I have heard multiple perspectives of the story of Hanukkah, but a main belief seems to be that it was a civil war between to sides of jews, not a war between the greeks and the jews.

However, I have not found any information on how the greeks reacted to the civil war, assuming that is what took place.

I have heard that for some of the leaders in various crusades, they were more of an opportunity to gain land in Palestine, or some other profit, rather than a religious war. Is there any truth to this?

I'm currently watching the Spartacus series on Netflix. The names and terms used, like "Tiberius", "Oenomaus", "dominus", and "ludus", struck me because they don't sound like what I know of the modern Italian language (which is admittedly very little).

When did the language spoken in Rome change to what we know Italian to be now, with many words ending with vowels, etc?

I'm specifically asking about the very elite officers of the Wehrmacht. Generals in high positions in the OKW like Jodl, Generals and Field Marshals at Army Group etc positions like Rommel, Manstein, Model or von Rundstedt.

Today we know that The Battle of Stalingrad and the Battle of Kursk were turning points in the east but that was not neccessarily clear for people at that time, was it? So I guess it should be sometimes between Kursk and Bagration/Overlord, but is there actual proof, like for example Generals confronting Hitler for the first time about the senselessness of the fight?

It seems so that the Party elite (Goebbels, Göring, Himmler and Hitler himself) never really acted on that until the very end, so I don't want to count those in.

Humans have been working with metal to make tools and weapons for thousands of years but I can't think of how they could have extracted the metals in the first place.

I've always been a skeptic, and perhaps a bit surprisingly my skepticism with regards to the Kennedy Assassination falls on the side of failing to be convinced by any of the major conspiracy theories surrounding his death. Often times it feels like folks "want" a conspiracy in order to ascribe some meaning to a meaningless (in the sense of it otherwise simply being the random act of a crazy person) event. What are the primary reasons that I should go with the "official story" of Oswald being a lucky, lone nut assassin who killed the President?

Like so many Americans, I can trace my roots back out of this country in under 5 generations, and for 4 of my Great-Grandparents, directly through Ellis Island. A comment in a thread in r/badhistory popped up talking about mass immigration in Europe, and it had me wondering if there was ever a French/British/German/Italian/etc. equivalent to Ellis Island.
