I know that Napoleon has a bad image of being a tyrant, but did Napoleon really want to have bad relations with the United Kingdom? Or did the United Kingdom force the French's hand in attacking them?

Why are they a big custom in Christianity?
What about the other abrahamic religions, or the other religions from the east?

I learned that the US was able to build a lot of planes, tanks, and other vehicles necessary for war by converting existing factories. Those factories presumably built cars/trucks before the conversion. As a result were there any cars that skipped from say '42 to '46 model years (they weren't made from '43-'45) because they couldn't be produced in those factories?

Assuming that she was, was her influence limited mostly to the upper classes, or would the middle class and peasantry also attempt to imitate her?
Did her influence mostly stay contained to France, or was it international?

I recall there being a thread talking about how the British stereotype of bad food came about from the privations of WWI and WWII--prior to WWI, there was a very rich food culture. However, Reddit has terrible internal search functions, so I'm not able to find it. Could some enterprising British culinary historian point me in the right direction about historical British food?

Thinking about the violence spawned by radical Islam I've been reflecting on the time in history when Christianity was equally violent against those with differing beliefs. What eventually brought an end to the prior Christian religious conflicts?

Just as the title asks. Who is our oldest ally? My assumption would be France. Didn't they help us during the war of independence?
Thank you in advance.

High school history and books I read in the past led me to believe that this was a pretty awful period of time for most people. However, I've seen some historians questioning that perspective and stating that conditions were actually better for certain people — particularly marginalized people such as blacks and women. I know that since government regulation was practically non-existent during this time, some libertarians appear to idealize this time and I'm wondering if there is any validity to this claim, or is it wishful thinking?

Obviously this question really depends on where in the world we're talking about here, but I'm wondering about many cultures.
If we use the Julian calendar as an example, if you were a peasant farmer living in modern day Poland in the 1300's, did you know what year it was? What about other calendar types, in Asia, or the Americas?

I know this is a BROAD question, so I'm limiting it to clothing that we actually have photographs of. I'm also more curious about the clothing of peasants rather than gentry. Did people make clothing that would stand out or add "flair" to it? Or did people generally dress the same within the same social class?

The passage from the book is actually a footnote:
"The word 'buccaneer' originated in a native people's term for smokehouse, which the French pronounced 'boucan'. The original boucaniers didn't board ships and steal treasure; they were the jerky kings of the Western hemisphere."
Just curious if this is also the etymology of the word "bacon", and whether the " jerky" alluded to in the footnote was in any way like the bacon (whether streaky or not) we have now.

And if so, were the changes as lasting and dramatic?
And if not, what historical differences in the sociopolitical contexts of the two religions accounts for the lack of major Islamic reformation?
I understand this question is broad enough for a thousand theses, so feel free to narrow the focus as you'd like.

I came across two World War II posters today at my library job. One said "A careless word... A needless sinking." The other said "Somebody blabbed...". Both had images of sunk ships and drowned sailors, along with warnings to keep your mouth shut about ship movements.
I am assuming that the posters were intended for the general public. My questions are:
Would the average American citizen have any knowledge at all of ship movements during the war?
Is there any evidence that a careless word did indeed lead to the sinking of an American ship during the war?
Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.
