I was in a conversation with a friend the other day and the subject of copper jewelry came up. He said that it was not used historically- this smelled wrong to me, but I lacked the knowledge to be sure. Looking online I am seeing some central Americans used it and Egyptians... But this seems incomplete.

Anyone able to site other societies and time periods?

Before the advent of tractors and the like, how did settlers clear land? Was it mostly manual labor? Were horses used? Would the settler and his family do the work or was hired labor used? Would a settler clear the whole plot at once, or clear smaller pieces each year and progressively plant them?

Imagine being in the middle of a tight phalanx on a humid day. All you would have smelled is sweaty cock and balls. No one even wore underwear.

Would the Seljuqs have looked "Asian" like modern Mongolian people? If they were descended from Khazars from Ukraine, would they have looked like Russian people?

Because they ruled a lot of the Middle East and Persia, would they be tan "ethnic" white people like modern people in Turkey and Iran?

In Journey to the West, it contains stories about the monkey king. He commits various acts of mischief and chaos. Eventually, they decide to get together and do something about him. They call on the Buddha and ask him for advice. He goes to monkey and makes a bet over who can reach the edge of the universe first. Monkey reaches the edge of the universe, and he finds 5 pillars. He urinates on and writes his name on them. Then the buddha reveals himself and says those 5 pillars were actually his fingers and monkey never left his hand.

Was the urination of monkey perceived as impolite at the time when the story was written? Does writing his name on the pillars have any particular significance in that period?

Hello historians, I have a few questions about living in Rome, in comparison to our life that we lead currently? I'm researching for a short story that I'll be making (cliche I know) about traveling to ancient Rome as a foreigner, aided by a slave who becomes his friend. If anything, I'm quite curious to find the answers to these questions since I've always wanted to know them.

• What era would be the best for having a character appear in? The Roman Empire isn't exactly a quick affair, and some times may have had its ups and downs. What age would be the best to appear in?

• Bathing: The hygiene of the Romans is famous, but I do not know as many details as I would like. Were bathers always naked? What would the slaves do to get clean, and would they help their masters bathe? Or was it segregated? Would slaves even have baths at all?

• How would you get clean? Did they use soap? I've heard that Romans would use oil and a scraper (strigil) to remove oil. Was it effective, and was it used after bathing? What would Romans do for their hair and for shaving? How would getting clean today differ from the Roman times, and what would shock someone who was used to our way of getting clean?

• Latrines: How would the experience differ from modern times and ancient? What about wiping, and of the difference of latrines from the upper, middle, and lower class?

• Dining: What was the dining experience, and how would it differ from today? What would be the etiquette, the food eaten in the (rich, middle class or lower class)? What would surprise a foreigner?

• Names: How were Roman slaves named? I understand the concept of Praenomen, Nomen, and Cognomen, but how would it work if you were a slave? I've often heard that the slave name would be reliant on the master's name. What would happen if a slave switched owners? Can you give me some examples of slave names? What would Romans think of a name like "Jason Isaac Allen" as a full name. What would they think of his first name, since Praenomen are normally taken from only a select few names?

• Clothing and shoes: How would the clothing differ from those of today and ancient times? Of course I know that Romans normally wore tunics, but I don't know all the details. Did they wear a belt, and if so, what was it called? Did they wear underwear, and if so, what what was it called, and how did it differ from today's underwear? If you were informally dressing to go outside, what would you wear if you were a guy? What would you wear if it was cold?

• What, in general, would a Roman have to teach to a culture-shocked visitor to Rome, besides the obvious issues with the language barrier?

That's about it! If you could even answer a few of these questions I'd be very grateful!

Relatively straight-forward question that you'd think would be easily answered by a Google search, however everyone seems to disagree. Different sources claim Eridu, Jericho, Uruk, and Göbekli Tepe. Are there different sources or is it a matter of definition of a "city"?

Or is it all guesses?

I was listening to a Dan Carlin podcast where he summarized one king sending another king a letter that, as I recall, "called him a loser". I know Carlin is not a professional historian, but I was wondering whether colloquialisms like that are strictly avoided in academic contexts or whether there is ever a sense that they can summarize the emotional or cultural gist of something far better than a more neutral word might.

Part of this questions was triggered by movies about ancient Greece/Rome that show warriors with massive bodies (WWE or NFL style) and wondering if humans of that era were able to get that big. Also wondering when humans began working out "for fun" so to speak. Thanks!

I am in a play based on a bank robbery in my home town in 1926, and my character is awoken in the middle of the night and I have to come out in my sleep clothes and I am wanting comedic affect, and historical accuracy so I was wondering is a red union suit is suitable? Or a night shirt and heart boxers?

By Robots I mean a mechanical automaton manufactured to perform labour.

I mean in terms of someone widely being equated with evil.
