The most popular image of a Viking is of a very bearded man, and most images of vikings portray them with heavy beards.
I've read that men without beards were considered womanly and weak if they did not grow a beard, but realy how important were beards to the image of a Viking Age Scandinavian?

I am interested in whether or not businesses did well under a Nazi Regime. Did they do well because of the capitalist system (as past of fascism) allowed them to do whatever they wanted (as part of a free market) or did they suffer because the totalitarian aspect of the state hindering their progress?

I know this has probably been asked before. I want to ask anyway. What are the best reads on Richard Nixon? Also, does anyone have an opinion on Robert Caro's books on LBJ?

I recently had a discussion with someone who follows the Vishnu Tattva sect of Hinduism. Being an Eastern Orthodox Christian, I was struck by the similarities in our theological beliefs and I was curious about whether or not there were any historians here would could map out possible intersects and cultural influences shared between the Vishnu Tattva and St. Thomas Christians of India? Could one have influenced the other?

I've picked up Goodrich's King Arthur to do some research, but I have to admit that my only basis for doing so was a google search for "definitive works on historical King Arthur." It was also published in '89.
Is Goodrich still seen as a laudable source, academically? If not, then who is? Is there anywhere I can go (besides paying to go to a university) to get a barometer reading for what scholars currently consider good material and dominant theories on this sort of thing?
I'm also interested in any supplementary material on sub-Roman Britain, the character of Merlin, and the interaction between Ireland and Britain during the time they are purported to have lived.
Thanks in advance!

'Crucible of War' by Fred Anderson is a great read - but I am curious how these units fought alongside each other? Did the Native Americans get used mainly as scouts? Did Europeans line up directly with their NA allies? Any instances of NA leaders actually taking command?

I know that they were in fierce competition with the Ottomans over control of the Eastern Mediterranean, but I can't seem to find anything concrete about the size, composition, or organization of Venice's war fleet.

She said that there were too many deaths while transporting Muslims to Pakistan and Hindus to India and that India having a huge Muslim population anyway. She told me that unity was possible but required more time and was essentially ruined by political aspirations.
Also, what are your best suggestions for good history books on India?
Thank you

Hello, I'm a Freemason and enjoy reading about the history of my Fraternity, but I think it's easy to get caught in an echo chamber. Since I'm relatively new, I thought it would be a good idea to seek out both publications by Freemasons and by more impartial historians.
Our Grand Lodge has about 70,000 volumes relating to the Fraternity in our main library, so it's likely that I can dredge up nearly anything.
Who would a historian respect as a source on this topic?
PS: Note that I've asked the same question in /r/freemasonry in order to compare and contrast.

This week, ending in April 10th, 2014:
Today's thread is for open discussion of:
History in the academy
Historiographical disputes, debates and rivalries
Implications of historical theory both abstractly and in application
Philosophy of history
And so on
Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion only of matters like those above, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.

I have never really understood the doctrines of fascism, as each of the three fascist leaders (Hitler, Mussolini, and Franco) all seem to have differing views. Hitler was very anti-communist, but Mussolini seemed to bounce around, kind of a socialist turned fascist, but when we examine Hitler, it would seem (at least from his point of view) that the two are polar opposites and incompatible. So what really are (or were) the doctrines of Fascism and are they really on the opposite spectrum of communism/socialism? Or was is that a misconception based off of Hitler's hatred for the left?

Was the non-combatant status of combat medics respected by average soldiers or were medics as often killed as any other enemy?
was the average combat medic generally regarded as being the soldiers best friend, as is sometimes claimed, more negatively or is there no particular pattern?
Hope the questions are clear.
