested in ideas.)

Info about German Troops on Motorcycles in WWII

I've encountered a quote in a primary document, which describes a German on a motorcycle. I want to understand who might have been riding around on a motorcycle in a German-occupied city in the Soviet Union during WWII. Would any ordinary German soldier have had access to one? Would any SS troop? Does anyone know if members of the Einsatzgruppen (mobile killing squads) had access to motorcycles? Any info would be helpful for piecing together the story I'm trying to understand. Thanks!

Dan Carlin claims that Chinese used crossbows in ancient times, is this true?

In his extra episode Thor's Angels, Dan says the Chinese had crossbows since ancient times, he doesn't clarify when exactly in ancient times, but I do believe he is referring to the time of the Romans, so my questions is, are there any records of this? Was it effective? Why was this not adopted by the Romans?

I'm ashamed to say I know very little of World War 2. I want to learn. Where should I start?

I really want to dive into learning as much as I can about World War 2, and hopefully this interest will later spark me to learn more about the rest of the 20th century.

Where do I begin? I don't want anything to comprehensive that I'll immediately lose motivation. I kind of need something which gives me a short summary to start out with, giving me the building blocks and motivation to delve further. Documentaries/short YouTube videos/short books for dummies etc. are all welcome

Look forward to your response!

Were the defenses of the Maginot line any better than the fortifications around Liege at the start of WWI?

The fortresses around Liege at the start of WWI were supposedly state-of-the-art at the time, but were quickly destroyed as soon as heavy artillery was brought in. Superficially, the descriptions of the two fortifications sound similar. Did the Maginot line represent a dramatic improvement over the kind of fortifications around Liege? Or could a week of heavy artillery bombardment have neutralized the Maginot line as well?

Why do Spain and Armenia have such low Muslim populations?

I was looking at Islam in Europe's wiki page and it lists Armenia as having less than 1% Muslims and Spain as having 2-4%.

I would have thought they would have much more; Spain was once ruled by the Islamic Moors and is relatively close to Islamic North Africa.

Armenia's neighbors have extremely high Islamic populations (Azerbaijan has a population of 90-100% Muslims), so why does it have such a low population of Muslims?
