In a TED-Ed video circulating on Facebook, they claim that, "Businessmen and intellectuals, wanting to be on the right side of public opinion, endorsed Hitler. They assured themselves, and each other, that his more extreme rhetoric was only for show." Is this claim accurate?

Were there prominent members of the business class and intellectuals that felt Hitler's claims about Jews were just empty rhetoric? Any specific writings or scholarship that can be pointed to that support this claim? I had never heard this before.

Edit: The video in question

Why many religions have particular events and other things in common between them?

Hi guys,

I'm not an expert, but many people says that different religions from different countries tells the same events, even when the texts have been written by different populations and in different periods of time.

I'm really curious to know why.

Thank you!

Quarterstaff combat is all over fantasy games, were quarterstaves ever used in real combat? If so, where, when, and how?

Which flag did the Byzantines use in the 1140's?

I'm trying to find out for a history project, but the only results I can find are either alternate history or belonging the the Palaiologos dynasty, who to my knowledge were the empire's final ruling family.

One often encounters the claim that 'wars are used to distract the population from domestic problems', are there any concrete examples from history where this was the primary motivation for declaring war?

Did Native Americans have any stories/legends about pre-Columbian visitors to the Americas?

I would think that if there were any, they would be regarding the Vikings. But there might be others, Chinese, etc.

What's the Most Reliable Written Account of the Korean War?

Called the "Forgotten War" for a reason, the Korean war seems not to receive much attention in terms of hagiographies, and I'm struggling to find any accounts of the war that aren't noted as unreliable (i.e. written by an ideological communist/capitalist with some stake in the portrayal of the war).

Is there an end-all-be-all military account of the Korean War?

Pre American involvement in World War Two.

My question is was the United States military building up their ground troops, planes, ships etc before we officially declared war on Japan and Germany? And if so how much development was going into a war we were not yet involved in? And finally why did we wait so long to help our European allies rather than enter the war after the Japanese attacked us? Is it true the United States military had guerilla units dropped into Germany pre United States involvement?

How was the competitive chess scene affected by the Cold War?

Given that Soviets traditionally dominated the chess scene during this period, I was wondering if political relations between the Soviet and American spheres of influence ever affected the competitive scene in any way. Things like disputes between Russian and non-Russian players, for example.

In the context of WW2, would the Atlantic theater be considered the same as the European and African theaters?

I am working on an assignment in which I have to identify turning points in the Pacific theater and Atlantic theater. However, I'm wondering if the Atlantic means specifically means naval battles on the Atlantic, or is a more general reference to the battles in Europe and Africa.

How efficient were zeppelins in WW1? Were they more expensive than the damage they caused to the enemy?

Thinking of the construction and the amount of time it took simply to get one in the air, much less reach its target, were zeppelins even effective in the war?

How come medieval artists were unable to produce realistic art that can be produced this day and age?

Why have things changed so much? Were paintings preferred that way? Were techniques vastly different?

Reason I ask is because I saw a man paint a life like painting of a glass cup. Paintings in the medieval ages seem very two-dimensional.

How bad would it have smelled in a medieval city?

I know that London, Paris, and other European cities were unsanitary due to reasons like diseases and poor bathing. But how bad would it have smelled and what would be the reasons? What would the reaction of a 21st century person be if they were to travel back in time and breathe in the stink? How did people live in such nasty air and not take one second to realize how bad it was?

70% - 90% of Native American deaths after 1492 were caused by disease brought over from Europe. At the time, was there anything that Europeans could have done as far as prevention and treatment? Or was this an inevitable effects of the New and old World becoming aware of each other?
