I am currently researching the impact of the American entry into the war, exploring all the typical areas such as the importance of the American economic output, and indeed the performance of American troops on the battlefield.

I was just wondering if the good people at r/AskHistorians could suggest to me some historians who have argued that the impact of America, either on the ground with its troops or in general, was relatively unimportant to the outcome of the conflict.

How EXACTLY did an individual, in Britain say, find himself to be mobilized beginning on September 1, 1939? Were active duty military called into the major cities from farther-flung outposts? What about regular joes? Were there enough volunteers, or did recruiters go door to door (figuratively...or maybe even literally? IDK.)? I assume from there they go to training, but how long exactly did it take before enough guys were there to begin? Days, or weeks?
