I am interested in reading about the rise and fall of ancient Rome but I have very little knowledge of it. As with any subject I assume there are books of varying quality which is why I don't want to just peruse the "Ancient Rome" section at my local chapters. I thought maybe someone could point me in the right direction towards a series of books either by the same author or by a number of authors that would give me a good start on the subject.

I have always love history ever since I was young. However, I would like to learn from historians and academics as to why they chose this field, and why they think it is necessary to learn about the past.

I hope this hasn't been answered, but as I could see the reading list only applies to modern Russian history.

I grew up in Russia and went to school there. I learned the history of the country in what I now see was a very mythologized fashion with lots of messianic claims and presented as a story of good vs evil.

Can someone recommend a book for each period of Russian history that they would feel best covers it? I'm less interested in books covering events from 1921 on because I feel I have a better grasp of them.

In particular the following times interest me: the early Russian state, the fall to the Mongols and the revolt against them, the Time of Troubles, the Napoleonic Era, the reign of Nicholas I with a particular focus on the reformist movements of the time, the terrorism in the late 19th century, and the early 20th century with a focus on the rule of Nicholas II and how it affected the country's fate.

Anything with a focus on political intrigue or the repressive/spying apparatus would be highly appreciated as well.

I remember seeing a book on a desk somewhere. I have the feeling it was about WW2 or something related. It was a thick black book (or part of the cover was black) with bold white lettering. I'm sorry that isn't much to go on.

Wasn't the split started over the Soviet Union's de-Stalinization? Why not seek rapprochement with everyone when carrying out economic reforms?

In the period after the decline of the Roman administration, and before the rise of the early-modern government, how did the European kingdoms manage their affairs? I understand that the King, and his immediate family would necessarily hold some position of power, but who kept track of taxes, tolls, roads, and all those little things that are vital to the function of the kingdom?

I want details, as much as possible.

I apologize if this question isn't exactly history oriented, but I didn't know where else to turn.

I have an assignment of where I need to find the voting record on a particular bill. I've found a copy of the legislation and the entry in the Congressional Globe of when the representative introduced it. However, I can't find whether it passed/failed, and what the votes on it were.

Can anyone point me in the direction of this resource? I've been googling this stuff for a couple hours and I can't find it. :(

For those curious, I'm looking for the votes on bill H.R. 29 introduced by Thaddeus Stevens in 1867. I've found a copy of the legislation in the Library of Congress as well as the introduction and reading of the bill in the Congressional Globe, but no vote records.

This is a question posed to me by a friend. I argue if they were, it would have been a de facto pardon because we won independence. Am I right?

I teach computer science, and this fall I want to have a class that covers some the history of early computers (i.e. 1945 and earlier). There's lots of people and pictures to show, but I am wondering if real historians might have some advice for me about how best to organize and present this information. I don't often present history, so I am wondering if you have any advice, or links to advice, and enthusiastic amateur might learn common dos or don'ts, problems I should be on guard, etc.

I guess you guys would probably face-palm me but as someone who is a european raised without religion, I have always been quite sceptical of whether Jesus actually existed or not. I would not say that he did not exist but I do think it is not something which can be taken for granted.

Back when I used to go on r/atheism this topic seemed to come up a lot and many but not all appeared to believe Jesus may never have existed. From my recollection, apparently there are only 3 or 4 accounts of someone resembling Jesus within a hundred years of his death?

On the flip side any time I have mentioned that I think Jesus existence may be questionable, people generally disagree, most people would say they believed Jesus existed but he wasn't the son of god etc. I also did live with a History undergrad who claims we have the orginal Roman documents ordering his arrest though. I call bullshit on that.

Anyway historians, can you set me straight? What is our evidence for Jesus?
