How was Adolf Hitler able to maintain power in 1944 and 45 even after it was clear that he was going to lose?

Why did the majority of his officers and the army stand by him when he was clearly a lost cause?

What was the German Far Right like before the rise of National Socialism? Was it more like fascism in places like Spain and Italy?

I have heard it discussed that National Socialism was different to fascism in other countries, in that it was radical rather than defending the old power structure. Was it like this before Hitler's rise in Germany? How did Hitler change the Far Right in Germany?

Were the revolutions of 1917 in Russia inevitable, and if so, when did they become inevitable?

Myself and a friend are doing some research on the topic and would love some insight or even just some pointers of where to look on the topic of whether or not the revolutions were inevitable or if there was an alternative/peaceful transition to democracy possible.

Which factors played the most important part in winning battles during the campaigns of the American Revolution?

The purpose of this question is to evaluate what influenced the duration, decisiveness, etc. of battles during the American War for Independence. I am currently in the planning stages of writing a long, thorough research paper, and honestly at this point I am really just trying to get my bearings in terms of sources and basic background knowledge. Any sort of help would be much appreciated!

Things I am considering:

  1. Tactical success, ingenuity of officers and commanders

  2. Supply routes

  3. Naval vs. land supremacy

Thanks in advance!

Was it common for WW2 fighter planes to shoot for wing-mounted bombs?

If possible at all, I seem to suck at googling. And was, say, a B-17's bomb bay as armored as the rest of the plane? Would it be easier to just shoot the plane itself? (not taking escort planes into account)

What about rockets?

What newspapers/magazines/publications are around now that existed 100 years ago during WWI? Do any of them have their archives open?

I want to read the headlines of WWI on a 100 year delay for the centenary. For example on 5he 28th of this month I should be "learning" that the archduke was shot.

How can I best do this? I'd be willing to pay a small fee needed to access old archives?

Why didn't/don't historians refer to the Seven Year War as the first world war?

I've thought about this quite a few times. Why did historians not refer to the Seven Year War/ the French and Indian War as the first world war?

Consider the theaters/belligerents:

What form did the number worship of Pythagoreanism take?

Did they have any rituals and observances? Would it have been similar to what the pop media suggests of groups like the Masons, using sacred geometry and the like? Were there grand ceremonies dedicated to equations? Or was it a more staid, scientific approach with the "philosophy of numbers" considered an afterthought?

I haven't heard much of anything about Native Americans having an interest in seafaring. Did any Native American tribes attempt to navigate the oceans or build ships?

Would a late Republic, high class Roman - like Julius Caesar - speak Greek as his everyday language?

My old latin professor used to say that Caesar's catchprases (Alea iacta est and Et tu, Brute?) were probably spoken in the Greek language. I read Plutarch so I found both of those quotes there (in Greek obviously), but are they the original wording or just a translation?

Seems unlikely that they would let civilians walk around with rifles and shotguns to go hunting. Was all hunting banned, even for commercial purposes?

Are Yahweh and the Abrahamic "God" the same deity?

Were they separate conceptions/religions that were merged at some point?

In the Hebrew Bible, the Abrahamic text appears earlier than the text of 1&2 Kings, where Elijah is a prophet of Yahweh.

Is Yahweh the Abrahamic "God," or did these two conceptions become merged in records?

Why did pale skin go out of fashion to be replaced with the desire for tanned skin? (X-Post from /r/explainlikeimfive)

For many years, pale skin was associated with wealth and beauty (in European cultures, not sure about others) and women in particular went to extreme lengths to make themselves look pale like using white lead-containing makeup. At what point and why was this fashion which lasted centuries changed so we now desire tanned skin?
