How Powerful was ancient Israel circa 1,000 B.C.E.

I am a high school student who goes to a christian school. Thus, I am required to take a bible course every year and we are studying the history of Israel. My teacher told me that under King David circa 1,000 B.C.E. Israel was the most dominate force in the middle east. I openly questioned him because I thought someone like Egypt, Babylon, or the Hittites of Anatolia were much stronger than Israel. However, he responded by saying Israel could have easily destroyed these nations at that time. If a historian is out there can you settle this disagreement between my teacher and I. Thank You!

Children experiences in WWI?

I'm sorry if this is not the place to post but I was wondering where I can find some information on children's experiences during the war. To my understanding, education suffered, psychologically they were unable at the time to see what the effects would be, and those who would pass as older would join the war.

*edit: Britain and Germany! Sorry for not stating earlier

Which human was Thor based on?

I posted in /r/cosplay a costume I've been working on trying to make a 'Historical' Thor. I've been solely using Wikipedia as a source, which potentially dates the god of Thor back to 2-3rd century. I'm assuming this god was based on a human at some time prior to this, what would this human look like? It seems like needed features are a belt, gauntlets/gloves, a possibly large hammer and red hair and beard.

How much more power did Augustus hold than his predecessor Julius Caesar?

I'm interested in just how unprecedented Augustus' power was. He was able to stay in power for longer than Julius Caesar so I assume he had a more secure grip on power but in what ways was his power greater or different from previous powerful Romans? This thread talks about it a bit but I'd like to know more if possible http://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/v15xi/why_is_augustus_the_first_roman_emperor_not/

Thanks

In the 11th century, why were Flanders, Toulouse, and Vermandois ruled by counts rather than dukes?

They're as large as the major duchies of France and about as powerful. Why was this?

In an 11th-12th century context, was there a major symbolic difference between a count and a duke?

How big a factor was alcohol in battles before the rise of professional armies in Europe?

It’s my understanding that a battle is a pretty scary place to be, and if you’re not careful you might even get hurt. I know modern soldiers take this risk because of intense training, professionalism, good leadership and ideals of helping their nation or ideology. But before this period and after the fall of the Roman empire it seems like soldiers were much more mercenarily motivated and would be happy to pillage and plunder, but less willing to fight an armed and dangerous opponent. Did liquid courage play a large role in making armies actually fight each other? Is there an idea about how drunk armies would get before battles?

If I lived in the USSR during the purges, were there any choices or steps that I could take to guarantee my survival, and to what extent could this not require moral compromises like denouncing innocent neighbors?

For example: imagine if I volunteered myself and my family to work on a farm in a remote area. Might we avoid being denounced if we isolated ourselves in this way?

What kind of underwear did the Huns use, if any?

Oddly specific question, yes, but there seems to be some information available on the history of undergarments in Europe as a whole - yet no source I've come across has mentioned anything about what the eastern nomad people wore under their furs. Any insight on the matter is welcome, thank you in advance.

How accurate is History Channel's "Sons of Liberty"?

I just got done watching the show.

For example: I saw absolutely no mention of the French support and I know they played a much larger role than we are taught in American schools.

I'd like to hear about anything questionable or inaccuracies from those of you that watched the show.

Thanks!

How would it be decided who become a levy in medieval Europe? What about the early modern period?

I've been playing Crusader Kings II a lot lately, and while I understand that a vassal would be responsible for raising a body of men, how was it decided which men would go? I've also got an answer on here about how cavalry units worked in the Napoleonic Wars, mentioning yearly levies. Had the selection process changed by then?

How did West Point react on the day the Civil War started?

There's a scene in Point of Honor where, on the day Fort Sumter is attacked, cadets from the South sit on the right and cadets from the North on the left. Pretty speeches, etc.

How did it actually go down? Were there fistfights, mass resignations, people skulking out, etc.?

World overview by time (e.g by century)?

Hi guys and girls,

I'm thinking this is a long shot, but I'll give it a go nevertheless.

Do any of you know of an information source where I can get an overview of how the world looked during a specific period in time e.g the 9th century. We're talking religions, technology, architecture etc. for different countries, empires or continents.

Any help would be awesome :-)

Thanks in advance!
