During the Vietnam War (American War if you're Vietnamese) how did the Viet Cong go about attacking American helicopters? Specifically, what weapons were most commonly used, and how effective were they? Would the downwash of a helicopter's rotors have a significant effect on incoming projectiles?

Does anyone know of this isolated culture in China that apparently had no war or rape ever?

Someone recently told me they heard of this culture that lived in the mountains in China somewhere that was isolated from the world for a very, very long time. They said that this culture was completely led by women and that in their vocabulary they had no words for "war", "rape", or "father".

They said this culture, which apparently was a city of nearly 30,000 people, escaped war with the Han or the Ming dynasty (I dont recall which she said, I think it was Ming) because they were so isolated in the mountains that the Hans didnt even know they were there.

I took all this with a large grain of salt because this person has a habit of just believing stupid memes they see on facebook. I am not able to find any articles referencing this culture anywhere, despite searching (thought it is hard to craft a good search term for this).

Does anybody know of this culture? Can someone send me a legitimate article on this subject matter? Is this real or is it just somr made up crap someone is trying to spread on social media?

Edit" it seems that it is the Musuo people and that they are a matriarchal society but this painting of it as a feminist utopia is not true at all. They do have rape and murder, thought technically they dint have specific words for murder vs just to kill. Rape is punished by death. Women are also extremely pressured to have babies, women are not seen as "complete" unless they have kids, which is ridiculous. So the propaganda going around about this being the perfect utopia is simply false. Here is a good article about it https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2017/apr/01/the-kingdom-of-women-the-tibetan-tribe-where-a-man-is-never-the-boss

What are some good books about Intermarium?

I just found out about Intermarium and I'm interested in learning more about it. I wondered if there are any good books or resources that could give me a broad outline of this project.

Today:

You know the drill: this is the thread for all your history-related outpourings that are not necessarily questions. Minor questions that you feel don't need or merit their own threads are welcome too. Discovered a great new book, documentary, article or blog? Has your Ph.D. application been successful? Have you made an archaeological discovery in your back yard? Did you find an anecdote about the Doge of Venice telling a joke to Michel Foucault? Tell us all about it.

As usual, moderation in this thread will be relatively non-existent -- jokes, anecdotes and light-hearted banter are welcome.

Any literature you'd recommend on discrimination/"inconsideration" (esp. towards the disabled) in Hungary in the 20th century?

Hi! I am writing an extended essay on music education methods and I'm currently writing on a bit about teaching disabled students. I'm looking at Kodály, and how his method is quite accommodating for the disabled, but making the point that this is likely just by chance. I grew up in Hungary and I know how little consideration disabled students get, they're usually taught in their own schools in a segregated manner - and that's only in the two modern decades I've been alive. Being from there, I know that it used to be even worse, but I don't know where to find any literature that covers this. Any ideas? If there is none, similar literature about Central Europe in general would also be helpful.

Thanks so much in advance!

There is a common trope surrounding the Vietnam War in media (e.g. the X-files episode 'Unrequited') where French and mainly American POW's were left to die by the government. It's been decades since the War, Vietnam seems to be a representative republic now - Is there any truth to this trope?

'Unrequited' shows a group of former special forces who rescued a tortured American Prisoner of War who then goes on a killing spree of officers who certified that all POW's were exchanged.

Are there actual discrepancies between POW's taken and those returned?

Interview with a working historian (Both academic and professional)

Hello everyone! I read the rules and I imagine this post is within the guidelines but if not my apologies. I am an aspiring historian and as such, I am currently undergoing a Masters in world history program at University. At the moment I am being asked to interview a historian. If you are a professor at a University or work as a historian professionally it would mean a lot if you could reach out to me or comment and let me know it is okay to reach out to you for the interview. The interview is eight questions based on your job and three questions about history as a subject. I would normally go out into the world to search for a historian to interview but with the current situation and the fact that I live in a country in which I do not fully understand the language yet it is not an option. If this is something you are interested in helping me with it would be greatly appreciated. I am in an intensive course so all my coursework is condensed, time-wise, so I would need some answers relatively soon so please consider this if you are willing to allow me to interview you. If you might interested but have additional questions please ask away and I'll answer them to the best of my ability. Thank you in advance for reading the post.

Side note: The best way for this interview would be by email so I could email the document with the questions. This would allow for any time or scheduling differences. However, it can be done in other ways when preferred.

how would one go about learning foreign languages during the dark ages?

How during any period really before knowledge was freely around from person to person, before books were common occurrences and many people were illiterate how would one go about learning a different language? in most aspects of life it would be useless to learn a second language if you were a farmer but let’s say youre king of england during the early 10th century and you go to speak to the king of france about a peace negotiations but you don’t speak french, how would a noble go about learning said language? and would they even attempt to do so? would they have translators or the dark age equivalent as such or would there be kings dedicating time to another language from a foreign land?

If Britain and France were so worried about German economic strength in the inter-war period, why weren't the terms of the Treaty of Versailles imposed more strictly?

I saw a quote attributed to Churchill, just after WW1, which said something like "If Germany is allowed to merchandise again in the next 50 years, we will have led this war in vain". This got me thinking, it's clear that Britain/France were worried about competitive German trade after WW1. If Germany was still seen as a massive threat after the first war, why wasn't more done to strictly impose the terms of the Versailles treaty? The obvious answer seems to be that no-one wanted another war, but if Germany was allowed to continue as it pleased, surely war was inevitable in the future anyway?

Weaponry in Dark Age Britain

Hello!

I was looking for any pointers towards different kinds of weapons that theoretically could have been used in pre Anglo-Saxon dark age Britain (early 5th to early 7th century).

Open to all different types of swords, maces / hammers (if they existed), axes, spearheads, or any other useful tips or research. Any siege weapons beyond the standard battering rams / ladders would be fantastic also!

Some examples of what we already have:

  • Ring swords
  • Falx (falchions)
  • Round shields
  • Falchata
  • Scramasaxes
  • Seax (and Long Seax)

We have a fair few more but I don't want to bog down this post.

If anyone can add something we don't currently have or help us out, we'd be happy to provide a small credit in our game as a thank you!

Eleanor Roosevelt's Pearl Harbor address on December 7th states that the President was speaking to the Japanese ambassador when the attack happened. What were they talking about?

I found a youtube link of a radio address Eleanor gave that morning, before the President had spoken to the nation. It includes the following sentence, which I had never heard before:

"in fact, the Japanese ambassador was talking to the President at the very time Japan's airships were bombing our citizens in Hawaii and the Phillipines."

It was my understanding the ambassador later claimed he did not know the attack was happening until after it began. Do we know anything about the substance of this meeting?

I'm curious as to why Macedon decided to do this when Phyrrus had demonstrated that the maniple was a better choice against the Romans?

Other Greek States abandoned the sarissa phalanx aswell.

Why is the North and West side of cities typically the "good" side of town (more affluent, less crime, or fewer minorities) while the East and South are the "bad" side of town?

I should make it clear that I don't support the racialized, classist connotations of the words "good/bad." I'm just using them the way they're used by part of the white upper class, but I personally find the idea of there being a "good" and "bad" side of town repulsive.

Why aren't there really different accents in Anglophone Canada

With the exception of the deep Maritimes, in particular Newfoundland, Anglophone Canadians pretty much sound the same with the exception of those with an immigrant background. As far as I know there aren't really any anglophone Canadian accents.

This is not the case in the US where you have distinct accents(southern variations, New Englander-Northeastern, Midwest). And then you have the UK with many accents in a relatively small area. France has also noticeable differences in France with people from the north, from the Ile de France and from the south sounding different to some extent.

Why doesn't the same exist in anglophone Canada?

History grad programs and “readings”

A question about graduate school and “readings”

Hi guys,

Once everything going on with C19 and whatnot is over, my aim is to go to graduate school—specially to focus on imperial Japan

Ignoring the field specific literature, from what I understand there is a heavy dose of philosophy & theory that you are required to work through. My wife did a year in a PhD program so I recall seeing Derrida, Foucault, etc. lying around the apartment. My question is: in terms of this stuff, what should I start reading? Is there a specific order in which to do so? Etc

Thanks to anyone who can help guide me here. I realize it’s a tall order as far as questions go

I might have been just dreaming or imagining things, but I can swear I saw a documentry many years ago about Japan's largest carrier or battleship during ww2. The story was about how every allied modern aircraft at the time tried to sink this ship but they could not get close.

Finally someone had the idea to use a bi plane and it worked. The plane carried a bomb to the ship and managed to drop it, but the vessel did not sink and never was. They were saying the bi plane managed it because of how slow it flew or something like that.

Is it true? I know japan had a giant ship but cant find anything on it and a bi plane, or was I imagining things.

Do you have great book recommandations about independent (micro-)states that are now part of the USA?

Hello fellow historians, I am a bit interested in the history of the states that used to be independent but are now part of the USA. Micro-states, official or not, are welcolmed too. What I have in mind are the following but if you have more don't hesitate to give me some hints. My list is in order of interest:

*Republic of Texas

*the giant Louisiana Napoleon sold to the US

*Emperor Norton (but you can cross him out, I think there are not a lot of things about him and that everything is easily found)

*Republic (I think there were two of them?) of Vermont

*Deseret

*Conch Republic

*Republic of California

*Kingdom and Republic of Hawaii

What I would like to know about, mainly, is all about the evolution of borders, governemental and legal stuff and the links with other countries. Wars are an important part of these I guess, but I don't necessarily need detailed stuff about the fights. I'm also very interested in art related to these (maybe even more than everything else). I'm more interested in 18th and 19th centuries, but I exclude nothing. Even if I'd prefer books giving a good overview of these topics, as I know about nothing about them, don't hesitate to suggest other options, as long as they're either in English or French.
Thanks!

Suffrage in New Zealand

In the UK (where I live) we learn about the Suffragettes and their various methods of obtaining the vote. Some pursued civil disobedience, some petitioned and some were violent. In New Zealand (where women got the vote 30 years earlier) I can only find reference to petitions. Were there any more radical suffragettes in New Zealand? If so, who?

Israel/Palestine Podcasts

I have known for a long time that I'm woefully uneducated when it comes to Israel and Palestine. With the recent missile slinging I thought now would be a good time to remedy that. I have looked at the sidebar and I see a wealth of threads I can read up on from this subreddit, and I'm not asking for it to be explained here.

What I'm really after is suggestions for podcasts that go over the history of the area and then explains the politics, tensions, and history of fighting. I don't know where I stand on the issue and I'd like good unbiased source to really be able to make up my mind. I'm looking for podcasts (or other audio) because I have more time to listen to things than I do to read.

Thanks in advance.

How did the ancient Greeks view ancient history?

The ancient Greeks have been fascinating for me and so influential to western civilization. I was wondering how the ancient Greeks viewed ancient (to them) history and the people that came before them. Did they study ancient history and, if so, how did it impact their culture and civilization?

Thanks in advance.

Let's educate ourselves on the history of Israel/Palestine

Hi everyone,

This post is somewhat unorganized, I am having a hard time putting my thoughts together. Also, I am not sure that this is the right sub for it.

I want to educate myself on the history of this conflict and I need help in getting objective sources untainted by political interests and such. I'd like to build some kind of timeline based on these sources to put everything together in one place, so that anyone could dive into it to some depth.

I am of jewish ancestry but I am an atheist. I live in Tel-Aviv, Israel.

I was just reading the news and I am shocked, people are organizing in mobs and spread violence, jews chant "death to all arabs" and arabs chant "death to all jews". The concept of hurting a random person, be it a jew or an arab, based on their race is mind boggling to me. I can't understand it.

I never cared for politics and history and so I feel clueless, even though it's all happening under my nose. The internet is full of lies and given a text, I can't differentiate between truth and fiction. Parties with interesets take advantage of social platforms to spread disinformation. The only thing I understand is that I hate racism and I want to spread some common sense and make an impact.

Please help me educate myself on the subject.
