In the US Civil War, how realistic is the idea that if the south had won a decisive military victory like capturing Washington, Britain and France could have been tempted to intervene on the side of the south, possibly causing a peace settlement?

Did the Romans accept Black people?

As the title says, I am interested to know if the Romans accepted Black people. I ask this because I started watching Spartacus and kept asking myself the question. My friend says they most likely would have accepted Black people but I was hoping that you individuals here could enlighten me.

How valuable were spices like peppercorn in the Middle Ages, and how were they stored?

Hello! I am trying to put something together for the middle ages gift exchange, so any help would be appreciated. I would like to provide my match with more info than "I vaguely remember from tv/internet that.."

I do remember hearing a story about how peppercorns were so valuable that in Alexandria they would be counted out individually with tweezers.

How did the Nazi's - and the victorious Allies - deal with confiscated Jewish housing?

I watched a documentary last night which described how the Jews in liberated concentration camps stayed on in the camps in the weeks after. The narrator said they had no homes to go to.

Were camp inmates offered their old homes to return to? If not, why not?

How were their confiscated homes allocated? Were they given to the homeless or to SS officers who could pull strings or another way entirely?

Has there been controversy regarding the casualties suffered during the Pacific Campaign of WWII, when it was ultimately preparing for an invasion of Japan that never took place?

I've always wondered if the possibility of restraining the massive operations in the Pacific theater in light of the approaching reality of nuclear warfare was ever considered. As I understand, the islands assaulted by the allies were taken to prepare for an invasion of mainland Japan. Why did the allies expend such excessive resources and troops if they were already working with the nuclear option which could be used to bring Japan to its knees?

How did Greece lose 87% of it's Jewish population during the Holocaust?

Also: How should Holocaust historians interpret this statistic with respect to perspective? Is this the right question to ask with respect to a decrease in 83,000 people between 1933 and 1950 in Greece, or are percentages irrelevant compared to Poland, who not only lost 91% of it's Jewish population, but saw a decrease of 2.955 million people in the same timeframe?

In what ways was U.S. popular culture (music, dance, food, theater, film, etc.) directly affected by the nation's late 19th century imperial enterprises?

I'm designing a syllabus for a cultural history course on U.S. empire in the decades surrounding 1898, and I'm hoping for some help with primary sources. I'm looking for examples of "domestic" American culture being formed or influenced by imperial enterprises in the Philippines, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Hawai'i, and/or Haiti.

An example of what I'm looking for would be the popularization of hula and slack-key guitar in the mainland U.S. a few decades after the annexation of Hawai'i. I'd pair that with indigenous-centered readings on annexation and a mainstream Hollywood silent film about hula.

I'd love to hear from Latin Americanists in particular -- does anything like this come to mind for your area? A dance or dish or song that swept the U.S. mainland in the wake of military activity in that place? Thanks!

There has been an article floating around recently that claims Africans discovered America before Columbus. I was wondering if anybody could speak to the validity of some of the claims it makes.

http://atlantablackstar.com/2015/01/23/10-pieces-of-evidence-that-prove-black-people-sailed-to-the-americas-long-before-columbus/

I don't find it to be very trustworthy and found some scholarship disputing some claims, but can't find evidence disputing all the claims it makes, but also find the claims somewhat hard to believe.
