Is the main theme music of "The Last Kingdom" historically accurate to Anglo-Saxon or Viking culture in the late 9th century in England? What was the music actually like?

The Netflix show "The Last Kingdom" tells the story of King Alfred of Wessex fighting the Vikings in the late 9th century. The show is based on the historical fiction book series "The Saxon Stories" by Bernard Cornwell. The main title theme features a female soloist singing a sort of mono-syllabic chant accompanied by various vocal sound effects and drums.

It seems like this "female chanting" theme trend loaded with melismas have become popular since themes like "Now We Are Free" from "Gladiator" and the movie "300". I love the music, I just don't know if there's any historical precedence for it.

  • Is "The Last Kingdom" theme representative of music for Anglo-Saxon or Viking cultures of the late 9th century?

  • What are some historically accurate representations of Anglo-Saxon or Viking music?

What were some of the largest Native American polities north of the Rio Grande before Columbus, besides the Haudenosaunee?

I'm specifically interested in entities with some sort of overarching government structure spanning a large (relative) area (or large population; bonus points for both) and/or multiple peoples, as well as both how that government worked and why it was able to hold together a large polity where others had failed.

I've always heard of the Iroquois Confederacy as the go-to answer for this, so I'm interested in some other possible answers.

(Also, a vaguely related side-question that I didn't think merited its own thread: were Native Americans anywhere pre-Columbus known to use marriage as a political tool to secure alliances or goodwill?)

Should Finland be considered apart of Scandinavia?

Finland has many similarities in culture with it's other nordic neighbors, however it is not considered to be apart of Scandinavia. Finland was under the rule of the Swedish empire for many years and there are parts of Finland that people primarily speak Swedish. Even the northern part is technically located on the Scandinavian peninsula. So why isn't Finland considered to be Scandinavian?

Is there anything to this article's claim on HIV/AIDs being man made and tied to vaccines? And what's the accepted origin of HIV/AIDs anyway?

An article by New Dawn Magazine blames vaccine experiments for AIDs. I find this iffy. So I'm asking around about it's claims.

If no to all of it, then what's the accepted source of HIV/AIDs now?

What are they referring to in this song about the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, "help that never came?"

There's a song by Sabaton called Uprising that is focused around the uprising of the Warsaw Ghetto and there are several lines that I'm confused about what they're referring to.

"1939 and the allies turned away"

"1944 still the allies turn away"

and

"1944 help that never came"

What are these lines referring to?

Why does the United States not have an official ensign for civilian watercraft?

I was watching a sailboat flying the Stars and Stripes the other day, and the thought struck me that if the ship were British, then it wouldn't simply fly the Union Jack, but instead would fly the Red Ensign.

I can understand if the matter of an American ensign simply never came up officially, but if the matter was raised, then were there any concrete designs discussed, and why was it ultimately decided not to adopt an official ensign?

In 1904 Russian warships mistook British fishing trawlers in the North Sea for Japanese torpedo boats, opening fire in what we know as the "Dogger Bank Incident". Was there any reason for Russia to believe Japan might have fleets in the North Sea?

The North Sea is... pretty far from Japan. Considering the lack of fighting in the North Sea in the Russo-Japanese war... was there any reason for Russia to believe such an attack was coming?
