whenever people talk about world war II they always think about Hitler, Germany, japan's attack on pearl harbor and the atomic bombs but rarely do you hear someone talk about Italy's role in all of this

Hi, I'm readding as you might guess "The Gallic Wars" and I've search for a map of the regions but the regions maps don't have the Helvetii or the roman provinces, and doesn't have the rivers to figure out the regions for my own and when looking for maps with rivers they have a lot of rivers wich make hard to find the regions. So if you knew of a good map I'd be very thankful =).

Before Arnold and modern body building, was there anyone comparable? That is, if you took Arnold back in time and put him in a Roman gladiator arena, would other gladiators be comparable?

Slavery must have been reasonably popular long ago (1700s) and is very unpopular now, so how fast was this movement? The South did fight a war to keep it, so when did it lose popularity there?
When did slavery become a minority opinion in the US?
How long after the civil was did Slavery become unpopular in the South?

In the movie, the colonel is viciously cruel. He executes wounded patriots after their surrender, kills innocent children, burns down a church full of innocent townspeople, etc. Did this kind of brutality actually occur during the war, or was it exaggerated in the movie for dramatic effect?

I have ten history an historical biography books that I own in front of me. These books were bought live at bookstores or thrift stores. I can't tell if they're trustworthy. I'll list them, and if you have any ideas, let me know.
Notes:
Some of them are just old. Newer texts may be better. The question is whether they're good enough for personal, not professional, use.
I didn't just boredly grab all my history books to bring to you. I have some ones that are definitely good, like some Pulitzer winners. These are ones that are less clearly good.
Books on Leftist History
The Life of Lenin, Louis Fischer: I got this at a thrift store cheap, so there was no need to question whether it was good. The main issue is that it's old, and may be out of date. A factor, like I mentioned, is that it doesn't have to be perfect or for professionals. I'm just a regular dude.
Stalin: A Political Biography, Isaac Deustcher: Exactly same situation as above.
The CNT in the Spanish Revolution, Jose Peirats: I bought this on a trip to Manhattan in a leftist bookstore. I don't know anything about it, but it seems to be a promotion of the CNT by someone involved with it. That doesn't mean it's badhistory, but if it is, I'll donate it.
Anarcho-syndicalism in the 20th Century: Exactly same situation as above, subbing "CNT" for "anarchism-syndicalism".
Sacco & Vanzetti: The Men, the Murders, and the Judgment of Mankind, Bruce Watson: I bought this at a library bookstore. It'd be cool to read if it weren't actively badhistory.
Che: A Revolutionary Life, Jon Lee Anderson: Ths book is different. I already read it years ago, and loved it. But I don't remember it well. If it's bad, a good critical review would be good.
Latin American History
The History of Latin America: Collision of Cultures, Marshall C. Eakin: I bought this book because it was in the small Latin America section at B&N. I don't remember what any research I might have done on it pulled up.
Cuba: A New History, Richard Gott: I'm tempted not to even add this one. Same story as above, except I do remember pulling go info and being satisfied, but I don't remember why. It's also published by Yale University Press. Something insidious would have to be wrong with the book for me to donate it, but I've seen it happen before, and I will if so.
The Forgotten Man: A New History of the Great Depression, Amity Shlaes: I don't know anything about this book. I got it at the thrift store. The chosen reviews are odd in source.
The Slave Community: Plantation Life in the Antebellum South, John W. Blassingame: Unless the back of the book is making a factual lie, this book sounds important. The only question is whether the scholarship moved away from it significantly.
A lot of the times, I ask for book recommendations, and it takes me years if I ever do read them. This thread will have much more immediate effects. I will donate the badhistory to my local Goodwill if there are any.
Thank you! c:

Communism is an almost inherently anarchistic ideology. I'm curious as to how people like Stalin, or the other USSR styled "communist" governments justified their lack of anarchism or democratic systems.

I see both terms being used in medieval and feudal japanese history. If Knights and Samurai are counterparts to each other, why are knights referred to as vassals and samurai are retainers?

From somewhere in the dusty corners of my mind, I recall reading an article that referenced some fears that Nixon might (drunkenly?) order nuclear weapons launched. I recall this as being set when he was be investigated over Watergate. The really interesting part is that I recall the idea that some steps were taken to either make him unable to make the order or to have the order ignored. But I cannot even remember if this was something known or just something gossiped about, but without any sort of documentation or proof.
So, I've come here to ask you. Was anyone in a position of authority worried about that and were any steps taken to curtail Nixon's power/authority in that regard?

Hi, I've recently become interested in this topic and I was wondering if anyone could recommend any books or even podcasts/documentaries about the period from 1914 (or earlier) to whenever things began to settle (so I guess after the western nations finished dividing the area). Bonus points if you have additional recommendations about the consequences of those divisions. I've also taken a look at the master book list, so A Brief History of the Late Ottoman Empire and Osman's Dream are both on my list.

I've heard that Karl of Austria opposed the move. Is this true? If so, was there any more opposition to this move?

Was there a reason for the mass migrations of germans at the time? Were there actually mass migrations or was Caesar exaggerating the sizes of the groups of Germans?

Obviously there is the partition of India into India and Pakistan (and then the split between Pakistan and Bangladesh). But given that many regions of India had long histories of independence, it's surprising that that process didn't go further. For example, you might suspect further partitioning based on linguistic borders. Why did the princely states all join India or Pakistan rather than being independent? Was maintaining unity a strong part of the independence movement?

I've heard that feminists were the cause for american prohibition in the 1920s. I can find no evidence for this and I'm wondering if it is true in any way.

When I was in 10th grade I took a year of french because it was required. The teacher was known to go off on tangents sometimes and one day she told the class a quick story about how during WW2 when the Nazi's invaded Paris, that there was this large battle that took place between the Paris police force and the Nazi invaders at the police HQ. I did some googling earlier today after randomly remembering this story, but wasn't able to find much information backing this up. Did something like this ever happen during the invasion or was my french teacher mistaken?

Assuming both the heir and spare(s) lived to adulthood, what would happen to the spares when the heir assumed their father's role? Would they get a lesser title? Become a commoner but with money? Did what happened to spares vary if they were male or female?
This is pertaining to spares in Europe and Japan (I do know of branch families, but can't find anything on, let's say, the second sons of Daimyos, etc.).

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but if I went into a catholic church and read a copy of the bible that they had there, would it be the same as if I read the church's bible, but in a protestant or orthodox church? If not, when would the differences have come about? Would it be at the time Luther left the Catholic church or later on?

According to FiveThirtyEight (https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-approval-ratings/), Trump briefly had a daily approval rating above another modern president: Bill Clinton, on days 131-142 of his first term.
What did Clinton do, to that point, to have such a low approval rating?

Arab coalitions have failed to defeat Israel militarily in every war since 1948, with only a few exceptions of success such as Jordan in 1948. Is there a common fault with arab armies or does Israel's army have a superior factor?

I can understand the value in moving infantry from place to place quickly...but once soldiers had dismounted to fight, wouldn't the horses be a liability? Limiting maneuver, requiring handlers and fodder, risk of capture/conversion to cavalry...so what was the advantage of using mounted infantry prior to firearms? Why not just use your mounted infantry as straight cavalry?
