The scene with Renly Baratheon after his wedding in Game of Thrones made me wonder - back in the day, how did gay guys do the deed with a woman if they weren't physically attracted to them if they needed to continue a royal line or whatever?

I have some questions about ancient Rome and the Roman Empire
When people refer to "Caesar" Who are they refering to? Augustus or Julius? Which one was the better leader?
The Romans were fascinating and I dont know how I've never wanted to learn about them. I am really interested now :D

I imagine wearing armor and swinging weapons would have led to a lot of injuries on their own. Did any of the old warriors have a warm up they did to solve those issues?

What is the origin of the term? How did such a negative thing turn into an expression which means good luck.

Like the title asks, what decides which house the next monarch is to be a part of? This is something that's always confused me about the British monarchy. Thanks!

I know that Gual and Brittania (was that the Roman name?) were heavily romanized and so it would have been easy to launch an expedition. I know they couldn't travel much into modern day Germany due to the hostile tribes, but couldn't they have sailed eastward, along the coast, bringing them to the Jutland peninsula? If so, did they go around Jutland and discorer Scandinavia?

The Constituent Assembly abolished noble titles in 1790, and later on Napoleon created new ones for his empire, but were the Old Regime noble titles ever restored under a later regime, perhaps during the Restoration? If so, how long did they last?

I mean it's probably one of the trademark stereotypes of the era, alongside the class separation and invention boom. It's my favourite time period for the latter reason but I was just curious as to where this prudishness came from? Did it stretch across all classes or was it just the nobility/high classes (as is per usual with that lot in history)?

Today:
Saturday Reading and Research will focus on exactly that: the history you have been reading this week and the research you've been working on. It's also the prime thread for requesting books on a particular subject. As with all our weekly features, this thread will be lightly moderated.
So, encountered a recent biography of Stalin that revealed all about his addiction to ragtime piano? Delved into a horrendous piece of presentist and sexist psycho-evolutionary mumbo-jumbo and want to tell us about how bad it was? Need help finding the right book to give the historian in your family? Then this is the thread for you!

In disparate articles I've seen, I read about ritual sacrifices of thousands or even tens of thousands of people during public festivals several times per year, including sacrifice of virgins and children, who are unlikely to be battle captives. How did the Aztecs decide who got the axe? Was it random? Or did they just maraud the countryside rounding up entire communities at a time?

Was there much if any social mobility? How do you compete with literal slave labour? Was there any advantage to hiring a “free” person over a slave? What was wage competition like?

I have started doing a historical project on automobiles - mainly relating to automobiles in the United Kingdom, U.S. and Canada from German and Japanese manufacturers and things relating to vehicle history, marketing, MSRPs etc.
The scope of the project is:
Marketing and advertisement of the vehicles.
Cultural impact of vehicles [for example the Volkswagen Golf GTI modification scene, Volkswagen Transporter T5 modified car scene, Japanese car modifications for Toyota/Subaru etc.]
Political issues involving automobile manufacturers.
The period I am covering is from 1979 to 2010 - from the 1970s up to the middle of the 2007-2012 Recession.
This is my first major project [it's for a website] but before I start, my questions are:
How can I obtain a copy of a primary or secondary source legally?
What are the best methods to assess a source for reliability using the Who, what, where, when, why criteria?
Would my research count as a primary source [due to being original research], a secondary source, or because it's a website, a tertiary source?
What do I need to know when dealing with primary sources and are there any legal considerations to take into account?
I am from Wigan/Billinge, United Kingdom if location is a factor here.
If any historian could advise me on this I would gladly appreciate it.

America occupies parts of the Middle - east and after ten years becomes the most reviled and hated nation for those peoples. But the Brits stuck around for centuries and nothing like that hatred is ever seen in the former colonies. What gives?

I ask because in Andrei Tarkovsky's The Mirror there's what appears to be documentary footage of men (East Asian-looking, for what it's worth) waving Mao's Little Red Book, while being restrained by (white-looking) Soviet soldiers or possibly policemen. I was wondering if anyone had any insight into what this might be about.

Were they able to avoid complying with discriminatory laws and customs because of their wealth and power, or were they subjected to the same treatment? Why were they exempted/not exempted? I am mainly interested in the post WWII period.

Today military R&D is handled by corporations intent on landing a contract with the the federal government, for the most part. How were advancements in weaponry, transportation, and provisions funded and developed in medieval or ancient times?
