After the end of the Second World War, general George S. Patton said that America defeated the wrong enemy.
I've heard that he wanted America to ally National Socialist Germany in order to destroy the U.S.S.R.
Is this true? If so, what do you think of his opinion?

Unfortunately most of the mainstream history I come across seems to focus on this era in a purely serb-centric or austro-hungarian-centric perspective, and I find the neglect of the muslim position rather more glaring when taking into account that bosnia itself is actually a muslim country.

Is it true that the USA had planned to move the capital and government to Cuba before Castro?

Today:
You know the drill: this is the thread for all your history-related outpourings that are not necessarily questions. Minor questions that you feel don't need or merit their own threads are welcome too. Discovered a great new book, documentary, article or blog? Has your Ph.D. application been successful? Have you made an archaeological discovery in your back yard? Did you find an anecdote about the Doge of Venice telling a joke to Michel Foucault? Tell us all about it.
As usual, moderation in this thread will be relatively non-existent -- jokes, anecdotes and light-hearted banter are welcome.

A quick google search revealed nothing. I am curious if there is a legitimate source this quote can be attributed to, or if it is some clever propaganda.

Considering how common UTI is among women, how was it cured before penicillin? Was it common knowledge to cure it by eating lemons and cranberries?

World War 2 killed so many of Russia's men that women became the majority gender. Why then is Russia still so patriarchal. If women outnumbered men then they could have used this to leverage more rights and protections for themselves.

I've only ever heard that USSR was grossly over matched by Germany in technology and resources, apart from sheer numbers of men. With this in mind, how did Russia roll Germany back? Was it just manpower? Did they make technological advances late in the war? Did their industry have a resurgence?

I've also wondered if this was how USA and USSR would tell each other we're just testing ICBM's, not nuking you. Or just launching Sputnik!
Is that so?
For context as to the terminology I use, NYTimes today quotes Capt. Jeff Davis, “a Pentagon spokesman”, saying, “Russian forces were notified in advance of the strike using the established deconfliction line.” (regarding USA strikes on Syria)

I think the title says it all, really.
I'm a bit of a linguistics geek, so this question has puzzled me for a long time. In most cultures, when myths are transmitted names tend to be transmitted as well. So why are Roman gods named in such distinct ways, so different from their Greek counterparts (e.g. Athena => Minerva, or Poseidon => Neptune)? I would expect Poseidon to be called some Latinized version of his Greek name, like "Posidonus", not something that literally doesn't share a single phoneme with his Greek name, like "Neptune".

I mean the beret, poofy pants with boot, megaphone, mustache, maybe a monocle, director costume. I see it on Halloween and in my mind's eye, but it doesn't seem to conform to anyone that I know.

Title is basically a TLDR for the following:
I am creating a fantasy world for a DnD campaign, and I want the organization of the main populations to be like the feudalism but in a smaller scale than what happened in our world. The land already known to men during feudalism was - forgive me if I am mistaken - huge, almost all of europe, right? But I want aspects of this world to be unknown to men while also having kingdoms big enough that they can wage war against each other, but small enough that they don't have enough influence to discover the rest of the land. Another question: What would be the obstacles that a kingdom would face so that it can't expand quickly to the other parts of the continent?
If you guys have any tips on what I should aim for in my fantasy world, that would be great! Also, here is a sketch of the world map: http://imgur.com/a/oX2Rm
If you made it this far, then thank you very much! And sorry if I made spelling mistakes and etc, english is not my first language haha

From period paintings the impression is a lot of medieval people wear extremely formfitting hoses. Even with modern fabrics and manufacturing, tights are kind hard to pattern, and for the wearer to squeeze into. What was the process of tailoring one back then like? And the common/proper way to put one on?

My question regards on the reason why for instance during the first Punic War Roman fleet managed to loose more than half of their fleet to a storm, for instance the show of force in southren sciliy 255 BC, or even later near cape Pilanurus? Anyway it boggles my mind how in relative proximity of landmass upon a sight of a storm ships aren't beached and such losses can occure? How?

I know he was born in Austria, right on the border, and he was a German war veteran, but was he always campaigning on behalf of a borderless broader Nazi movement, or was he encouraging votes for Nazis in the Reichstag in elections he himself could not vote for? Both?
Would this be like a Canadian fascist running ads or speaking on behalf of an American fascist (for example)?
