Yet somehow even after being cut up, reorganized sectioned etc. The populace was still able to maintain their language, identity and self. I find that fascinating.

I've read that the Aztecs, Mayans, and all native Americans had never invented the wheel. is this true? Even as a mechanical device, like a pottery wheel?

I know that the US skipped islands during their fight against the Japanese in order to save time, resources, manpower, etc. But did they really just leave every other island they didn't invade alone? What if there was a ton of Japanese on that island that somehow managed to stage some kind of counterattack or sabotage? Or did they just avoid occupation?

I tried searching but apart from a couple posts about Stalingrad's importance in WWII and it being the biggest defeat for Germany I haven't found anything that satisfies my curiosity.

So Stalingrad is obviously one, and I think Pearl Harbour was another? The French thought Marginot Line would be worth holding but (spoiler alert!) the Germans just bypassed it altogether.

Switzerland is also something I understand was an important place because it was the path to and from Italy.

So does being a direct, safe route from one place to another automatically qualify a region as a strategic point of contention in warfare?

Ive read some history accounts that paint Stalin as being totally shocked and emotionally crushed that his "friend" Hitler decided to back stab him. Ive read that he locked himself in the room and would not talk to folks for 3 days.

Was he really that shocked? Wasn't he planning the same move against Hitler or did he truly believe in the dual ownership?

I know that before December 7, 1941 the opinion of the American populace was not to engage in WW2 (I think only ~ 12% supported any engagement). I also know that Churchill was begging Roosevelt for support since by 1941 Britain was barely holding on (Russia eventually took the pressure off).

Roosevelt knew that US had to do something or else Nazism would spread like wild fire, but without support of it's people he could not do anything. So is there any possibility that a blind eye was cast on any Japanese attack?

I have to write an essay "critically analysing the leadership and legacy of Pompey the Great." Any helpful primary and secondary source recommendations would be greatly appreciated as I have to include historiography and don't want to rely completely on articles i've found on the internet that, whilst relevant, are not written by anyone highly regarded amongst historians.
