What did warfare on the Eastern front (ww2) actually look like?

I know the basic details of the war. Nazi Germany pushes in and initially enjoys great success against USSR troops who are crippled by the purges, bad orders, lack of preparation, etc. Eventually the Russians are able to bleed the Germans out some with partisans, hitting supply lines, scorched earth and letting winter do its thing. Then counterattack.

My question is what would the actual fighting have looked like? Would it be primarily lines of massed tanks and infantry ploughing into each other? Or lots of small scale skirmishes and ambushes in and around towns? How big of a role did trenches and fortifications play, or were they mostly irrelevant in the face of tanks, bombs and heavy firepower? How close quarters would the fighting be? Was urban warfare a huge component, or were most battles out in the open? How decisive was air power?

Are there any really solid depictions of fighting on the Eastern front in movies or perhaps documentary form? Thanks in advance.

Do you know of any good resources about Russia between the Middle Ages and the First World War?

I have to work on a country file - we're supposed to include the concepts of feudalism, evolution of state/nation etc in the time period mentioned above. Seeing as I usually focus on contemporary world history, I'm not quite sure where to start looking. I know this is not really a historical question per se, but I do hope someone could point me in the right direction.

The resources can be in German, French or English.

EDIT: I should probably mention that I already consulted the book list, but the literature about Russia listed there seems to be dealing with rather recent events.

People of our day and age can easily distinguish cultures via their decade. If we were living in the 1600s, 1700s, or 1800s, could we do the same?

Looking back at the culture of the past ~80 years, we can distinguish which cultural phenomena resulted from which decade. For example, disco was 70s, hair metal was 80s, grunge was 90s. Looking significantly back in history, are these decade-by-decade transformations in culture still observable?

Is there any record of real-life, high-level professional assassins such as seen in "The Jackal"?

Most that I can find seem to fit the description of terrorists or hitmen. Are there any that are more of the highly-skilled, master of disguise, mercenary, contract killers, or is this an exaggerated fiction?

Does the classification of history into certain "Ages" (Stone, Bronze, Iron, etc.) have any real relevance to historical research?

If not, is it because you consider those terms to be more anthropologically oriented? Do the ages factor into historical work at all? Just curious.

I have a few questions about poop.

Hi Historians - I have a couple questions regarding poop. Most of this comes from me wondering, "If our diet is so much better today, how does our poop stack against someone's from 500 years ago?" So, seriously:

I just want to know. This is a serious inquiry about a topic where people can get a little too squirrelly. Please leave those answers at home. Thanks.

During and after.

I don't know pretty much anything about the reactions during the war, but I read that the United Kingdom was sympathetic after the Treaty of Frankfurt and Germany's excessive celebration.

I was in a psychology class today and my professor made this claim and I was curious as to how factual it was from a historical standpoint.

What did Germans in the 1930s think of traditional German national symbols being replaced by the swastika?

As an American, it's hard to imagine the mentality behind adopting the symbol of a political party as the national symbol. I mean, the idea of the emblem of the GOP or Democratic party being featured on military equipment of the national flag is just preposterous.

Did Germans resent seeing the swastika flag everywhere in the 30s and 40s, essentially replacing older German flags? Did the military resent having to paint swastikas on their hardware?
