I'm aware that much of, if not most, of the classical written works we have have been preserved thanks to the efforts of various monestaries, ERE, and later Islamic scholars, but how many original documents actually survive from the classical period? Are there significant works that have survived in their original form?

I recently read a biography on Napoleon by Alan Schom in which he states that Napoleon never cared about wounded soldiers, only healthy ones. That he refused to build hospitals for vets and wouldn't attempt to improve medical conditions for them. Is this true?

AIDS devastated both western gay communities and entire African countries - the question is why? For homosexuals, I understand that greater tolerance and a growing 'out' community helped it spread, but why was it also so devastating to African regions? It can't have been the first STD to spread throughout the world (I dimly remember syphillis being somewhat similar) What were the conditions that allowed AIDS to be so deadly?

Is it true that English colonists were trying to escape religious oppression from the Anglicans? I'm pretty sure the Spanish were trying to spread Catholicism and convert the natives, but I'm not sure.

Was it just to put the people/terrorists into isolation confinement for so long?
