With regards to his political policies rather than his moral stance on slavery, was Thomas Jefferson a hypocrite?

Was he a traitor to his party? Or are his obvious breaches of his Jeffersonian and strict constitution ideals the result of the formation of parties and increased sectional differences? Was this compromise necessary?

Any good sources on the impact of the Meiji Restoration?

Apologies if this isn't the right place for this sort of question, but I am doing a project on the significance of the Meiji Restoration on Japan, and I'm looking for sources.

Any sources would be helpful, and if anyone can point me to a book or journal that directly quotes Emperor Meiji that would be ideal as I am unable to find any reliable copy of any of his speeches on the internet.

Historians, can you help me identify this money found in my granddad's WWII warchest?

Click for the Imgur album

My granddad's war chest has a number of interesting items. I'll be posting them at a later time, probably to /r/historyporn. I'm curious as to the provenance and identity of some of these coins, though - any idea as to what they are and whether they are significant? I can post HD versions if you want.

What happened to "regular" German criminals in WWII?

Specifically, the thieves, rapists, murderers, etc of German society. Did the Germans empty their prisons and put them in penal battalions? Were some of the more petty criminals released and put in regular units?

I know there was a battalion of released German criminals that committed some horrific crimes on the Eastern front but I was wondering if they were an outlier or if other units like them existed.

Tim's Vermeer follows an amateur painter trying to reproduce a famous painting. How should we take the result? Is a scientific approach to painting really demystification, or is it 'sum-of-its-parts' reductionism? Is there an identifiable 'X factor' in paintings that resists duplication?

What is the most realistic documentary/drama/film that you've seen which reflects how medieval people actually looked?

I'm not just talking about costume, I'm talking about complexion, teeth, hair.etc

Whenever I watch a medieval drama I'm always a bit put off by how adaptions everyone is perfect. Even the lowliest peasants are well groomed and fresh faced.

I can accept nobility keeping up appearances with perfect hair and attire, or is this another misconception?

Nicholas II of Russia

Hello there /r/askhistorians !

From when I were little I've always somewhat looked up to Nicholas II of Russia, I don't know if this was because of his magnificent beard or that I watched the film Anastasia (1997) a lot during that time, which portrayed him as kind and fatherly.

Now, that's 18 years ago, and I still kinda look at him as a great person, but was he really that? Could you describe if he was considered a good tsar, did he do any good for Russia and how were the Russian Empire under his rule?

Also, if you can provide some insight on him and his familys execution that would be appreciated, was it 'justified' ?

How did Nazi-Germany depict german World War 1 Veterans in terms of using them for their propaganda?

I have read some things about jewish World War 1 Veterans in Nazi-Germany of which most things had been clear to me. Here are the links I found to that topic:

https://history.stackexchange.com/questions/11733/treatment-of-jewish-wwi-veterans

https://www.reddit.com/r/HistoryPorn/comments/2b7g1u/a_disabled_first_world_war_veteran_begging_on_the/cj2o13q (The Reddit Thread to the link above)

https://www.reddit.com/r/PropagandaPosters/comments/10dnqc/12000_jewish_soldiers_died_on_the_field_of_honor/

What I am interested in, is the depiction of german World War 1 veterans. For that matter I could only find two pictures but no text documents at all.

And: https://i.imgur.com/xTtEWhE.jpg (Hitler supposedly shaking the hand of an WW1 veteran sitting in a wheelchair)

I also read that Wilhelm Kreis tried building a huge museum called "Deutsches Weltkriegsmuseum" in 1941.

I appreciate any information about this topic!

Were Martin Luther King, Jr.'s extramarital affairs real?

It's been widely alleged that Martin Luther King Jr. had extensive extramarital sexual affairs. The FBI attempted to use them to discredit him during his lifetime, including supposedly sending him an audio recording of one of his liaisons. However, what evidence do we have for these affairs besides the FBI? Did they really happen, and if so, how extensively? And if so, how did King reconcile them with his pastorate?

I am participating in a Model United Nations conference and have a few questions about the 1971 Islamabad Reconciliation Forum

Hello, let me preface this by thanking you for your time.

I am participating in a Model United Nations conference based on the 1971 Islamabad Reconciliation Forum. I am Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

After doing my research, I am quite confused on the topic. I understand that India separated East and West Pakistan (at the time) and that the Awami League would like to separate from West Pakistan. I don't really understand the big picture of what I will be doing in the conference.

A few questions of mine:

  1. Will I be completely against Sheikh Mujib Rahman and the Awami League? a) Are there any points that I should try to work with him on?
  2. If the Awami league and their followers propose separation (and the consequential formation of Bangladesh), should I be completely against this?
  3. Where in the world does India stand on the issues???

I do not want the answers to what I should debate nor would I like the best points to bring up in the conference. That being said, I am quite confused on the topic and I am concerned that I will not be able to hold my own in the debate. As a first generation American from the Middle East I am embarrassed to not know what I need to but I am quite thankful for redditors!

Thank you so much!
