What happened to the non-US embassies and other westerners who stayed behind after the fall of Saigon?

I watched "The Last Days in Vietnam" doco recently which was fantastic, and showcases how the American military and government got out, but it left me wondering...

  • what happened to the other embassies? Did the UK, French, South Korean, etc embassies just keep on with business as usual or did they evacuate themselves? If they evacuated how did they do it - via helicopter airlifts as well?
  • what happened to American civilians who stayed there? Surely there were some Americans who didn't get on the helicopters in time?
  • what happened to the international news correspondents who stayed to cover the North Vietnamese takeover? Were they interrogated or anything and were they free to stay as long as they liked? How did they eventually get out - overland?
  • Also, what about Americans and westerners who were further south-west of Saigon? Did they just cross the border to Cambodia or something?

Thanks!

Was there any conflicts with Native Americans on the Canadian frontier?

The American Indian Wars are rich with information and sources documenting the various conflicts between Americans and Natives, but I am having difficulty finding primary sources on Native American conflicts in Canada. Specifically with trappers or fur traders coming through certain areas of the country in the mid to late 1800s.

Any information on this is appreciated, and any primary source or story or account would be fantastic.

How did the the Roman Empire make money from its residents?

If I remember correctly, only non-citizens were taxed, but what kind of taxes were there? Were there other ways to make money off of residents, like a business profit tax or something similar? Was there a deficit that had to be filled via some other source?

Historical footage resources?

Hello r/askhistorians I'm hoping someone can list some resources for historical war footage, primarily looking for nuclear warfare footage, religious wars, famine, etc. and preferably high definition. I'm working on a music video with a fairly small budget, and am hoping to find publicly owned (if that's a thing?) footage that is free use, or at least reasonable prices for the footage. Does anyone know of any websites or resources with historical footage archives/resources that I could acquire this type of footage? Google wasn't as helpful as I had hoped. Any helps is greatly appreciated, thank you very much in advance!

What is a text (film/poem/novel/speech etc) that really demonstrates the changed perspective of society during the Cold War?

After the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki the world was undeniably changed in both a political and social sense. As part of a project, I am looking for a piece that can be related or compared to Waiting for Godot; a play that provides a literary insight into Cold War attitudes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is this an accurate quote by Maimonides or is it a deliberate attempt to project the contemporary Arab-Israeli conflict on a different era that preceded arab identity and Zionism ?

From wiki :

The notable Jewish philosopher Moses Maimonides (1135–1204) was forced to flee from Al-Andalus to avoid conversion by the Almohads. In Letter to Yemen, Maimonides wrote:

"Dear brothers, because of our many sins Hashem has cast us among this nation, the Arabs, who are treating us badly. They pass laws designed to cause us distress and make us despised. ... Never has there been a nation that hated, humiliated and loathed us as much as this one "

I find it weird that Maimonides would use the term " arabs " rather than muslims because of few reasons :

  • " arab " identity wasn't clearly defined at that time .
  • Maimonides never lived a single day in his life under arab rule . He was born in Spain during the Almoravid rule ( berber dynasty ) , and was forced to leave because of their successors the Almohades ( another berber dynasty ) . he then settled in Egypt where the kurdish Ayyubid dynasty ruled .

Can anyone shed more light about British society in the 1800s? More specifically, the 'ton'...

I love Regency-era Britain but - ashamed to admit it - most of my information comes from romance novels. Just wondering if society was as strict as they are written about in novels: the importance of reputation, not having pre-marital sex, status, and how the season/ton operated (men approached women for a dance, courted them after, were they always chaperoned? hard to believe no hanky panky occurred). Basically, any information would help. Thank you!!

Are they simply periodizations bootstrapped onto older conceptions of historical eras or is there a working definition of what the general differences between an "antiquity" mindset in Europe and the Middle East and a "medieval" one? What marks the main difference(s) between the two?

Historical Conservative Opposition to the 'Founding Fathers'?

Recently I was involved in a discussion about how the current American Republican candidates for president aren't really conservative. This sparked some thinking about how the group of men who constructed the Constitution were the progressives of their day, which, in turn, prompted the question: who were the conservatives who resisted the federalist impulse? We don't tend to hear about them, if they existed.

I can imagine there were the gents who supported a return to a feudal system (probably a tiny minority supporting this, if any). There were probably a few physiocrats, maybe some supporters of mercantile system. But I'd suppose that the democrats supporting something like direct democracy would be pretty prevalent, but my high school history books didn't tell me about them.

Any thoughts?

How, specifically, did Lord Auckland miscalculate the Afghan people/rulers? What lead up to his murder? What were the British goals and how did they go about trying to change power?

What is the state of "history" regarding Islamic civilization today in academia?

This is a meta question about this subreddit and the academic/historical fields represented by the flaired users who specifically post here.

There seems to be an intense grassroots movement on the internet for a kind of historical revisionism regarding Islamic history and civilization.

While this is not rooted in academia like previous revisionist movements have been), it seems that due to sociopolitical forces, this influence will eventually be knocking on academia's door.

I say that because these viewpoints are now hitting wide majorities among many Western demographics in polls.

Another thing is the rampant "anti-intellectualism" which is spreading, via the internet, across the world in which people basically get to pick and choose narratives they like, each with its own curriculum/syllabus of "works" (since anyone can write a book and get it published). The study of Islamic civilization's history is but one of the things being affected by this.

Do you think these cultural forces will eventually overtake academia? Even if that can't happen externally (tenured professors and all that), if there's a cultural movement to imbibe the next generation of kids with these ideas, these kids will be your successors in the study of history and will bring these ideas into academia. How long do you think Western historical social sciences will hold out against such a thing? The "democratization" of the social science of history? Have you already noticed "movement" from certain universities or departments?

Feel free to address the general issue in any way you prefer if you don't have any particular thoughts on the matter. For example, forget Islam altogether and use any other field that could have been treated similarly in the social sciences.

How Important Was Potosi to Hapsburg Military Finances?

During the time of the Spanish Empire in the Americas, tons of silver were mined from Potosi in Bolivia starting in 1545 AD and brought to the Old World, either directly to Spain or to China by the Spanish Empire. IIRC the Spanish crown took (or tried to take) a 5th of this silver through the quinto real tax.

How important was this silver to financing the Hapsburg armies? Soon after the mind opened, the Spanish crown defaulted on its debts in 1557 and the Austrian and Spanish Hapsburgs split the Empire. Was the output of silver not enough to cover the Spanish debts 10 years after Potosi opened? And how much did this wealth finance the occupation of the Spanish Netherlands, and the wars against the Netherlands?

For instance, I assume a simple SS Soldier out in Northern France would know what's going on with respect to concentration camps, but how far up can one go until it is beyond a reasonable doubt that the individual would have known or would need to be reckless in their ignorance with regards to the concentration camps?

Alternatively, was their a level at which the allies would just not prosecute someone? Where did prosecutorial discretion end and politics begin? (interested because prosecutorial discretion is like SUPER important in my field).
