I've read that 90% of the Native American population was wiped out. Is this a pie in the sky guess or do we really know? Did the diseases spread far beyond the colonial barriers? Is it possible to document how far they spread? Did the colonists perceive a decline in said populations? Did this have anything to do with why slavery caught on...because what would have been a native labor force was wiped out?

We're looking into the history of our company and its founder and we've come across his listing in the University of Illinois College Catalog. We know that he graduated with his Bachelor's in Civil Engineering from Iowa State in 1905, which explains the first part of the listing. He also obtained his Civil Engineering license in 1911, but we aren't sure what the designation "do" meant in the following context:

While Berlin was being invaded and in the months leading to Japan's surrender, were the soldiers still being paid wages by their respective countries? According to Tiphaine's deposition at the Nullification trial, Estivet said 'You whore, you have eaten fish in brine and other things which are not suitable for you.'

I'm unclear as to whether Tiphaine is just being an arsehole (he did after all lie about other things in this deposition), or whether Estivet was just calling her a whore, or whether there's something particularly bad about eating fish in brine, possibly connected to supposed deviance in women?

What did other nearby federations or tribes who didn't join one side or the other do? Did they try to take advantage of the war in some way, or flee the area?

I absolutely love history documentaries but I'm having trouble finding quality videos. It seems like all my history teachers share some vault with only them being able to access the valuables. I'm interested in anything and everything really, and documentaries I think are a wonder of modern technology, entertainment, and learning balled into. It's also a great starting point for me to further my learning with subject matters I otherwise wouldn't be exposed to.

I understand the idea that industrial centres were targets to cripple the enemies economy and military targets were obviously targeted to prevent any meaningful counter-attack. But why were so many targets population centres?

Was there a class divide? A regional divide? Or was it something that split people of every kind?

I made the argument that his war may have started when his father shipped out but that's not when the war began. And that if the start of wars were marked by troop movements, particularly around national borders, then Pakistan and India would be in a never ending war. As would the US and Mexico. so what constitutes the beginning of a war?

Furthermore, was the spread of Islam correlated at all to the resentfulness that different populations along the Mediterranean had for the Romans after centuries of imperial rule? How dependent upon the Empire's fall was the acceptance and relatively rapid adoption of Islam across the the lands that would eventually become the Rashidun and the Umayyad Caliphates?

I know the very topic of these questions makes them far too complex to answer with a yes or a no response but I'd love to hear some different opinions regardless if anyone is interested in tackling them.

Why exactly did Nasser nationalize the Canal? I know it was partly related to financing the Aswan dam project, but I'm guessing there was more to it.

I read that Israel attacked Egyptian army camps in the Gaza strip in early 1955. Why did Israel attack Egypt and was this related to the nationalization of the Canal in any way?

I'm surprised that Britain needed to win a war against China to get Hong Kong while the Portuguese had Macao all this time. And I've never heard of a Chinese-Portuguese war. Why was it so easy for Portugal to get a piece of Chinese territory, but not for the Brtiish ?
