Many poems in the ancient world were intended to be sung aloud to an audience. Lyric poetry.

Did these poets write their own music, too? Did they perform their own poetry, or were they the modern-day equivalent of songwriters having their poetry/music sang by other people? Does any of this music survive (in some form)?

On the Wikipedia page Poland seems to be an island of health while the rest of Europe falls victim. What prevented the plague from spreading there?

As far as I know, Muslim nations were ahead in terms of technology compared to Europe at some point. But if we take a look at recent history, the current Muslim nations are nowhere near Europe when it comes to tech..

So, when and how did this happen?

Or were they simply seen as illegitimate invaders, something akin to Hitler and the Nazis in Vichy France?

I've recently become a bit obsessed with Mesopotamian mythology and was wondering if anyone could point me to a resource about family names or the equivalent from this area at the oldest time that we can say something with any degree certainty, even if it contains some degree of reasonable speculation.

I realize that family names may not have been a "thing" then but I'm sure there would have been some common way to to specify who someone was such as Bob, the daughter Zdpt or something. Still this is something I haven't found much on for, especially for the period before about 600 B.C.E.

I do have access to my university library and online journals but our search tools are not very great, so feel free to point me to some of those.

Hey Reddit Writing a short 3 page extra credit paper about The reason for the collapse of the Byzantine empire during the early stages of Islamic expansion. And Was wondering if you knew Key Facts I should mention.

I just watched episode one of the Pacific and I know it is not historically correct but in one scene they are asked to destroy letters that may have dates or addresses in them. Any reason for this? I did some googling and couldn't find anything out. Not sure what the Japanese could do with the address of a US soldier that's dead.

Not sure if this question belongs here, but most of my readings include this line and I'm not religious so I have no idea why people would want to fear a supposedly benevolent creator - my notions about this are vaguely along the lines of something about fear of a deity will keep you in check, morally and spiritually?

Also in the great temple in Jerusalem, after the animals' were sacrificed and burned, what happened to the remains (ash, etc.)?

Maxwell's equation governing light and all other electromagnetic phenomena would not have been possible without the modification of Ampere's law to include the displacement current. However, I'm a bit curious about the historical origin of the displacement current term. While I know the term is necessary for the continuity equation, in class it was presented as though Maxwell simply added the term for mathematical beauty: it made the form of the equations governing the electric and magnetic fields symmetric. And from there, he was able to derive the electromagnetic wave and all the other phenomena associated with classical electrodynamics.

But physicists are not historians, and I cannot believe that there was no more compelling reason for the addition of the displacement current term. Historians, what was the real reason Maxwell added the displacement current term to Ampere's law? Or am I off-base, and the term really was added simply for symmetry reasons?

In my IB history class today we discussed Hitler's goal of capturing the Sudetenlend for a "unified Germany". We also looked at a map showing that there were pockets of ethnic Germans throughout the countries to the south. What was the plan? Did Hitler plan for these to become landlocked German satellite states? Did he mean to capture the entire region and convert/subdue the other ethnic groups (if so, could they be considered German)? Would those territories gained be part of Hitler's Lebenstraum? After asking my techer, he theorized that Hitler might have performed like Russia, capturing the territory and instilling nationalism rather than ethnic pride.
