Are sources like Mike Duncan's History of Rome podcast useful ways to learn much about a time period/historical culture?

Since podcasters tend not to be professional historians how have you guys found their veracity etc.?

(Music History) How did people tune instruments before electronic tuners? More simply, when did everyone agree that an A had a certain pitch and how did everyone learn that pitch?

Basically, when/what was the earliest standard tuning and how would an instrument maker or musician know they were "in tune"? Did different instrument makers have their own standards? When did they all start aligning?

Is eating green on St. Patrick's Day a 'dark' history, or related to the older 'green' traditions?

Ran across this NPR article claiming that eating green on St. Patrick's Day is 'sad' because of starving Irish during the Great Famine eating grass and dying with green tongues.

This sounds like revisionism to me--is the tradition of green food really based on this grim anecdote, or is it tied to the wider traditions of green relating to St. Patrick?

You know the drill: this is the thread for all your history-related outpourings that are not necessarily questions. Minor questions that you feel don't need or merit their own threads are welcome too. Discovered a great new book, documentary, article or blog? Has your Ph.D. application been successful? Have you made an archaeological discovery in your back yard? Did you find an anecdote about the Doge of Venice telling a joke to Michel Foucault? Tell us all about it.

As usual, moderation in this thread will be relatively non-existent -- jokes, anecdotes and light-hearted banter are welcome.

How sincere was the general populations belief in witchcraft during the European with trials of the late 1600's?

Was the average citizen truly convinced that witches and devils lived amongst them, or was the promotion of these notions by a vocal minority of true believers used as a pretext to settle scores and accusing adversaries of witchcraft out of convenienece - by jumping on the bandwagon and feeding opponents to the mob?

How true is it that King George V was killed prematurely to meet a printing press deadline?

This is from an article in today's Guardian (UK):

There will be bulletins from the palace – not many, but enough. “The Queen is suffering from great physical prostration, accompanied by symptoms which cause much anxiety,” announced Sir James Reid, Queen Victoria’s physician, two days before her death in 1901. “The King’s life is moving peacefully towards its close,” was the final notice issued by George V’s doctor, Lord Dawson, at 9.30pm on the night of 20 January 1936. Not long afterwards, Dawson injected the king with 750mg of morphine and a gram of cocaine – enough to kill him twice over – in order to ease the monarch’s suffering, and to have him expire in time for the printing presses of the Times, which rolled at midnight.

Were there vacations for the average worker in the USSR? If so, how much was given/where did they go?

I know there were resorts of sorts for workers in some socialist/communist states and many people in the cities were afforded dachas, but were there proper vacations given where people would go to the sea or another town for recreation and time off from work? Specifically for the 'average' citizen/worker, not the party elite. If so, what would a average holiday be for the average Russian from a medium-sized city or town? How much time would they get and what percentage of people would get it?

What sort of structure and tactics could be found in a 18th or early 19th century Ottoman army?

Did the Ottomans adopt the precision-drilled line infantry formations employed by the European powers? I know that the Ottomans were famous for their Bashi-Bazouk irregulars (thanks, Captain Haddock!), but how did their regular infantry operate? Did they have special heavy infantry units, similar to western Grenadiers? How was the army organized - regiments, battalions, and the like? Or more ad-hoc?

Obtaining ammo 150 years ago - How easy was it?

I am shamelessly asking this question after seeing it posted on another unrelated forum -- what was it like to obtain brass cased ammo 150 years ago, or say, between 1867 and 1899? What was involved in acquiring a supply for the new cartridge firearms of the time? Did they cost a lot? Was there some opportunity to do reloading at your local General Store or Trading Post (as I have been led to believe, playing Fallout)?

What were the most important natural resources of antiquity? Were they cause for war?

So in our modern world natural resources such as petroleum and rare earths are essential to both civilian and military industry. Wars are fought over them and armies were defeated because of them.

Was this true also for the ancient world? For example did Rome ever conquer a region only for its mineral deposits?

Someone on Reddit said that Europeans have done more for the development of society & science than all other races combined. Is there any merit of truth to that statement?

I don't want to disclose exactly who so everyone doesn't gang up on him. His quote was specifically

TFW a subrace has done more for the development of society & science than all other master races combined.

This was in the comments section of post that was a screenshot of a tumblr thread where a user calls white people a "subrace".

When someone said Asians have done more for science and whatnot, he responded with

Not really. Most of the world follows norms and uses justice systems created in Europe, and are ruled using European ideologies like communism in China. Most technical advancements in the last 2 centuries are "white".

So, what do you guys think, is he being racist or truthful? I was hoping you guys could provide some insight on this subject.

I do know that people of European descent are considered privileged today because of their historical success in colonization and conquering of smaller countries, mainly due to the geographical advantage, being settled up north and all. It's easier to colonize east and west than north and south, or so I've heard.

Thanks!

What kind of test is this, and why might it be conducted? What other large-scale nuclear tests did the US conduct during this era? What was the overall goal of these types of programs?

Did the Soviets conduct any similar tests?

Was "The African Dodger" a real game?

Also called "hit the nigger baby." Was it a real game that was actually played in the early 1900s? I saw it on Facebook and the articles I found relating to it seemed to have all the same info as the one i saw on Facebook. So i can't tell if one of these articles just made the whole thing up and the other articles just copied it or if it was actually a legit thing back then. Thanks!
